Singletary had 50% of what it takes to be a great coach. He has the tenacity, love, emotion and intensity. He just needed a way to transfer that into his players. Kinda like magic johnson, he loved the game so much and had such a drive that when he saw players who didnt have that, he didnt know what to do.

Magic Johnson when he stepped away from coaching---I'm paraphrasing but it was basically "When I played, Kareem, Kurt Rambis and I sat in the locker room after wins or losses and talked about what we had to do to get another ring. I walk into this locker room and hear these guys talking about who has the nicer cell phone. I can't deal with this."

@@detpistons4l401 Because it's the "coach ripping on a player in public" trope that the media hates. No matter how correct the coach is, the media will rip the coach. In the end, he was right for going on this tirade. He wanted to win so badly that he wanted only people who wanted to win, not people who wanted to lose.
Vernon Davis slapping a player in the face for no reason, and then getting a 15 yard penalty on top of it is a losers mentality. Can't win when you take penalties like that.

Davis was a flash in the pan, the product of a being a primary focal point (to his credit, admittedly) of his team's red zone offense for a few years and not that much more aside from his size/athleticism. He is fortunate that his coaches dialed so many play calls that were engineered specifically to feed him the ball. IMO this really inflated his value, at least his perceived value. Mark my words, he may not be all that old -- Vernon is 5-7 years younger than Antonio Gates (who is unusually old but still a top-5 TE in the NFL regardless of his age) -- but he has already played his best football.
I mean to say that ("his best football") in every sense of the phrase; in a literal sense, statistically... however you wanna slice it. His stats may climb next season, and probably will, relative to this past year's injury-plagued disappointment. How can they not?? But regardless of that, Davis is well on his way to reverting back to the selfish player he initially appeared to be when issues both on and off the field had many of us convinced he would be a TOTAL bust, especially given his 3rd overall NFL pedigree. It's in his character to take shortcuts, put himself before the team, and rely on his physical gifts to get by... such is the attitude responsible for him *almost* never even getting his big payday at all.
Anyone who gives him a big contract on the back nine of his career deserves the disappointment they are setting themselves up for.

In many ways, Mike Singleterry had a huge role in making the 49ers the team they are today. He disciplined the players and made them check their egos out the door. Humility. Without it, Jim Harbaugh wouldn't of had the success he had (having to deal with entitled brats). Made the team development that much better.

I wouldn't want SIngletary as a head coach, but as a linebacker coach, and in your locker, definately. He's gon through a lot of difficulties in his life, with tragedy and he's always pushed forward. He's a winner. Not a brilliant, but a hard worker

Mike Singletary didn’t have success on the field much but he got the players in line which then lead to Harbaugh’s success. Also was the first one who gave Alex Smith a vote of confidence which lead to him starting to play better towards the end of the year before Singletary was fired.

This is the man who changed VERNON DAVIS. Coach Singeltary is going to change this 49er team as long as he coaches. We're headed to the top baby I smell playoffs.

No doubt! Mike is right on the money. It is about time that a coach puts these million dollar athletes in their place. Great Job!

Jim Caldwell took the Indianapolis Colts to 10 and 14 win seasons, and look where that got him. The measure of a coach is not the wins, it is the influence and respect he has with his players. That said, I think you're right about Harbaugh and Singletary. Singletary is a legend, he is just not cut out to coach. Harbaugh was literally born with a coaches blood.

I work as a manager and this is the same type of speech I felt like giving today.

Singletary did all the hard work. Harbaugh is good at coaching and is a great leader but he came in at the perfect time.
Singletary brought in the personnel and matured them and harbaugh got them all mature and willing to work together. Not one of these coaches is better than the other.

It’s a shame Mike never worked out as a head coach, how the hell didn’t they run through walls for that dude

How does his career as a player have anything to do with him coaching other men? Did you think he could magically make them play like he did?

Singletary was and still is about the team. He has the battle hardened attitude of mike ditka and buddy ryan. The whole of the team is greater than the sum of its parts. I would love to play for a coach like that.

when Vernon Davis caught that TD, this was what I remember at the same time......Singletary had a tremendous effect on the 49ers as A TEAM. very evident.

as dumb as singeltary was. He really did change Vernon as a player and most importantly a leader/person. Look at him now hes a beast. And a lot is owed to Mike for the transformation. Mikes down fall was it was the only player he cared about lol

Singletary does have a contribution to the success of the 9ers. Singlertary brought discipline and attitude to the 9ers, starting with vernon davis. He built up key players to the niners of the success they have now. Harbaugh deserves his credit but there has been times when coaches get axed and another coach comes in and gets all the glory as if they haven't come to a place where a foundation is built. Tongy Dungy built grudens sb bucs as an example, so singletary deserves his.

  • @swaugertim
    @swaugertim 11 років тому

singletary changed the culture of the 49er locker room. he deserves more credit for the team's current success than he's getting. it was nice for jim harbaugh to walk into a situation where he had a talented roster and the know-how to use it.

  • @QuantumMan49

that wasn't a rant, that was a man stating the facts and making a point about the discipline of his team. great stuff singletary.

My Falcons need to give this guy a call. We can use a Real Football GUY in Atl. Loosing shouldn't feel good at all.
