I have a NR1200 and need to use an EQ for all sources. Does it make sense to use the NR1200 as a preamp and place the EQ in between NR1200 and 2 channel amp 7025? Thoughts?
Thank you for keeping your videos clean and informative. I like the fact I never have to worry about what might come out of your mouth with my daughter next to me.
Just a quick note: The SR8015 has a pre-setting which shuts off the power amp and allows for processing only if one is so inclined or you can set the front L and R to be process only and run it through a fine amp that way for 13 channels. I love mine.
Excellent information for the beginner ! I agree with Marc below, there needs to be more affordable options for pre/pros, I feel there is a market for them.
Youthman how would a DAC hook up with these things. Seems like Audio companies want you to buy two systems - HT and Hifi? Who has room for all those speakers. I would just like to be able to do very good HiFi L/R plus Center Channel for TV.
There's the Outlaw model 976 7.2 Pre/Pro BUT it's only available in the US. It's also slightly pricey for what it is coming in at $1000 USD. It's also outdated now with only hdmi 2.0/1.4.
I went back from separates to a receiver for conveniences. I had a Rotel preamp processor 1570 and Rotel 1565 D - class 5 channel Amp .I Now have the Marantz SR6014 and I can say I haven't greatly lost any sound quality in the change over only noticeable is a slight decrease in dynamics. I really enjoy the tonal quality of the Marantz SR6014 overall. I think like I did careful research to find the receiver that suits yours needs but without a doubt if i had the money i would got back to separates but at this time I'll stick with my Marantz. Receiver.
@@Youthman I read there is problems with the new HDMI 2.1 chip on 2020 Marantz, Yamaha and Denon AVR, that they give black screen with certain input. Do you know more ???
It's amazingly hard to find clear connectivity descriptions like you did in this video. I wanted to confirm that my understanding was correct before buying some gear, and your video has finally given me complete confidence.
Sometimes I hear of people using an old AVR’s amplifier section connected to another AVR’s pre-outs to save some money instead of buying an amplifier when they already have an amp in their spare AVR. I don’t recommend that approach, but it’s possible.
its' actually still pretty amazing the sound quality you get from better AVR', after all these years! Technology definitely kept improving, and the performance per dollar improved to a point where you actually need separates , for the average person! I'd say most do just fine running speakers as small, using powered subs, and that's all you'll likely need. Yes, better equipment dictates separates, and you get better potential sound quality. Again, depends on speakers and rest of the system though, including your expectations, lifestyle, setup, acoustics, etc whether the law of diminishing kicks in above or bellow your needs. When in doubt, and money's not an issues, yes, get separates for higher end performance
Love seeing videos like this. It would be really nice to see other amps reviewed and see what your opinion is on any sound differences for home theatre viewing when using separates with different amps.
I have owned 4 amplifiers. I have never noticed a difference in sound between them. I think processors and AVR’s make more difference in how your system sounds.
Thank you soooo much, guess you solved my problem, I have been using a Yamaha AVR, but the audio that I have been getting was not what I want, guess I need a processor. Thx for the great info.
Truly excellent informations, I just want to add a few additions to this valuable information. If you are not using power-hungry speakers such as Bowers & Wilkins 800 Diamond series , the processor you will purchase will only have a placebo effect.
Need some advice. New to Home Theater Community. I just purchased a Marantz 7015 AVR. I love the sound I’m getting from it. I had a Onkyo 787. I notice an immediate difference in sound and clarity. Was this a good purchase or should I go for the 8015 you talked about in one of your video
Im interested in a double-blind test to see if you or others can tell if there is an audible difference between using a AVR as a Pre Pro and a dedicated unit. The only thing I think might make a difference is the balanced outputs if you have some kind of unusual interference
Hard part about that is it’s not an easy switch from the AVR to a Processor. Also you would have to level match them since XLR are topically have a few dB gain.
After doing some research, unfortunately I cannot use my receiver As dedicated amplifier. Went ahead and ordered the 7705 and another external amplifier. I feel confident that youth man knows what he’s talking about and I should be happy with the change
can i ask, i have marantz pm 10 but i dont have avr like you said to runing my ps 5, so i dont need to buy new amp but just go buy avr n pair with my amp to running my 8k tv ? note i just have a 4 speaker bnw 1 subwoofer n tube pre amp custom...
