Yep, It's about falling apart due a drug-induced high that makes everything just a bit better. Lol, most posts in here make me feel old... When it used to come on mtv or the radio I'd often sing along with it to my kids, while dancing my six-year old daughter around the room - of course without letting them know what the subject was.

This song is a very cleverly written and performed song. It's such an upbeat song, which is why it was a huge radio hit, but the lyrics are about addiction to meth and chasing a high. It's sort of representative of a drug addict - typically they try to hide behind smiles and jokes, but deep inside there's pain and issues.
yup. Methamphetamine not only transverses the blood-brain barrier faster than most chemicals known to man, but is also a MASSIVE Dopamine creator (your happy brain juice). It also affects the reward center of the brain within seconds of using. It literally "can" be the greatest feeling for some users that they will ever feel. This is why it's so addictive, because how do you just STOP using the one thing that's made you feel like you know what God & Heaven feel like? People that suffer from Neurodivergent disorders like ADHD make up the majority of addicts, since their disease literally deprives the brain of Dopamine (in a roundabout sort of way. In ADHD, your brain produces Dopamine, it's just that the Dopamine literally gets "lost" on it's way to the proper areas in the brain that it needs to get to...ironically). So in essence, a lot of meth addicts are just undiagnosed/untreated neurodivergents that are self-medicating.
I went back and listened to this album recently and realized how phenomenal it was. I didn't even realize at the time. It's one of the greatest from that era.
Yesss let’s keep going down this 90’s train! Other great radio hit songs by Third Eye Blind are How It’s Gonna Be, Never Let You Go, and Jumper. Also would love for you guys to do so Everclear’s songs “Father of Mine” and “I Will Buy You A New Life.”
It really is almost perfect. Last few songs on the album didn’t get radio play but they were excellent too. Saw them in concert for the Blue tour with vertical horizon and Splender opening. 🔥
The whole album centers around this couple's addiction to each other, drugs and alcohol, as well as how often they both try to quit. There's suicide, overdoses, moments of sobriety followed by heartbreaking relapse. It's absolutely brilliant how the album is really one long tragic story.
The late '90s was a great time for these nifty, fast-talking, catchy-as-hell pop songs. Others you might like include "One Week" by Barenaked Ladies and "When I Come Around" by Green Day.
Third Eye Blind always takes me back to a time when things were so much simple. No social media, no jobs or bills to worry about,... just having fun with my childhood friends in my small town.
This definitely isn’t a G rated song. Ironic you didn’t have the words posted this time or you might have had a different take on this extremely catchy tune. I love it…
Ahh... this song brings back so many memories. Love and Drugs of a tainted youth. Its about doing crystal meth with a girl. The part that was reversed (and mouth covered) was "Crystal Meth" and its a highly toxic but true love relationship that would never work but still means a lot I'm glad you guys did this song. Also, love y'all's shirts today. Much Luv from Central Florida

I just went and started listening to the album bc it’s so amazing and never gets old!! I also love all their other songs but my favorite is deep inside of you
That, coupled with that drum intro are a couple of my favorite things from the 90’s. That and... “She’s got her jaws now locked down in a smile, but nothing is alright.” As a person who went through some fairly serious drug issues, this song is eminently relatable🤣
One of the lines that was cut is by far one of the most important lines in the song. “She’s got her jaws locked now in a smile, and nothing is alright. Alright?”
Reminds me of riding in the car with my boys when they were growing up, love watching you guys!! Keep it up. I think you Guys should do Skillet "Legendary" Brad would love the lyrics and Lex would be jamming:)
That's funny as I remember listening to Skillet when they were just known as a Christian music band. One of my favorites to this day is their song Saturn. This is also when P.O.D. where just playing gigs at churches because they were also doing Christian music. I saw P.O.D. play live at a church event in the 90's.
This song is extremely dark, but Stephen Jenkins was smart enough to give it that pop music vibe and basically got it played despite the lyrical content.
Question is, why? There are quite a few songs like that out there. Such an upbeat vibe, only to find out its actually about their mother killing herself or something....
damn, i really wish you had gone with a lyric video, explicit version of this one, because the first half of that break in the song, at that 4:12 mark was removed on the radio edit. Semi-Charmed Life Lyrics - Third Eye Blind
Semi-Charmed Life Lyrics
Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo…
I’m packed and I’m holding
I’m smiling, she’s living, she’s golden
She lives for me, says she lives for me
Ovation, her own motivation
She comes round and she goes down on me
And I make her smile, like a drug for you
Do ever what you wanna do, coming over you
Keep on smiling, what we go through
One stop to the rhythm that divides you
And I speak to you like the chorus to the verse
Chop another line like a coda with a curse
Come on like a freak show takes the stage
We give them the games we play, she said…
I want something else to get me through this
Semi-charmed kinda life, baby, baby
I want something else, I’m not listening when you say good-bye
Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo…
The sky was gold, it was rose
I was taking sips of it through my nose
And I wish I could get back there, someplace back there
Smiling in the pictures you would take
Doing crystal meth, will lift you up until you break
It won’t stop, I won’t come down
I keep stock with a tick-tock rhythm, a bump for the drop
And then I bumped up, I took the hit that I was given
Then I bumped again, then I bumped again
I said…
How do I get back there to the place where I fell asleep inside you
How do I get myself back to the place where you said…
I want something else to get me through this
Semi-charmed kinda life, baby, baby
I want something else, I’m not listening when you say good-bye
I believe in the sand beneath my toes
The beach gives a feeling, an earthy feeling
I believe in the faith that grows
And the four right chords can make me cry
When I’m with you I feel like I could die
And that would be alright, alright
And when the plane came in, she said she was crashing
The velvet it rips in the city, we tripped on the urge to feel alive
Now I’m struggling to survive,
Those days you were wearing that velvet dress
You’re the priestess, I must confess
Those little red panties they pass the test
Slide up around the belly, face down on the mattress one
And you hold me, and we’re broken
Still it’s all that I wanna do, just a little now
Feel myself, heading off the ground
I’m scared, I’m not coming down
No, no
And I won’t run for my life
She’s got her jaws now locked down in a smile
But nothing is alright, alright
And I want something else to get me through this life
Baby, I want something else
Not listening when you say
Good-bye, good-bye, good-bye, good-bye

And I wish I could get back there (Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo…)
Someplace back there, in the place we used to start (Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo…)
I want something else (Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo…)
From the 1997 Self Title album ... For me the best album ever made.
Happy, upbeat, all-american crystal meth addiction vibe mmmh :D
Loved this tune in 1997 when I was 13, and it still rips. Great reaction guys!
What a great tune to react too!
My junior high nostalgia is heavy with this one. First CD I ever bought with my own cash at Hastings! 😂
Man they got rid of Hastings where I live 😔😔😔 so many memories
This song should have died with Hastings.
Lex had the exact same reaction to Semi-Charmed as I did the first time I heard it.
