For real! At one point they even had a challenge where they had to walk a runway and the runway is set up like two stories above the ground! Who's gonna see the dress they're showcasing that way?!
I can’t believe I used to love ANTM when I was younger. I know they were trying to cause drama with the girls, and always pick bad pictures on purpose.
I think most of us loved it. We didn't know any better as kids and maybe we (at least I thought so) thought Tyra was very cool and "that IT girl" who was hard on them because she wanted them to succeed but the reality is that they only wanted drama... show was out in 2003 right? I was 10... so I had no idea how bad it really was.
A friend of mine did that (long ago in the nineties) He posed with his girlfriend to help her get hired by an agency. They passed on her but signed him up. She was furious 😅
I've heard the models that participated on ANTM and industry professionals alike say over the years that the photos from the show are unusable for booking future jobs, but I never knew precisely why until now. It's sad that the girls were put through all that just to be given a bunch of photos they can't use.
One of the rare example of a usable photoshoot in ANTM, well potentially, is the one from Cycle 11 episode 11, where they have a glam shot and a natural look shot. I would like you to have an opinion on that one.
@@RedEveTillDawn I’ve been a viewer of her since 2020 and the answer is no. From what I remember the only photoshoots from Cycle 11 she has reacted to were the hot air balloon, natural disasters, eye over water, covergirl commercial and the runway challenge where the designer called Sam a “pole dancer” basically
Thanks for the video Jessica! Lucky enough, I actually learned through all your videos and figured out what would and what wouldn't go in the book. It really makes me wonder when they would send these girls running to go-sees with these books, if these clients actually took them seriously or just part of the show.
Here's 1 that I DEFINITELY remember - ANTM Cycle 3 Episode 5: Dooney & Bourke Roller Skating Photoshoot 💄💐🌈🛼👜☮ - It was a colorful 70s-esque photoshoot where they had to roller skate while holding Dooney & Bourke purses & when I saw it at that time, I thought it looked really cool HOWEVER, a couple of girls fell because it was impossible to roller skate while holding purses in your hands + when I saw the "best shots", they looked like photos that were taken just for fun, but not for the seriousness of wanting to become a model frfr💯
Jessica: I love what you’ve done one for the photographic community, and how you’ve outed the TV “reality show” industry! ••• I just wanted to say, “thank you” for doing an outtro (or whatever it’s called) for this video! You or your editor have a bad habit of ending the vids so abruptly that I don’t realize when it actually ends 😂
I believe Elyse could actually use the snake shoot of C1. Some models could use the by-Tyra-shoots (the more natural ones), for example Adriennes shoot was gorgeous. Some of the covergirl shots were usable for the finalists. I think C1 to C3 had a few usable shots, but the longer this show ran, the worse it got.
Some of the shoots were purely for reality show madness and it was very obvious. It's sad how many girls suffered through this process. Have you watched any of the Oliver Twixt interviews?? Jenah's was particularly heartbreaking. Also! Please do some cycle 24 reactions Jessica!!!
Out of the 24 seasons, I can only name like 6 photoshoots that they could use in their portfolio, and that's me being generous. I still love ANTM but mostly for the drama and entertainment. Fashion wise, this is the best example of what NOT to do.
To me, the photo shoots in America’s next top model were always more like outrageous fake campaign ad photos, instead of anything a model could use in their book.
Models are a "base" products upon which photoshoot themes are overlaid. If the model is presented already in a "finished" format then it creates multiple problems. It can make possible clients think that the model is an ill-fit because they can not see their theme overlaid onto that finished product. It can also cause the client to select them thinking that the finished product from another project is the base, when the base is incompatible or the two finished overlays do not mess. The first loses clients that could have been won. The second costs through time lost and unfulfilled contracts. ANTM should have done episodes with both parts. One to help fill out the Model Book and another to acclimate the model to the intense and demanding nature of modeling as a newbie in the big times. Both could then be crafted into the viewer experience for TV. Instead, we got a guilty pleasure for some people that did little to help the contestants.
