I talked to aquatic life, it’s a redesign, these are more slim and have the ballast between the bulbs VS the other fixtures which have the ballast above the bulbs. Like you I hate the power cord situation, luckily with the provided hardware I made it disappear... almost! Haha
I thought I subscribed to your channel since a long time ago but somehow it got taken off?! I subbed again, I have to see what you did to manage the cords!
haha UA-cam has a tendency to do strange things we will never understand! I didn't hang mine from the ceiling, instead I used my existing 8020 light mount which made wire management a lot easier for me. I also threw the Neptune AFS on one of the universal mounts from aquatic life and it worked out great!
I am with you there! We'll see if they revisit the idea on V2 of the fixture (Assuming there will be a V2! haha). I don't think it is a make or break on the fixture though.
ua-cam.com/video/D2ZL_6GkaZg/v-deo.html I personnaly made some modification on the light so the cord is on the same side you can see it on my video They made new bracket to get different size of width now, also add a rounded plate for A160 ! And thank you Inapp for let me putting this little link ;) (if ever somebody see this ?!)
Aquatic life has been around for a while, I have one of there first 6 bulb t5 fixtures. Always affordable was the first affordable t5 fixture with timers already in the fixture, great to see them come back with something new. Great vid man keep it up
Retrofit looks nice man! As enthusiastic as you are about the hobby i can't believe you haven't upgraded to a bigger system yet. You show the true patients that this hobby needs. Wish i could do the same, I cant leave things alone long enough.
Nice Bro. I'll stay tuned for that. I'm sure keeping two reefs no matter what size is an extra challenge. I have a 72 gallon bowfront now for my reef setup. 125 is my next upgrade as well. I have the equipment , just waiting for a deal on the tank also.
I like the process you took. I have the lights about 3 weeks now with Kessil 360 and I really like it. My issue with the unit is cord management but I already got past it. Watch your alk and tank consumption levels over the next few weeks. My corals loved the new light so much that they started to grow and all my levels dropped. The length of the video doesn't matter as long as it's fun and informative.
Only reason I have a t5 retro with my hydras on my 120, is to completely get rid of shading. I hate the shading from low spread of led. T5 are killer for that. Good vid. Glad you like that t5 combo!
Hey tank looks great! Really like the sleek look of the radion fitted between the two t5 bays. Acclimation is key for light switches. Just take it nice and slow. Good luck!
T5's!!!! Yes!!!! Smart choice man with the led and t5 combo, it's the best of both worlds! You will start seeing some great growth in your Corals with the t5's! Now you can keep sps!
In a month or so I’d love to see an update on how your tank reacts to it and how much extra electricity it uses. I am planning for a new tank and definitely want to go T5 hybrid but if it used much more electricity than LEDs I don’t think I can go for it. Tank is looking great by the way!
T5 does not use substantially more electricity than LED. Obviously if you add 10 T5 bulbs to replace one led fixture you will use more power, but for a comparable amount of life the costs less bulb replacement would be similar.
Hardcore!! :D Hey man, lovin' your tank. The way the monti cap is on one side and that sarc is on the other looks awesome. Your BTA seems very happy. Great job with the install. I totally agree about eventually bringing the fixture down a bit lower. Looks clean with the radion in there. Nice that you could get some par reading so you know what's actually going on with the light intensity. Thanks for the video.
Great vid. After seeing Than from tidal garden make the switch to T5 i followed and never looked back. A cheaper version is the T5 led bulbs on amazon in a 4-6 bulb fixture.
So far I notice a bit more fluorescent in the orange/rainbow bta, and corals seems a bit more metalic (especially the green), but beyond that it's not much difference. I do hear that it takes around one month to really start noticing a difference
I totally get you on the coral colors and changing lights lol. I went from a t5 only to Chinese black boxes to ai Primes now back to T5 😂 Love the videos man! Keep’em coming!
Man, I am not going through the whole thing again, lol. Hind-sight I wonder if I could have just rested the Focus1 on top of the T5 fixture... but that probably won't look too clean and the light beam may still get blocked by the two fixtures. Hmm...