I have a Denon 4400 and I have 2 amplifier ati 3000 three Channel and bass x 6 for my Surround channel thinking buy Marantz 8015 or marantz 7706 please let me know thank you
Yes you definitely can, my system is a Marantz av7005 my sons bought me for my 60th birthday, I had a Carver av705x 5 channel amplifier. When I went from an older Rotel Rotel RTC 965 pre-processor to the Marantz all I can say is WOW.
I have the merantz 6014 I need to know where do I hook up the rear heights and where do I hook up the front heights I have 4 cealing speakers 3 fronts with atmos heights built into them the 9080 x towers with the atmos up firing speakers but don't know where to hook them up so the only place I have left is my subwoofer my question is can I hook up the extra atmos to it ?
Thanks for this excellently informative video! I've been wondering about AVR vs separates, and now I fully understand the pros and cons of each. Thank you good sir!!
I like my AVR, however, it irked me that it did not have a PHONO input. I'd like to add a pre-amp so I can connect my classic turntable to my AVR. will this work or will I have to get one of those phono pre-amps. Does it even make a difference?
I have a dumb question. The Monolith amp does not have a remote for volume control. Does that mean the volume is controlled via a Marantz processor and it’s remote?
Hai sir am using Marantz SR 8012 AVR with Bic America PL980 tower PL 66 surround PL 28ii center channel which power amplifier to suitable my system, Marantz MM7055 or emotiva basX 7 which one suitable power amplifier sir pls guide me thank you
Can you connect more than 2 amps to a processor like that or emotiva. Say a 3 channel for fronts and center. And 2 more 4 channel amps. 1 for satilites and 1 for atmos?
@@Youthman well I'm actually looking for a similar setup as yours. 2 klipsch rp 8000 for fronts. Maybe a 504c and 2 600ms for 5.2. I was looking at the denon 6700h. But if I went the processor route. Could you recommend a processor that has 4k 120 hz in the ballpark price range as the 6700h. Thanks bud
I had the SR8015 with Klipsch and never felt the need for an amp. If the speakers sound clean at the volumes you enjoy listening, you likely do not “need” an amp. Adding external amps is a good thing as it allows for better dynamics and overhead.
Youthman what should I do? I was going to get the Marantz 8015 but now I don't know. I have an Outlaw 7000, it is 140x7, also I have all Klipsch speakers 7.2 setup adding atmos few months from now. So I will have a total of 11.2 setep. Sorry a lot of info I know but in my question is this. I have no receiver as of the moment. It was fried by The Electric Company working on the lines, I have bad luck. So I'll need a good new receiver and more amps...... Basically I want to go separates, I'm going crazy just thinking about it🥴🥴🥴 help me Obi-Wan you're my only hope.
Hi Youthman. Till yesterday I was an AVR guy and I am sure my next upgrade will sure be separates. Thanks to your simple yet informative way of explaining. It helps people like me who are learning and yet are climbing up the ladder to make an appropriate upgrade decisions. Now I have a job of finding Monolith 11X from the right source. Thanks and love to listen to you.
As Always AWESOME Chat...I use separates in my living room & basement. i would never do jus AVR... My basement is really a different story. That equipment is the Same as a Theater rack and theater Speakers. So, the sound is different from my living room. Gotta luv Sound Pressure...Stay Safe, Be Safe!!!!
im using my yamaha aventage 2080 as pre out it sound really good i try a couple of different amplifier it make a huge difference compered to the avr amplification.. i just cant spend 4k for a processor where i am in canada price are nuts ,, i know the newer denon avr allow you to turn off the internal amplification this can be a great solution for those like me
Hey youthman, I recently bought a 8500h, I had a very good dealer who offered me to check both marantz 8805 and Denon 8500h in my home. I setup both systems and to my disbelief I found the marantz 8805 was completely lifeless and Denon was full of liveliness...... Pls give a clarification on that. Btw I upgraded from 4400h I used external amplifier for both units. I used rca outputs from marantz I used Denon in preamp mode Pls clarify
I have not reviewed either one of those but I have yet to hear anyone that owns an 8805 say that it was nothing but stellar. Not sure if it was a set up issue, difference in calibration etc. There are a lot of things that could’ve caused a difference
@@Youthman even I wanted to own a processor from marantz. I had very high expectations for 8805. But the bass response was very poor. Bass integration was poor. The dealer even told me that I won't like 8805 since it doesn't sound as good as 8500. But I insisted him to sell me the processor, so he just gave me both to find out for myself..... Even Denon sounds dynamic only in preamp mode. Once i enable the internal amps the life just goes away..... Whether they do it intentionally I don't know. But once internal amps r enabled it sounds like junk. I have not tried connecting 8500's internal amps yet.