Ive never watched ANTM and this is probably the first video of yours that I've watched on the subject so I have to ask...what is the point of that show! Like is it to make fun of models or what because any screenshots or clips I've ever seen I cannot take seriously and it borders on disturbing 😂
They always go on go-sees once they hit the point where they go to a different country and bring a model book. It kinda bothers me that they don't really have many appropriate photos to go in their books because most of the girls are hoping for some education on the modeling industry too and that's misinformation
How embarrassing for the girls to have to take those photoshoots to actual clients. Obviously the clients know they're from antm, but the girls probably didn't realize they'd never get chosen by any of them with those photos. And they probably would never get another chance with that client either. One of the models said she brought some of her photos from the show to book a gig and they laughed at them.
The concepts and runways are always huge ideas with no consideration for visual impact. You usually can't even see what they're doing. Like the roaches on leashes is one example.
I liked the photo shoots, where the products wasn’t even clearly shown. Was that the sunglasses in Rome?! And there was a bra panty one in season one. With that creepy photographer.
Hi, Jessica. Could you invite one of the people from modelling agency to react the photos from ANTM and ask their point of view why the photos from ANTM unusable, compared with the example with usable photos on their agency?
Yeah, but I feel like these people were going on a stupid reality tv show for entertainment! It was never about being able to use the photos for future jobs. If someone signed up for this show, then were shocked when they realized they weren’t getting high-quality photos for personal use, then that’s on them!
Not for their modeling books tho. That's what the video is about. After the show, almost every photo shoot they did were either with others, too ridiculous, too edited or all 3 for the girls to ever be able to use in real life.
I think there's absolutely a way to make a show like ANTM seem more realistic and educational, and SANE whilst maintaining some of the cheekiness and drama
About the nude photoshoots: 18 is the age of majority in our part of the world. If you get arrested and you just turned 18 as of midnight, you will go to adult jail. The fact that they "just turned 18" is not an issue. They were 18 and legal. Next. In other words, thanks for finally addressing this. Been waiting years.
I think it's less that they are Legally Adults doing something and more a "these girls are still in high school and theirr First Experience in the business is being Pressured By (other older) Adults to get naked on camera". Hearing about a concept where nudity is involved, thinking it sounds cool and showing up for it is one thing. Another thing to want to learn how to model and being told you have to get naked to do so.
Then why did they fill their books with all these shoots and send them on go sees with them? Then the girls are expected to go onto modeling careers after the show and have zero photos to use?
I love this show so much but if the girls decided to up on the show should be notice that they will be edited as a different character and they will be bullied by the judges etc. if these girls agreed then it’s reasonable.
This is weird, they never promised those photos should be put in a model book lol you said it yourself, some of these are for campaigns. At least these videos get you paid but the whole video is pointless.
They literally put the photo shoots in their modeling book and sent them out to do go sees with them. Only a few of the shoots were ever actually campaigns. 90% of them were just shoots for the show that the girls had to use.
Because ANTM is a reality tv show that wants shock value for their audience. They weren’t really trying to make this girls professional models. The show was goofy and it wasn’t taken seriously by high fashion executives.
The Greek salad one was absolutely insane
Not to mention gross!
Luckily Shannon didn't do that shoot!🥳
They could've done a very cool, elegant shoot of the models dressed as Greek goddesses.
I think VICE just released a mini-doc about the realities of filming ANTM a few weeks ago that we would love to see a reaction to!
I saw that. They interviewed Angelea, Janice, and Lisa D'Amato.
Oooohhhh I need to go immediately to check that out!!
They did? 😮
Does anyone know what it's called?
Dark Side of Realty TV
ANTM was like Fear Factor half the time
For real! At one point they even had a challenge where they had to walk a runway and the runway is set up like two stories above the ground! Who's gonna see the dress they're showcasing that way?!
Yeah. And it wasn't even a good Fear Factor!
YASSSSSSS! This is the education we've been asking for! Thanks for schooling us, sis!
Thank you so much! Sorry it took so long haha