Some ideas: 1) If you want the absolute best, switch the Radion to a 150w Phoenix metal halide. Hamilton sells a nice little Bimini fixture. It should retro in with some hardware from your local store. I've been thinking about going this way on my 50g cube. Bulb changes? Phoenix bulbs have proven to last 18-24 months. Heat? 150w halides don't put as much heat in the water as people claim. I bet you can actually use some heat in the winter time. Selling the Radion will net enough to totally switch over. 2) If continuing with the LEDs, go with 2 Blue Plus, 1 Actinic and 1 Coral Plus. You need to fill in the holes that a Radion misses. Don't trust LED manufacturer spectral plots. They smooth them out like crazy. It was very eye opening seeing true LED spectral plots. Even halide and T5 bulbs get smoothed plots to some degree. 3) If you want colors, don't chase things. Put your lights on and leave them alone. Get your chemistry super stable and test regularly. 4) #hardcorereefsquad
Great points Ryan! I have always been curious about MH but I will follow your #3 and let this set up sit for a bit, as I think we may have a winner here (as soon as two B+ becomes two Actinic 03... already ordered before this video). I wasn't aware of the LED spectral plots, I will have to read up more in this, thank you for the info! #HardcoreReefSquad
Inappropriate Reefer You won't find much on true LED plots. I used to have some from the ever popular CREE LEDs but can't find where I stored them. Might be on my old, dead laptop. They are very narrow. Lots of spectrum gets missed. This is why we see Orphek with so many colors now. Keep up the good work! Love your videos and following along
Thank you for the review. There is less shading, nice. Assuming your par levels are correct, I think the fixture does not punch out enough par, given the small footprint of your cube.I refer to the t5's only.Especially for high light demanding corals like milles and acro's. Not a problem for you yet as you dont keep these yet. I suppose the manufacturer has designed the unit so the users led light gives out more par.
I know the video is a bit old and you may have figured out a solution for the rotating LED, but there is a conversion kit that will space the T5 fixtures further apart. That would possibly allow you to use your rotating LED
ATI Coral plus my friend. look it up, best growth bulb by far. Blue plus is just too blue by itself. China Blackbox 165w LED & sunblaster t5 is the most cost effective "hybrid" your going to find.
I would of ran the radion and the t5's of the bat! but that's my personal preference, is the tank as long as it is wide? if so maybe rotate the fixture and consider relocation power to the ceiling to make it look neater if you need that new tech =)
I looked at this fixture recently and do not like the cords on opposite sides. It is a more affordable combo. You can’t beat t5s. I get better color and growth from tanks using t5’s. I have a kessilS360we and hate it. Have had other highend led fixtures and do not like leds at all. I think you will like the t5 addition and bet your anemone will color up more! Btw i like the new rockwork 👍🏻. Thanks for sharing as your vids are very informative!
Hi I have a silly question, why are you changing your lights all the times and testing so much with it, the lights you had before looked like they were fine and the coral growth was good? I enjoy your videos all the time. have a nice Suanday
Because T5s are tested and proven. Great spread & coloration with very little shadow. LEDs are great for shimmer and have an amazing look but tend to shadow. Put T5s & LEDs together and you have the best of both worlds (similar to Halide but better IMO) all while hopefully giving the corals the best spectrum, par & coverage to keep them happy, healthy, colorful and growing.
Good question, I touched on it at the end of the video (sorry it's long). I am chasing the orange / rainbow bubble-tip anemone color. I saw how it looked under T5 in person and it slowly lost that overtime in my tank. With the water paramter more in-check now the bta remained the same color, so now I am experimenting with different light hoping to find the ideal light to color the bta back up.
I have an 8 lamp T5 hanging over my 75 gallon. It will not stay level because of the cords. I just sit my best looking coffee cup on top to level it out. It doesn't bother me that much.
Inappropriate Reefer And I have another tank, similar to yours, that I hung a hybrid T5/MH fixture above. But before I hung it, I sat it on the glass top just to see what it would look like. I turned it on and about 10 minutes later, I heard a loud crash! Holy crap... I ran in there and had to make a quick decision: Take sizzle fixture out that was now under water, or unplug it first. I grabbed the fixture! I saved the MY bulb from frying, but I had to replace the T5 ballasts. Glass was everywhere in the tank. It was crazy. I'm glad I wasn't electrocuted. And I'm an electrician. Lol
