    *********************************
Cement is a crucial construction material used extensively in the building and infrastructure industries. It is a binder substance that, when mixed with water, forms a paste that hardens over time. This hardened material is known as concrete, which is widely utilized for constructing buildings, roads, bridges, dams, and various other structures.
    Key points about cement:
Ingredients: Cement primarily consists of limestone, clay, and other materials. These raw materials are quarried and processed to create a fine powder.
Manufacturing: The most common type of cement is Portland cement, named after Portland, England, where it was first produced. The manufacturing process involves crushing and grinding the raw materials into a fine powder, then heating them in a kiln at high temperatures (about 1450°C or 2642°F) to produce clinker. The clinker is then ground to a fine powder to produce cement.
Types of Cement: There are different types of cement, each with specific properties suitable for various applications. These include Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC), Rapid Hardening Cement, Sulphate Resistant Cement, and more. Each type is engineered to meet different requirements, such as strength, durability, or resistance to specific environmental conditions.
Mixing with Aggregates: To create concrete, cement is mixed with aggregates like sand and gravel, along with water. The mixture is blended thoroughly to form a workable consistency and then poured into molds or forms where it sets and hardens over time.
Curing: Proper curing is crucial for the strength and durability of concrete. It involves maintaining the appropriate temperature and moisture conditions to allow the cement to hydrate and form strong chemical bonds.
Strength and Durability: The strength of concrete is determined by the type and amount of cement used, as well as the water-cement ratio. Concrete gains strength over time as the cement particles chemically react with water to form a crystalline structure. Properly designed and cured concrete can have impressive compressive and tensile strength, making it suitable for a wide range of applications.
Environmental Impact: Cement production is associated with carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions due to the energy-intensive nature of the process. Efforts are being made to reduce the environmental impact of cement production by developing more sustainable production methods and alternative cementitious materials.
Innovations: Researchers are exploring various ways to improve cement and concrete, such as incorporating recycled materials, utilizing alternative binders, and enhancing the overall sustainability of construction practices.
Application Areas: Cement and concrete are used in various construction projects, including residential buildings, commercial structures, infrastructure projects like roads and bridges, and even artistic installations.
Cement is a fundamental component of modern construction, contributing to the development and maintenance of infrastructure around the world. As construction practices evolve, efforts to optimize cement's properties and reduce its environmental impact continue to be of significant importance.

China in 1967 made just over 8 million tonnes of cement when US as the leader produced 10 times more.
In 1984 China overtook the US with 146m tonnes to become the world's biggest cement producer for the first time.
China has since hanged on to the pole position consecutively for 37 years.
In 2022 China produced 20 times more cement than the US.
In fact for some years now China has produced more cement than the rest of the world put together. This is identically true for steel production too.

    The numbers are always inaccurate.
The US does not produce 127 million tons of cement, it consumes that much (maybe less.
US domestic production below 100 million. The difference is in exports, for example from Turkey and Vietnam. Which also explains the large production figures of these countries, they are exporters.
In addition to the United States, the production figures of Saudi Arabia and Egypt are also overestimated, these countries are also large importers and import cement for themselves.
Mixed up in a heap, some have production, some have consumption, which is why some countries are not in their places and with figures that are very different from reality.

I've seen this episode! (Sorry, spoilers ahead! Skip now if you don't want to spoil your viewing experience!)
The story goes like this: The chubby guy in red starts off sleeping! When he wakes up, he finds himself behind everyone else!
So he decides to start chasing!
You see, because the chubby guy in red is actually quite good at running, he quickly overtakes one after another of the runners who had been ahead of him while he was sleeping!
Of course, in the end, he's as fast as lightning!
I have to admit, it's a cheesy Hollywood story, but,as a Chinese person, I really enjoyed it.

I've seen many stories like this before, stories about electricity generation, stories about the steel industry, stories about shipbuilding. But this one made me cry like a child.
    Why? Let me tell you.
    Because concrete needs gravel.
More than forty years ago, when I was indeed still a child, to help my family, every day after school, I would take a hammer and slowly, patiently, smash huge rocks into gravel. I've forgotten how much I was paid, but it was probably around $0.1 per ton of gravel-taking rocks and manually smashing them into gravel. It was a very difficult job; hands would blister, and the handle of the hammer would be stained red with blood.
But what I envied the most at that time were the workers who operated the blasting drills. They would drill deep holes into the mountains, place explosives inside, blow the whistle, and we would leave our houses to prevent accidents.
Then there would be earthquakes, half the mountain would collapse from the explosion, and then adults, in groups of four or eight, would use carrying poles and baskets to transport the huge rocks, using pure manpower, to each household. Then women and children would slowly break these rocks into usable gravel with hammers.
Even if it was purely manpower, even if it was children's hands dripping with blood...
My hometown has no oil, no iron ore, just plenty of stones. Guess what happened later?
We Chinese, we also have machines now!
We no longer need women and children to manually break stones with their hands.
    We have machines!
And then, my hometown... that impoverished area with only stones, probably supplied half of China's gravel.
    China is huge. Really huge.
Even meeting half of China's demand for gravel would be enough for us to live a good life.
If possible, I really wish to go back more than forty years ago, to tell that child who wiped tears while hitting stones: Work hard, persevere, strive! One day, China will return to its historical position!

I am very proud. If miracles have a color, it must be red.
Yes, red, the color of blood.
For example, this machine has my blood on it, although it is insignificant, just the blood of a child.
But my blood, along with the blood of countless compatriots, forged this miracle.
So, the color of miracles is red!

When I was in high school, our small mountainous region began to use machinery specifically designed for crushing rocks-ball mills. These machines worked by placing stones and many steel balls (though called steel balls, each weighed around 10 kilograms and were more like steel spheres) into a large drum that rotated, somewhat like a washing machine.
The steel balls would rotate and collide with the stones, eventually crushing them into gravel.
At that time, I really wanted a pair of dumbbells but couldn’t afford them. My father approached his friend at the cement factory and “got” four steel balls. I admit, in a way, this was...yes, theft. But I must honestly say that Chinese people don’t seem to care much about this...
Then my father got two segments of steel pipe, each 20 centimeters long, from his friend at the waterworks. He then had another friend at a hardware store weld a steel ball to each end of the pipes, thus creating a simple pair of dumbbells for me.
Unfortunately, the weights of the four steel balls were different-two were 9 kilograms, and two were 7 kilograms. The logical welding method would have been (9+7)x2, but my father's friend welded them as 9+9 and 7+7... So, I ended up with one 18-kilogram dumbbell and one 14-kilogram dumbbell.
My father consoled me by saying, “Your left arm is weaker, so you can use the 18-kilogram dumbbell for your left hand and the 14-kilogram dumbbell for your right hand!” He was really clever! As a result, even though I’m right-handed, nearly 40 years later, my left hand is still stronger than my right.
Many, many years later, I saw a 16-year-old in a fitness group using similarly makeshift equipment. He complained that he couldn’t afford to buy a barbell, so he had to make one himself with cement, but he still lacked a bit of money to buy a steel pipe to use as the bar. I asked for his address and then ordered a set of barbells and dumbbells for him on Taobao. You should know that in China, steel is not expensive because we produce about 1.2 billion tons of it annually… So, the whole set only cost 11,000 yuan (around 1,500 USD).
When he received the gift, he was as happy as a child! (Well, he was a child after all…)
I miss my father, who has been gone for many years... I think of him every day and miss him very, very much... (No wonder Chairman Mao once said that China and Africa are both part of the Third World-we have so much in common😁😁 )
