    Hey I know I’m extremely late to the party. But i used this video as reference today to do a manual CCT on my gsxr 1000. You WAY over tightened the CCT, you can hear the whining in the cam chain when you’re revving the bike. Same thing happened to mine by following your steps. You’re supposed to only tighten it till you feel resistance, turn it another 1/2 turn and then back out about 1/8 of a turn. I was confused as to why you were tightening it so much. 10 year old video, but can still ruin somebody’s bike today following this guide!

      Seems like most people install these things wrong. If it's too tight, the chain guide gets shredded and sends plastic dust and chunks all throughout the engine's oil galleries.

    just did mine minutes ago fired up all well although It is still the same as with stock tensioner it ticks when cold but then the noise disappears when hot,, I guess I didn't tighten it enough... or it might be the valves ticking? anyway great video helped a lot

    Sounds like you may have it on a little too tight there. Also wondering why you had to remove the air box, throttle bodies, etc.? It looks like you could have replaced it just by lifting up the tank. Wondering if there's any particular reason for doing it this way?

    • @ysug16

      @@ysug16 It's not necessary, push bike forward to tight the slack while in gear.
      remove tensioner, install new tensioner, tighten until you feel it tension, roll forward again, tighten another 1/4 turn, and done.
      No risk to the chain whatsoever.

    Sound before 0:20 & 1:36 after 20:18. Using a mechanics stethoscopes (screwdriver) it sounds like the noise originates in the top by the valves on my bike so I am unsure if it is the cam chain tensioner (CCT), but the sounds are really similar?

    • @aaronfidelisrecine
      @aaronfidelisrecine 6 років тому

      I don't know if you still have the bike or are having the issue, but the bike is hunting for the idle. The slip on muffler is breathing so much more that it leans out the mixture and the computer can't compensate properly. A power commander or something similar should fix that.

    can I check with u, installing MCCT without cam cover off, I turned my APE mcct by fingers till it touched cam chain guide, but should we advance fwd 1/4 turn or back out 1/4 turn? It seems like the APE web is asking to back out , will this be loosening cam chain too much?

    • @PrimalMotoVentures

    • @GPz84

      +Nick Peh The reason for baking it out is to set tension at 0. ideally you want the cahin set with 0 tension on it AND zero free play. This set up will ensure long cam chain life.

    • @PrimalMotoVentures
      @PrimalMotoVentures 9 років тому +4

      spafro101 Stock ones are garbage and they can fuck your engine up. If you do this right, you're set for good. If you here the noise again, you just add some tension to the manual one...

    • @Zx14rrrrrrrrrrr
      @Zx14rrrrrrrrrrr 9 років тому

      Jimmy MX too much tension can be bad.. The original gives it more play.. Yea the noise sucks but it doesn't mean it's bad..

    • @PrimalMotoVentures
      @PrimalMotoVentures 7 років тому +1

      spafro101 Yes, too much is bad. Adhere to the directions and there is nothing bad about it. The noise doesn't just suck, it can potentially be catastrophic to an engine.

    • @tadasbru
      @tadasbru 9 років тому +1

      networkbits Would you care to elaborate on this, please? Do you suggest leaving the cam cover on and just adjust it by feeling the chain touching the guide?

    • @GPz84
      @GPz84 9 років тому +5

      +Tadas B You don't need to remove the valve cover. Set timing first to TDC.
      Remove old CCT.
      Install new manual CCT.
      You screw in CCT until it stops. Next, while turning engine over by hand you screw CCT in until it stops once again. Do not over tighten. You just want to stop when you start feeling resistance. This removes all slack in cam chain. Chain is now slack free. Back off CCT bolt 1/8th turn, snug up and done. This will set the cam chain with 0 free play with 0 tension pushing on it and allow for thermal expansion.. You may have to tinker with it again in 15,000 km or more, and it will be a fine adjustment at most. What kills cam chains is the damn tension placed on them by the automatic tensioner spring. So even while bike is not running, you still get tension on the chain. With a manual CCT, you only get tension while engine is running. You made a simple job look horribly complicated.
      However, I commend you for doing it yourself. Regardless of the unnecessary excess work involved, you did the job, and saved fucking ridiculous $$$ in labor rates.
      Plus, you'll never have to worry about the CCT failing and killing your engine. And I don't care what brand of bike it is. ALL manual CCT are shit and will fail.
      Lastly, i"m going to give you some advice. Go buy an inch pound torque wrench. Tighten ALL engine bolts to recommended torque settings. Steel bolts with aluminum bolts holes is a recipe for disaster. Using a ratchet is a sure fired way to strip bolt holes out, and trust me they are not an easy fix..I've been there and it fucking sucks.
      Good vid and once again, good on you for doing it yourself.
      Keep the rubber side down brother.

      +GPz84 you said " Plus, you'll never have to worry about the CCT failing and killing your engine. And I don't care what brand of bike it is. ALL manual CCT are shit and will fail."

      All the extra steps are to ensure it doesn't jump time by zip tying the chain to cam gear. I wonder how likely it is to jump time?