how do you record videos with the blue led light on? every time i try to record or take a picture of my reef tank, its just a big blob of blue lol. BTW awesome channel man your the first reef enthusiast i have ever started watching and im hooked to your content keep up the good work!
Hey man thanks for watching! On my P&S and DSLR I can manually set the White Balance, I would turn it all the way up (10,000K), sometimes it is still a little blue but at least it's not completely blown out and still retain some color information. I would then fix it in post production in Premiere. With a phone I use a orange filter clip that seems to cancel out a decent amount of the blue.
Wow is that shimmer i see in the tank? So the LED's aren't drowned out by the T5's? I always thought that T5's would take away any chance of shimmering?!
What color bulbs u prefer, i use zetlight zt6800, maybe be u have heard about it, which u use ufo! My led light just have a lot blue led and 2 group white, so i decide to get coral plus and purple bulb so i can mix with my led if i want more blue...
This fixture just seems like it was rushed. A power cord coming out of each side is a serious design flaw. You eliminate the peninsula tank market and push more non diy people to make a diy fixture. I get that it's a low to medium end fixture but still. You change your lights a lot, to do a true test you should keep this on for 6 months or longer.
Peltwerk They are HEP ballasts. Wholesale on them is likely $10 at most. So $20 in ballasts at the very most. This light is overpriced at the quality. Very poor design overall and I really hope Aquatic Life fixes the issues
How are the channels on the t5? Can you have blues come on first, then whites? I was hoping to have blues come on as leds ramp up and whites as the leds are up all the way each day
+Gt Muldowney I have been thinking about this actually, although shipping would be a pain, so I’m leaning towards donating to local reef club as raffle prize...
I brought a used fish tank floroscent and it looks purplish when I turn it upside down is it good for plant growing? But in the tank doesn't really look purplish what type is it?
Good vid. You'll prob have to switch out two of the t5 bulbs as changing one only prob won't make mich difference. I've used blue plus in conjunction with ati purple plus and ati coral plus t5 bulbs with good results. The purple plus looks like it has similar spectrum to blue plus but adds red's. Same with the coral plus, it adds red and green. So you lose nothing by substituting the blue plus with coral plus or purple plus, but you gain other colours rather. And thus reduce the Windex look which I hated as well. Obviously the same does not apply to true actinic bulb which is a different ball game altogether.
@inappropriate reefer, I have jbj45 rimless tank but im concerned if it will be too heavy for 2nd floor apartment? What to do I already have one. Does anybody have big aquarium upstairs? Need help
I believe someone on R2R had a similar concern with a 75g tank and was ready to hire an engineer, but everyone told him it will be OK. 45g IMHO should be OK... my 45g is technically on the second floor as well.
+Lawrence no OEM non-hanging option, but check out the pinned comment, he rigged up an arm and mounted it to the stand, may just be what you are looking for 👍
Hi May i ask some question sir. 1. Can you dimm power at T5? 2. Is that a little bit too high position for T5? 3. Why your sps monti at middle, but LPS at top?
To be completely honest, the LEDs I have can keep the corals healthy and growing with no issue at all. In my case I am getting the T5 mainly to try to color up certain corals (specifically the orange/rainbow bta)
Billy Pipes I agree! I've ran through 4 different 6 bulb fixtures between 2 tanks in the past 12 years. Sick of buying a new fixture every few years so I'm on led now. I get by with that by stacking 3 hydra 52s in a standard 120. Love whatcha doing on your channel too man. Keep it up.
Inappropriate Reefer very good :) after reading a lot on what bulb to get you should swap out a Atinic for a Coal + bulb. I guess that combo is great. If you want even MORE white then swap out the Atinic for a Purple + and a coral +
I talked to aquatic life, it’s a redesign, these are more slim and have the ballast between the bulbs VS the other fixtures which have the ballast above the bulbs. Like you I hate the power cord situation, luckily with the provided hardware I made it disappear... almost! Haha