I went separates about 5 years ago and never looked back. Marantz AV8802a with a 5 channel Emotiva XMP AMP and a smaller 8 channel Basx for surrounds and heights. But one thing that was been problematic, these big boxes generate a TON of heat!
What do you think of running Marantz Cinema 50 with the MM7055? I want to extend to 7.2.4 /5.2.6 and would run as many speakers through the external amp.
My understanding of this video is that, you can use a prepro and and a dedicated amplifier INSTEAD of a AVR and not all THREE interconnected to get a better sound..please confirm.
So Micheal, nice video..do you then need two systems or three..you showed two marantz and another amp.i have an onkyo rz810 av receiver..how many more in addition to my avr do I need to go separates?...you video helped but confused me at the same time..
Sorry for the confusion. An AVR like you have is not separates even if you add an amplifier. When I refer to separates it’s when you have a dedicated processor and a dedicated separate amplifier. Your Onkyo Is an AV receiver or an AVR as explained in the video
@Youthman I have one question which might be helpful to all who are planning to upgrade from existing sound bar and woofer setup.. Can you please let us if this set up is possible.. Can I buy an avr and can I use existing sound bar as centre speaker and existing woofer and I am planning to buy only sorround, atmos and back speakers.. All I am trying to do is to save some money on centre speaker and woofer by replacing them with existing sound bar and woofer Let me know if this works? I have Harmon Kardon Sabre35
Excellent presentation, however, little confusing at the beginning. When explaining the AVR you started by talking about the processor component. When you talked about the processor, you noted the lack of amplification. All true, however, to a novice they may think that the pre/pro did not have all the processor compensation like Dolby, Atmis etc. Which obviously is not true. Bottom line, the only difference really is the amplification on the AVR vs no amp on the pre/pro.
I appreciate you Youthman. Keep up the good work, I enjoy your vids. I'm also looking forward to/wondering about your review of the marantz sr8015 and/or 7015. I'm looking at most likely buying the 7015, as I have a five channel amp to power the mains and two rears, and would need the receiver only for the four atmos speakers I'm running so the additional power per channel rating of the 8015 is not usable for my situation. I do wonder about if there is any sound quality difference between the two though.
I thinking about picking up a Marantz SR6015 and a couple of amplifiers. Since the new models have an internal amp disconnect mode at this point, is there any benefit from a Processor?
@@Youthman Oh but its 4k and 8k is coming out. Might get power amp first. Any power amps that are 13 channel. I got a yamaha AVR with Klipsch speakers.
Finally the AV7706 is there this fall with its 8K/60Hz 4K/120H and full Hdmi 2.1 features stack. Can't wait to hear from it on your channel. I plan to upgrade my Denon AVR-X5200W. I'm looking at this separate solution paired with Monolith amplifiers as well. I originally planned to use the Denon AVR-X4700H in pre-amp mode, but your explanation about better audio components and better separation is what triggered my interrest to a dedicated processor. For sure I'm going for a separate amplification. Much cheaper on the long run!!
Nice. From your 8012 receiver to 7705 pre/pro does the sound differences is day and night? how about from 7705 to monolith HTP1? does HPT1 sound much better than 7705? Because me myself heard so many people saying pre/pro is much better than AVR, so I am wating from my Emotova XMC-2 to replace my Denon AVR X6400H. I am expect a much better sound from XMC-2. We'll see when the XMC-2 arrived. Actually I prefer HTP1 than XMC-2 but unfortunately HTP1 is not available in my country.
Wow, this was super helpful! Definitely earned a sub! :) Thanks man! I just picked up a set of 5.1 speakers from Aperion Audio over black friday and I am looking forward to exploring this new realm of tech. :) Thanks!
Youthman, for my 7.2.4 I’m running Monolith 5x200 external amp along with my denon avr4300. Is it possible to use the denon to amp my surround rears n atmos if I go with the Marantz AV7705? Hope that makes sense
Definitely go separated over higher end avrs. But, it’s hard to recommend the appropriate brands and models without knowing the budget you’d like to stay at for the pre pro and amp. I’m sure Youthman will recommend one brand and model for a $4000 budget and a totally different brand and model with a $10,000 budget. Knowing how much you have to work with will allow Youthman to give you the best advice on what to buy, IMO.
Thanks for the video. I love to get your thoughts on the new pre amp mode on the 8015. Does the performance gap between processor and receiver still exist?
Hey Youthman, If, I go out from a processor with XLR's, can I still use RCA's for my subs? Because I use a MiniDSP. Do they allow for mixed outputs like that, some RCA, and some XLR?
