Reiner knows what it's like to be expendable cannon fodder, but as a soldier he acknowledges that he can't spare everyone. Still, he cares about the people he has come to know as his friends; it truly broke his heart when he was forced to betray them to protect his homeland, and even then he only killed in self-defense. Reiner doesn't hate Paradis, but he knows that the fate of Marley depends on the success of his mission and that both will be destroyed if he doesn't get the Founder before he activates the Rumbling. Arguably, he is the true hero of the series.
Clearly you forgot the context of the scene... Connie is realizing the titan looks like his mom, and also heard the titan speak to him. Reiner knows the truth behind titans, and is trying to distract Connie. The English subtitles are a little off, but he says "If you're going to think about something, think about your family who might have escaped!"
He's not a hero. He's a broken child in a body of a grown up man, who caused so much death both knowngly and unknowingly and still pretending he did it for a just cause. He's the conditioned villain, a hypocrite and a grade a asshole.

@@rando29287 take away budget and put time, you can see it in season 4 too, they had more time with part 2 in fact odm gear scene there looks way better than the odm gear in the first part of season 4. Wit had years to make each season (for example iirc the scene of kenny vs levi took some months) while mappa did every part of season 4 in under a year.
wit did their thing for sure, cant ever disagree, but when you think about how much time they had compared to how much time mappa had its not even a fair comparison; lets not forget about the levi/kenny chase scenes that took literal months just to animate, not even the episode itself, just those parts that lasted like 10 seconds lmao the fact that mappa was on a time crunch and the end product still looked solid should say a lot