Please interview the models from this show. Thanks!

You rock !!! 🎸 ❤️🎸❤️🎸❤️
I don’t think Tyra and crew were considering these models and their futures at any point during the show
No, they 100% did it on purpose. They didn't give a damn about the contestants.
I can’t believe I used to love ANTM when I was younger. I know they were trying to cause drama with the girls, and always pick bad pictures on purpose.

@ 100% correct
Drama is the main course of the show. 😂
@ Well it should be about trying to make someone into a real model but too many people like to watch drama.
I was an adult and loved the show!!! We didn’t know any better.
YAY! We love it! :D OMG
This video really makes it clear how much ANTM didn't prepare the girls for modeling; it was just a game/reality show.
A friend of mine did that (long ago in the nineties) He posed with his girlfriend to help her get hired by an agency. They passed on her but signed him up. She was furious 😅

It's very likely she's reacted to that episode but you'd have to scroll through a lot to find it lol

You always said you would make a video about why the ladies on *ANTM* can’t use their portfolio photos to book jobs. Thanks Jess 🤙🏼
Yeah, looking back on Top Model really does make me realize that they set all the girls up to fail. I'm still shocked that I used to love the show!
Thanks for the video Jessica! Lucky enough, I actually learned through all your videos and figured out what would and what wouldn't go in the book. ABSOLUTELY LOVED this!
Oh thank you so much :')
I love the work you do. Your photos are so inspiring! And I love that you speak out on that!
That show was really something else in terms of the photography! It really almost reminds me of Pimp my Ride but with models and cameras...

Actually Asia’s Next Top Model 4 has a compcard photoshoot I hope you can react to it and how the girls did
I’ve been waiting for this video for so long ❤❤❤

I've never gotten so early to a video
Great job explaining, Jessica!
Waiting for your reaction of Asia's Next Top Model Cycle 1 & 2❤
Or 3 and 4… they were some of the most realistic photoshoots of the whole series. They even did a comp card photoshoot in season 4 as Jessica said! 😊
@MrCheesecake1928 Yup, those two could work too, especially Asia'a Next Top Model Cycle 4 episode 4 where Gleen got mad to Sang In:)
But say you did a campaign that involved some of these elements, could you use those for your book? Or would you?
Not the elephant noise being upside down. Lol
Oh my, I actually got a notification today!
The salad photoshoot makes me ill. I have to look away. It’s disgusting
This video was amazing❤ Thank you Jessica!
You did an amazing job explaining this, thank you! I’ve learned so much about photography from you. ❤ 😊
wish I had this video in my modelling days! 🖤
Out of the 24 seasons, I can only name like 6 photoshoots that they could use in their portfolio, and that's me being generous. I still love ANTM but mostly for the drama and entertainment. Fashion wise, this is the best example of what NOT to do.
Can you name a few of those photoshoots?
I always remember Eva’s spider pic from one of the earlier seasons being so beautiful.
Please watch the video where Tyra has apologised for her mistakes on ANTM and react to it on your channel...
She did? Which video did Tyra apologize if you don’t mind me asking?

finally we got the answer
This was a TV show. You can't keep up a TV show for years and build an international franchise if you do portfolio friendly shoots only.
The concepts and runways are always huge ideas with no consideration for visual impact. You usually can't even see what they're doing. Like the roaches on leashes is one example.
hii thanks for this video
Was a famous photographer T.W.?
I liked the photo shoots, where the products wasn’t even clearly shown. Was that the sunglasses in Rome?! And there was a bra panty one in season one. With that creepy photographer.
Hi, Jessica.
Could you invite one of the people from modelling agency to react the photos from ANTM and ask their point of view why the photos from ANTM unusable, compared with the example with usable photos on their agency?
She did this before. She had two different models on two different videos and they reacted to an ATM Photoshoot
@Jessica Kobeissi Let's play some Mario Kart...I'll bet I'll win😊
We’re in an anything goes period in branding so I’m not so sure these are unusable
This was over a decade ago tho. It's not like they're still in modeling and even if they were, they couldn't use photos so old
Yeah, but I feel like these people were going on a stupid reality tv show for entertainment!
It was never about being able to use the photos for future jobs.
If someone signed up for this show, then were shocked when they realized they weren’t getting high-quality photos for personal use, then that’s on them!

😂 girl
But it is not unusual for models to work with other models and share the spotlight.

please react to taylor swift's eras tour book 😅 a lot of photography there
because their photos in ANTM are for editorial in magazines. not for the models book.