Wait wait hold up so if u can u the outputs from the pre amp / processor can’t u just use the rca out puts from the avr ? I mean seems the same doesn’t it ? Interested instead of buying a processor , would the sound be any different ?
That is the ENTIRE point of this video. That’s is exactly what we did. Preout from AVR to amp. AVR was in preamp mode comparing to Processor connected to same amp.
@@Youthman lol my bad man I got I interrupted half way through then I was like (30 mins later) watch the rest and was like arrerrr dam now I see all good I’ll delete this comment 🤣👌😎👍
I have a question. I mentioned (cut and pasted) in a couple videos - not sure about your or not, to be honest, about ordering an external amp (Tonewinner AD-8300PA 11-chahnnel amp) as a first step towards separates. I've heard it mentioned somewhere or other that the internal amps can cause interference with the processing chips and that going full pre-out would benefit clarity, but I can't find articles or videos confirming or denying. I e-mailed my brother, a Ph.D. who teaches electrical engineering at a university (under grad and grad classes) He agreed that single amping a speaker at 240W (I have Klipsch RP-60Mii for L/R) I would get better results than my current bi-amp with ~120W., but he's very suspect about the EMI and would appreciate any article or video about it. Any way you could post a link if you can find anything that might be useful?? My current AVR is a Denon X4700H and I have a 7.2.2 system. I just bought the amp a minute ago...I better not be disappointed ! :)
I have on mini amplifiers over the years, none of them have been absolute night and day difference than using internal amplification. With that said, I have always had highly efficient speakers, so they didn’t require a lot of power but me personally, I like having the extra headroom that an amplifier provides no matter what volume I want to play my system, I don’t have to worry about clipping or not having enough power. Know how much of that can be heard, that’s highly subjective and debatable.
Thank you very much ! I have Emotiva 11 channels amp, want to pair it with a Marantz 8805A OR SR8015 in pre amp mode, less $$, so do you the chance to compare a AVR in pre-mode vs a dedicated processor ?
Hi Now im standing for this Question to seperate Processor and Amp. Have you any experience. Is the SR8015 in Pre Amp Mode better than the AV8805. Thank you for you enthusiasm in your Videos and many greetings from Austria.
Hi Chrisi, I have not had any experience with the 8805. I did not find the SR8015 in preamp mode to be better than the AV7706 so I would assume the same would be true for the 8805. But then again I certainly would hope not due to the massive difference in price
Well done sir! I’m at the point trying to decide between av receiver and processor. With the av receiver you need a cooling fan so when you go processor and amp will you need to place a fan on the amp like you would an av receiver?
I just made a video a few days ago sharing my experience between the Marantz SR8015 AVR and the AV7706 Processor - ua-cam.com/video/xYACtM54_kc/v-deo.html I use an AC Infonity on my Monolith 11X amp since my current AV7705 does not get very hot.
Excellent explanation and very informative. Just one question what is the difference between balanced and unbalanced out. Do we get any advantage or gain quality with balanced out. Also I watch all your videos, they really good inspirations for home theater buffs.
Balanced outputs have no benefit other than being better at canceling out external noise, which shouldn't be an issue anyway at short distances like if you just have an amp sitting right on top of a processor and you just have some 1-2 foot RCA cables connecting them. If you're not running 10-20+ foot cables, there's no reason to use balanced. There is absolutely no difference in quality and unbalanced is 100% not a problem.
Awesome video! Would small non-dedicated rooms benefit from separates as well? I have a room thats 8 feet deep by 12 feet wide (not ideal shape) with a 100 watt/channel, 2 channels driven in a 5.1.2 config. I love my in wall klipsch speakers (c: 5502 l/r: 5800) but they sound a little empty. Would separates or an amp help?
@behexen250 appreciate the feedback! I ended up getting the Denon x4500h which made a big difference. I think two things helped. The power (25 watts more)... and having a setup mic to use room correction. My previous Onkyo 100 watt/ch/2ch used AccuEQ and was configured for speakers I had long ago (i lost the setup mic a while ago) so I tried my best manually configuring distance, level, eq for the Klipsch...The front speakers sound great now. Everything does! I don't know if an amp would add much, but maybe? I still don't know if an amp would add much or just suck power.