I am with you there! We'll see if they revisit the idea on V2 of the fixture (Assuming there will be a V2! haha). I don't think it is a make or break on the fixture though.

Hey man, I think having two tanks really helped keep me in check... although I am keeping an eye out for a nicely plumbed used system that is 120g+!
Nice Bro. I'll stay tuned for that. I'm sure keeping two reefs no matter what size is an extra challenge. I have a 72 gallon bowfront now for my reef setup. 125 is my next upgrade as well. I have the equipment , just waiting for a deal on the tank also.

Great to hear man, I will be watching your progress as well since you are a month ahead of me!
I made the switch from LED to T5 and I had better growth and coloration. Your montipora is gonna grow like crazy #reefsquad
Awsome video, definitely worth watching for 20 plus minutes!
The tank looks incredible!
Thanks man!
Good luck!
Glad you took the Focus out and added the Radion. Perfect combo IMO. I think in time you will be very happy. Now LEAVE it alone. lol
T5's!!!! Yes!!!! Smart choice man with the led and t5 combo, it's the best of both worlds! You will start seeing some great growth in your Corals with the t5's! Now you can keep sps!

😂 the ending though... thanks for sharing all your info man. Tank is looking great as always.
Looking forward to this progress because I always thought of something like this in my 60 gal cube
Great vid. After seeing Than from tidal garden make the switch to T5 i followed and never looked back. A cheaper version is the T5 led bulbs on amazon in a 4-6 bulb fixture.
Love the par values over the corals! I have t5/led hybrid as well, btw.
Gotta love T5 hybrids!
Brand new to me, but I am enjoying them if I do say so! haha
+MileHighReefers I’m a believer now!
Nice man! I just ordered the current usa led fixture.
Also have you noticed any major changes in your coral so far
So far I notice a bit more fluorescent in the orange/rainbow bta, and corals seems a bit more metalic (especially the green), but beyond that it's not much difference. I do hear that it takes around one month to really start noticing a difference

Love the videos man! Keep’em coming!
+IBernE the struggle is real 😂
All in one year (This year) by the way 😂
Just turn the whole fixture so you can use the focus fixture. Make it so the bulbs go from front to back. It won't change anything spectrum wise
Man, I am not going through the whole thing again, lol. Hind-sight I wonder if I could have just rested the Focus1 on top of the T5 fixture... but that probably won't look too clean and the light beam may still get blocked by the two fixtures. Hmm...
Billy Pipes not a bad idea
Awesome review brother and it looks very clean with the g3

great vid man. getting this light soon so found your video helpful. thanks and keep up the good work!
Good DIY work bud. You did fine
I feel like the T5's make your reds darker, almost purple. I like it.
"I measure once...I drill 5 times"...freaking hilarius!
Nice fixture. Way better with the radion. Led/T5 combo is the best lighting imo
You make great content
+MD Supreme thanks man, I appreciate it!
Thank you for the review.
There is less shading, nice.
Assuming your par levels are correct, I think the fixture does not punch out enough par, given the small footprint of your cube.I refer to the t5's only.Especially for high light demanding corals like milles and acro's.

915MANG whats up!!!!
pelphrey What’s Up Pelphrey!
I dnt like just the t5's on there own as there's no shimmer but with the leds aswell looks great 👌 and I like the long videos 😊
LOOKS GREAT......
You should mix ATI t5 actinic and blue plus together. I heard it looks magical
I would of ran the radion and the t5's of the bat! but that's my personal preference, is the tank as long as it is wide? if so maybe rotate the fixture and consider relocation power to the ceiling to make it look neater if you need that new tech =)
Hey nice video thanks for all this info, why did you change back to led?
Haha. Love the lights but really love the pointer!
Great looking fixture, especially with the radion! Let us know how t5 go for you 👍 Tanks looking good
I looked at this fixture recently and do not like the cords on opposite sides.
Thanks man, I am crossing my fingers as well as the switch was not exactly cheap! =)
They make excellent affordable RODI units too
Nice lights love this video
Hi I have a silly question, why are you changing your lights all the times and testing so much with it, the lights you had before looked like they were fine and the coral growth was good? I enjoy your videos all the time. have a nice Suanday

I have an 8 lamp T5 hanging over my 75 gallon. It will not stay level because of the cords. I just sit my best looking coffee cup on top to level it out. It doesn't bother me that much.
+Freeyourmind LOL!
Inappropriate Reefer
And I have another tank, similar to yours, that I hung a hybrid T5/MH
fixture above.

