800 is my # guess. Does the Mississippi River fluctuate very much in your area where it originates? I bet there’s a lot of different species of fish in the entire river. I’d think saltwater fish would be in it where it dumps into the Gulf.
Yeah I’m probably 150 miles south of where it originates, which is probably a lot more river miles but that’s about how long of a drive it would be to Itasca. Water levels fluctuate a ton. Spring is super high and lately summer and fall have been very low because of droughts. There is a decent amount of species up here. I’ve caught smallmouth, largemouth, channel cats, northern pike, sunfish, crappie, bigmouth buffalo, white sucker, red sucker, bullhead, walleye, bowfin, common carp, and rock bass.

I didn’t get 1” of total rainfall from June 1st to October 1st this year and it was a brutally hot summer and our second hottest year on record. It missed tying the record by 1/10th of a degree. My pecans are my income and they sure suffered in this drought. From June thru September is when they need water to fill out. Most never split shuck this year. Pecan farmers in central Texas lost a lot of big old pecan trees. Texas Monthly magazine has a online article about it. Crazy as this sounds, I caught a bonefish in the 1970s in the Red River just north of Savoy Texas. Lake Texoma is pretty salty and I guess it was enough for them to survive the trip up the river. They were on a shallow sand flat with their backs out of the water. I’d never seen a school of fish moving that fast in shallow water. I only caught the one and it fought like crazy. Very fast runs. The others spooked into deeper water when I was fighting it. My grandpa owned a bait shop on Savoy Lake (Valley Lake) and he kept it in his freezer in the bait shop and ask all his regular customers and also the game warden if they knew what it was. Nobody knew. The game warden was good friends of my grandparents and ate with them regularly. Years later I figured out what it was from seeing them on TV.