Great vid I went from a pioneer lx503 to a Marantz av7704 made a big difference in sound went with outlaw amps but I had a problem come up yesterday the directv guy came out yesterday and hooked up the equipment now I have a loud buzzing sound coming from my speakers it is very annoying is it anything I can do to get rid of it
@@Youthman any idea how I can fix the problem I didnt have cable b4 either I just got for the NFL season to watch the games but that buzzing isnt worth it
Hey Michael, (WARNING THIS COULD BE LONG) my name is Roy Diaz and I am new to this whole home theater gig but I am getting a lot of knowledge for this from you and your UA-cam counterparts. I will in the future be getting a Klipsch Reference Premier line (with either Klipsch SPL or SVS line for subwoofers) for a possible 7.2.4 or 7.2.6 (depending on space) Dolby Atmos system with by-amping my fronts (L&R) and my surround rears (L&R). This video has helped me a lot (along with other videos) to understand how to use AVRs with amplifiers and also utilizing separates, which I am considering very highly. I do have a couple of confusing questions that I am asking help with. Essentially, if I am going to use separates, how(1) and with what(2) would I need use the Marantz AV8805 in order to complete my sounding/video staging to include by-amping connections for my fonts (Klipsch RP-8000F) and surround rears (Klipsch RP-6000F or the RP-600M)? Any and all sounding advice or considerations would be most helpful. I know it is all up to my preferences and space but in this case knowledge is power. Thank you very much. Please let me know through this comment thread (instead of the video teleconference that you all do daily) as my schedule does not permit me to be available during your UA-cam Daily HI-FI.
So the signal XLR cable is bigger (thicker) then the speaker wire because it makes scenes right? And then inside the sprakerbox the wire is probably thinner then what you bought companies: say no more
May i ask, the tone color will be more influence by the pre amp or the power amplifier? Also, i am actually thinking of getting a SR8015 or a SR7015 + MM8077. I am not an audiophile as it requires a lot of cash, just that i am unfortunate enough to be able to hear the difference. Thank you for any reply.
MUCH more influence from the preamp than the amplifier. The amplifier’s job is to remain as neutral as possible and merely amplify the signal it is presented with.
Great vid my 929 onkyo that i just sold was 185watts 9 channel when i choose my new amp how can i make sure its as powerful as my onkyo i just sold don’t know if the 929 onkyo spec is way over rated ?
Your Onkyo is rated at 185 watts with only 1 channel driven. Power Output: 185 W/Ch (6 Ohms, 1 kHz, 1% THD, 1 Channel Driven, IEC); By the time you add eight other speakers, it’s a lot less than that, probably well under 100 W per channel. Just about any amplifier will be able to provide that easily and more efficiently.
Youthman ok thanks so much i think most latest marantz models will out do my 929 i just don’t know which model to go for my budget is 3 thousand Australian
As I explained in the video, I have added several amplifiers to a VR and did not hear much of a difference. It was not until I added a dedicated processor that I heard the biggest difference
I believe separates...pre-pro and pwr amp run cooler, and more efficiently than an AVR and an external amp. A pre-pro does a better job of processing signals than an AVR, and has higher quality components. ... You get what you pay for. The Anthem AVM 60 is a beast !
@@Youthman Nice video. I believe you need to include Anthem in your links and give it a try. I've owned Sony, Denon, Martantz, B&K, and Integra, and my current Anthem AVM60 is easily the best processor or AVR that I've owned.
@@waynebradley2 I agree about running cooler and efficient which would help reducing noise floor. But do pre-pro really have better component compared to it's counter part AVR? I've read on many forum that it's just equivalent AVR without amp. For example AV7705 has same component as SR7015 but without amp. The reason why pre-pro are not much cheaper than AVR counter-part is because of economy of scale. They might be selling 20 AVRs for every single pre-pro sold.
@@bakulg1131 I don't know "for sure" I've never disassembled one ... but most videos and reviews I've seen from the audio/HT "experts" say that processors generally have better quality components than AVR's.
Great review i had not seen a side by side comparison nor the difference in depth . Could you PLEASE compare the Marantz SR8015 to Anthem AVR1140, and tell us about their sound differences.
Besides the better serration of instruments and better dialogue, did you actually notice a noticeable audible difference in sound quality with changing from the avr to the pre/pro? If so what kind of percentage would you say?
I’ve just set up the Marantz 8015 and I’m really having a hard time justifying adding more power. Channel separation seems really good. No audible distortion. I like to keep things simple when possible.
Great and very useful video. Thanks a lot for that. Question: What about to hear just music in surround or stereo as well? Are them also a very good option? Because I had a bad experience to have just a single unit with the amplifier integrated (Denon in my case) and the sound for music listening is poor, not clear, etc. So, for instance, with that marantz AV7705 with an amplifier as Monolith 11x... the sound quality for just music would be clear and high quality? or what would be your recommendation about this? Thanks!