Helpful. Thank you!
Wow is that shimmer i see in the tank? So the LED's aren't drowned out by the T5's? I always thought that T5's would take away any chance of shimmering?!
Great video. Question, what setting are you using for the radion? Is it the AB+?
You should try some reef brights next season.
Im thinking about doing the same thing and am curious about how this played out long term Did you make a follow up video.
You should try some reef brights next .
do you still use this hybrid setup? if so, do you have an updated video for this tank?
So how high did you end up hanging it I just got mine... never mind you said 10 inches
$160 reasonable? You haven't thought or looked at the ballasts that are in there. Those are fairly high quality.
Peltwerk They are HEP ballasts. Wholesale on them is likely $10 at most. So $20 in ballasts at the very most. This light is overpriced at the quality. Very poor design overall and I really hope Aquatic Life fixes the issues
it looks like the fixture is mounted more towards the right side of the tank. thats why the right side is more illuminated.
+Spoolin Shawn My OCD side curses you for pointing it out...
the radion is amazing with the t5
How are the channels on the t5? Can you have blues come on first, then whites? I was hoping to have blues come on as leds ramp up and whites as the leds are up all the way each day
You should do a give away to get rid of some of those led fixtures
+Gt Muldowney I have been thinking about this actually, although shipping would be a pain, so I’m leaning towards donating to local reef club as raffle prize...
What size was the bulb you bought for this!? Thanks
And the end which t5 Light you have now 4 blue plus ?
Do you get any LED shimmer with the T5's on?
How can I make the Gen 1 hybrid dimmable so I can use a controller
My two clownfish just discovered my anemone
Congrats!!
I know this has nothing to do with the video but do your clownfish have names?
The female yes, I call her 海威 after an orca from Ocean Park HK (the pattern on the clown reminded me of that orca), no name for the dude yet!
Do you still have the XR30w RMS
Everyone switch to this fixture. Hope it comes to Thailand.
can I mount 3 radions with the 36" version ?
Try one or 2 pink or purple bulbs
Stephen Chin-Sang - like the idea of adding an ATI True Actinic.
I swapped in an ATI Actinic 03 and really looked the look, ordered another actinic and should get here next week!
@inappropriate reefer, I have jbj45 rimless tank but im concerned if it will be too heavy for 2nd floor apartment? What to do I already have one. Does anybody have big aquarium upstairs? Need help

is there a 36inch version or only 24inch
thatsLITfam 22 yes
Yep, I’m using the 36” version.
pelphrey which leds are you using

does this have a non hanging option? something with arms on the side? this would go perfect to supplement my 1 kessil
+Lawrence no OEM non-hanging option, but check out the pinned comment, he rigged up an arm and mounted it to the stand, may just be what you are looking for 👍
Can’t you take the fixture off and flip it to have the cords on the same side? 🤔
Somebody mentioned that in one of the R2R thread, but people said the mount does not work in reverse... I have not personally tried it though.
Great idea, but i hate the cable managemment issuses for this unit. Looks really messy
I didn't have high expectations knowing from what they have put out before
Im glad bc it is just what I thought cheaply made and way overpriced imho
What bulbs did you go with?
+Kandamonium I have 3 Blue Plus and 1 Actinic 03 at the moment, have one more Actinic 03 coming in the mail
Interesting ! 🖒for long video
Hi
May i ask some question sir.
1. Can you dimm power at T5?
2. Is that a little bit too high position for T5?
3. Why your sps monti at middle, but LPS at top?
You don’t get T5s for the look it’s for the coral growth and health. 🤔
To be completely honest, the LEDs I have can keep the corals healthy and growing with no issue at all. In my case I am getting the T5 mainly to try to color up certain corals (specifically the orange/rainbow bta)
I've been saying T5's for YEARS!!!
Keep it up.
Time for more SPS 🤣
I have a 34 gallon cube.. 20x20x20.. would this 24 inch be too much for it?
FIRST LIKE!!
also i kinda want this
you need to add a single ai prime
Switch that focustronic out for a kessil a360we. You’ll thank me later.

What bulbs did you end up with?
I think I will get ATI 2 Blue +, 1 Coral + and 1 Purple +. What are your thoughts?
I ended up with 2 Blue Plus and 2 Actinic 03. B+ is a very nice all around bulb but I’m not a fan of the Windex color, will try different combo soon!
Inappropriate Reefer very good :) after reading a lot on what bulb to get you should swap out a Atinic for a Coal + bulb. I guess that combo is great. If you want even MORE white then swap out the Atinic for a Purple + and a coral +
