    In college I minored in math. I took every level they offered in algebra, trigonometry, calculus, and differential equations and made straight A's. I graduated in 1973 from Florida State University. Now I'm 74 and all the math I learned, except for the basics of algebra, has leaked out of my brain. It's true that if you don't use it, you lose it.

    I am an honours degree mathematician but I taught many years in primary school ie seven to eleven year olds . I taught top juniors Sine, Cosine by measuring using large cm squared paper to create a circle and using a millimetre ruler to measure the lengths to a reasonable accuracy. A concept can be made simple as in this case to measuring lines and creating basic angles using a protractor.

    I've always been shit at Math (advanced Algebra specifically), and I failed calc 1 twice, as I always knew the Calculus steps to solve the problem, but my algebra was bad. I at least got partial credit for showing that I knew the steps to solve the problem, in Calc 1.
    Eventually, I moved onto Calc 2, and it was a ridiculously new beast. I still understood the Calculus steps I needed to do to solve the problem (could explain in detail why we were doing what we were doing), but even though I would try to "grovel for points" (which my Physics prof taught me), I'd get awarded 0 points, because I did not get the correct answer. I ended up re-taking Calc 2 3x, failing all 3x, and giving up.
    Point being, if you're young and smart enough to be watching this video, make sure that you pay EXTRA attention in Algebra; Algebra is BY FAR the most important aspect of any advanced Math class.
    Edit: As an aside, I think it's bullshit to have Calc 2 as a requirement for stuff even like Geology (which is what I was going for), as even Engineer friends of mine have said they just punch input data into a computer... completely blocks people like me (98% in Cell/Molec Bio, 99 in Zoology, 96 in Botany, A's in both Ochem A and B), who are intelligent, love the Sciences, yet are bad at Math, from doing what they love in life.

    I actually didn’t think series were that bad. There was a learning curve with them, but once I figured it out, it’s pretty easy. I prefer it over integrals because with integration it is so easy to make a mistake because of all the simplifications you have to do. The problems are longer even if they’re not necessarily harder.

    “How can something with infinite terms have a finite value?”
    Isn’t the whole idea of a derivative that you represent something finite value and dividing it up into infinity many terms?

    • @LudusYT
      @LudusYT  5 років тому +9

      I believe you are confusing derivatives with integrals. An integral will add up an infinite number of terms to possibly get a finite value in return. If you are still confused on this, let me know and I can explain it further.
      Continuing with this integral idea. Yes, an integral is very similar to an infinite series; extremely similar in fact. With an infinite series, you are still adding up an infinite number of terms to possibly receive a finite value back. A really intuitive example of how this can happen is with the repeating decimal 0.1111....
      You can represent this as an infinite geometric series 0.1 + 0.01 + 0.01 + 0.001...
      An infinite number of terms adding to be a finite value.
      It’s cool stuff! Let me know if you have any questions. I hope this response helped.

    You are moving on and not allowing your fellow students pause to take in what you are saying. Why not present this as you did in boxes but take a bit more time to show where they fit into the course. You seem to take for granted people have done this course and know what you are talking about. The comments that are positive seem to be from those looking back like you and already know what you are talking about. You just gloss over concepts like parametric equations without stopping long enough to explain WHY use them. Similarly partial fractions are just mentioned with not even a simple example of the idea. You could take a very simple fraction and just using A and B explain it. Yes it gets more complicated but the basic idea would make things clearer if you have not met it before,

      @@CliffordMorris-ls9lc Appreciate the comment. I made this abt 6 years ago with nothing but the intention to help. I’m not assuming people have taken this course before watching the video. I’m certainly not taking anything for granted. That part of your comment is wrong, but everything else is helpful suggestions and constructive criticism and I thank you for that.