Awesome video @Youthman. Will running front staging LCR through a dedicated amp and leaving Surround and Atmos speakers on Receiver makes much difference ? I have ordered Emotiva amp for my front speakers. Just want to know from an expert :).
I bought the SR8015 because I wanted the 13 channels of processing. Before I made the purchase, I looked at the AV8805 Processor, but it was $1200 more. Do you know why the processor is so much more expensive?
@@Youthman Thanks for the quick response. It must be a really high quality DAC for that much! $2300 more than the AV7705, with only 2 more channels of processing. Can't wait to get your review of the SR8015. Mine is still in the box as I am upgrading my theater.
@@christophersmith3860 in Mr Jones (from sound united) exposition of the New lines he explained that in this year 8015 they put the same dacs from the 8805 and better hdam which is the mains differences from last year 8012, so it should produce better sound quality or at least that's what I hope, jeje I received my 8015 but haven't installed it yet

Thank you Casey. I’m glad you found the video helpful
@Youthman --- Any benefit to having an AVR and Pre/Pro w/wo amplifier working together in a movie/game or music center setup?
Sometimes I hear of people using an old AVR’s amplifier section connected to another AVR’s pre-outs to save some money instead of buying an amplifier when they already have an amp in their spare AVR. I don’t recommend that approach, but it’s possible.
@@Youthman--- So using two AVRs is a maybe... but using an AVR with a Pre/Pro or amplifie is a no?
@antiWhiteism777 it would be the same thing. I’m not sure why you would want to do that.
its' actually still pretty amazing the sound quality you get from better AVR', after all these years!
Thank you soooo much, guess you solved my problem,
I have been using a Yamaha AVR, but the audio that I have been getting was not what I want, guess I need a processor.
Exactly
I have the merantz 6014 I need to know where do I hook up the rear heights and where do I hook up the front heights I have 4 cealing speakers 3 fronts with atmos heights built into them the 9080 x towers with the atmos up firing speakers but don't know where to hook them up so the only place I have left is my subwoofer my question is can I hook up the extra atmos to it ?
Thanks for this excellently informative video! I've been wondering about AVR vs separates, and now I fully understand the pros and cons of each. Thank you good sir!!
Thank you kindly. Glad you found the video helpful
great video...what are your thoughts on the monoprice amp....605030 ..?..for hometheater...they are on amazon....
I have been looking for a processor with an eARC HDMI port but have only found AV receivers with it. Are you aware of a processor with eARC?
I like my AVR, however, it irked me that it did not have a PHONO input. I'd like to add a pre-amp so I can connect my classic turntable to my AVR. will this work or will I have to get one of those phono pre-amps. Does it even make a difference?
Unfortunately I’ve never owned a turntable so I’m not sure I would be much help answering that
I have a dumb question. The Monolith amp does not have a remote for volume control. Does that mean the volume is controlled via a Marantz processor and it’s remote?
Yes, most amplifiers are controlled by your AVR or Processor.
is the AVR processing the video signal, or just passtrought it
Hai sir am using Marantz SR 8012 AVR with Bic America PL980 tower PL 66 surround PL 28ii center channel which power amplifier to suitable my system, Marantz MM7055 or emotiva basX 7 which one suitable power amplifier sir pls guide me thank you
Can you connect more than 2 amps to a processor like that or emotiva. Say a 3 channel for fronts and center. And 2 more 4 channel amps. 1 for satilites and 1 for atmos?
Absolutely. Each channel on an amp uses a single RCA cable. The processor doesn’t care what channel or amp it’s connected to
@@Youthman well I'm actually looking for a similar setup as yours. 2 klipsch rp 8000 for fronts. Maybe a 504c and 2 600ms for 5.2. I was looking at the denon 6700h. But if I went the processor route. Could you recommend a processor that has 4k 120 hz in the ballpark price range as the 6700h. Thanks bud
I had Klipsch Reference 7.1 with Marantz sr5015. Adding a power amp will benifit in sound signature. Pls guide.
Thank you
So if keeping the AVR and just adding separate amps would the AVR processor improve or still be the same?
That’s exactly what we compared in this video.
im using my yamaha aventage 2080 as pre out it sound really good i try a couple of different amplifier it make a huge difference compered to the avr amplification.. i just cant spend 4k for a processor where i am in canada price are nuts ,, i know the newer denon avr allow you to turn off the internal amplification this can be a great solution for those like me
Hey youthman, I recently bought a 8500h, I had a very good dealer who offered me to check both marantz 8805 and Denon 8500h in my home.
I setup both systems and to my disbelief I found the marantz 8805 was completely lifeless and Denon was full of liveliness......
Pls give a clarification on that.
Btw I upgraded from 4400h
I used external amplifier for both units.
I used rca outputs from marantz
I used Denon in preamp mode
Pls clarify
The important thing is you found what sounds best in your setup
I went separates about 5 years ago and never looked back. Marantz AV8802a with a 5 channel Emotiva XMP AMP and a smaller 8 channel Basx for surrounds and heights. But one thing that was been problematic, these big boxes generate a TON of heat!
I use prosessor to use with active speakers! Very usefull and you have optimal aplification to each channel because the amp is build for the speaker!
So, I can't afford separates anytime soon, but which AVRs do the best sound processing most similar to a pre/pro?
Completely subjective. I have been very pleased with Denon and Marantz. Many like AVR’s with Dirac Live
Hi... Iam.Planning to Purchase Marantz AV8805.. Do I need to Purchase AVR with this?
Great vid sir, wanna ask you, i found amp like parasound dont had output for sub, if using pre/pro how to connect them?
Which brand of XLR or balanced inputs did you have for the video?
What do you think of running Marantz Cinema 50 with the MM7055?
I want to extend to 7.2.4 /5.2.6 and would run as many speakers through the external amp.
My understanding of this video is that, you can use a prepro and and a dedicated amplifier INSTEAD of a AVR and not all THREE interconnected to get a better sound..please confirm.
You’re exactly correct
Thanks, so you said going with Yamaha CX-A5200 preAmp with Yamaha MX-A5200 power amplifier instead of Yamaha RX-A8A receiver better choice?
All I am trying to do is to save some money on centre speaker and woofer by replacing them with existing sound bar and woofer
Let me know if this works? I have Harmon Kardon Sabre35
Excellent presentation, however, little confusing at the beginning. When explaining the AVR you started by talking about the processor component. When you talked about the processor, you noted the lack of amplification. All true, however, to a novice they may think that the pre/pro did not have all the processor compensation like Dolby, Atmis etc. Which obviously is not true. Bottom line, the only difference really is the amplification on the AVR vs no amp on the pre/pro.
Hi I need some help with my 5.2 Dolby atmos set up ? Can you help ?
I appreciate you Youthman. Keep up the good work, I enjoy your vids. I'm also looking forward to/wondering about your review of the marantz sr8015 and/or 7015. I'm looking at most likely buying the 7015, as I have a five channel amp to power the mains and two rears, and would need the receiver only for the four atmos speakers I'm running so the additional power per channel rating of the 8015 is not usable for my situation. I do wonder about if there is any sound quality difference between the two though.
My guess is there not be much sound difference between the 7015 and 8015
Hi Youthman, do think if is possible a software update or firmware for dtsx pro on the marantz pre/pro 8805 ? Thanks
You will be able to upgrade the 8805 to DTS:X Pro but the HDMI board will need to be replaced
I thinking about picking up a Marantz SR6015 and a couple of amplifiers. Since the new models have an internal amp disconnect mode at this point, is there any benefit from a Processor?
Is tehre a Marantz 13 channel power amp and a 13.2 pre-amp? Cannot find it online.
Hi Ernest, it's the AV8805 - www.marantz.com/en-us/product/av-separates/av8805
A gifted teacher! Thanks for helping me from start to finish and beyond!
Thank you Martin. I’m wanting to put together a course for those new to hone theater.
Wow, this was super helpful! Definitely earned a sub! :) Thanks man! I just picked up a set of 5.1 speakers from Aperion Audio over black friday and I am looking forward to exploring this new realm of tech. :) Thanks!
Awesome! Thank you and hope you enjoy the content
Youthman, for my 7.2.4 I’m running Monolith 5x200 external amp along with my denon avr4300. Is it possible to use the denon to amp my surround rears n atmos if I go with the Marantz AV7705? Hope that makes sense
Would you pick a pre amp over the x6700h denon and if yes which one with similar specs and a separate amp to go with it?
Definitely go separated over higher end avrs. But, it’s hard to recommend the appropriate brands and models without knowing the budget you’d like to stay at for the pre pro and amp. I’m sure Youthman will recommend one brand and model for a $4000 budget and a totally different brand and model with a $10,000 budget. Knowing how much you have to work with will allow Youthman to give you the best advice on what to buy, IMO.
Thanks for the video. I love to get your thoughts on the new pre amp mode on the 8015. Does the performance gap between processor and receiver still exist?
Will soon find out
Hey Youthman, If, I go out from a processor with XLR's, can I still use RCA's for my subs? Because I use a MiniDSP. Do they allow for mixed outputs like that, some RCA, and some XLR?
Yes, that’s exactly what I do. XLR and RCA preouts are always “hot”
@@Youthman okay, thanks Youthman 👍.
Hi youthman, i own a denon avr x3800h. What processor and amp would you recommend in 2024?
I am going separates. Great video and thank you.
hi sir, how about avr+external amp via preout. isnt it the same as separate?
I explained it in the video
Will a pre pro still be worth it if it will only be used in a smallish bedroom 16sqm or would a marantz 6015 be good enough?
Hi Jonathan, I'm all for going separates but for a small bedroom, an AVR would be more than sufficient.
So how do you add like a blueRay or PlayStation with separates?
Same as you do with an AVR. Add it to one of the HDMI inputs.

Absolutely
That’s exactly what we did in this video
@@Youthman Ok i was not sure, so SR 7705/Balance Cable/Monolith sounds better than SR8015 in pre-amp mode(amp disconnect)/RCA cable/Monolith. Thanks !
No worries. Others have asked the same questions you have. I thought I made it pretty clear in the video but maybe not.
I just made a video a few days ago sharing my experience between the Marantz SR8015 AVR and the AV7706 Processor - ua-cam.com/video/xYACtM54_kc/v-deo.html
I use an AC Infonity on my Monolith 11X amp since my current AV7705 does not get very hot.
Any system could benefit from separates. It just depends on if the additional cost is worth it to you
@behexen250 appreciate the feedback!
How was the monolith htp with Dirac? I want to upgrade to separates from my avr with an external amp but I’m not sure what to get yet.
It has performed very well. I will be doing my final review next week
The exact video i was looking for all night last night. Thank you for making this.

I don’t have cable but I have heard that cable boxes can often introduce ground loop hum in your system.
@@Youthman any idea how I can fix the problem I didnt have cable b4 either I just got for the NFL season to watch the games but that buzzing isnt worth it
what are the audible difference btwn avr and pre/pro?
You could try the SR8015 or the SR7015 without an amp. You might not need one.
@@Youthman Thank you for your insights.
How is the 2 channel sound between the two?
Great vid my 929 onkyo that i just sold was 185watts 9 channel when i choose my new amp how can i make sure its as powerful as my onkyo i just sold don’t know if the 929 onkyo spec is way over rated ?
Your Onkyo is rated at 185 watts with only 1 channel driven.
Power Output: 185 W/Ch (6 Ohms, 1 kHz, 1% THD, 1 Channel Driven, IEC);
By the time you add eight other speakers, it’s a lot less than that, probably well under 100 W per channel.
Just about any amplifier will be able to provide that easily and more efficiently.
Youthman ok thanks so much i think most latest marantz models will out do my 929 i just don’t know which model to go for my budget is 3 thousand Australian
Does AVR with all preout + amp give same benefit as going separates
@@bakulg1131 I don't know "for sure" I've never disassembled one ... but most videos and reviews I've seen from the audio/HT "experts" say that processors generally
have better quality components than AVR's.

I will be working on it the first of next week
You are the best
I try
Hi can use emotiva power amplifier with a normal AVR. STRICTLY TO POWER THE SPEAKERS
Absolutely. As long as your AVR has preouts for all of your speakers.
Thank you. Yes it does have pre outs
Great you’re good to go
Great review i had not seen a side by side comparison nor the difference in depth .
It’s not night and day but certainly an upgrade. Maybe 25%? Hard to put a percentage on perceived improvement in sound.
Youthman sounds about right. Thank you youthman!
Can I use the Monolith X1 to my Marantz SR8500 or SR5600? Thanks.
As long as your AVR has either RCA or XLR preouts yes.
@@Youthman yes it does have RCA Sir ☺ Thank you very much!
For a newbie on a budget it sounds like purchasing used separates will yield better output than a new mid tier avr with pre-outs? thanks
That's what I did. Buying used is a great way to save money, if you're willing to go that route.
You can find some killer Youthman Deals on the used market.
So thankful people like you exist. I love learning from clear and concise videos like yours. Well done, thank you!
Thank you Jeff. It’s people like you that motivate me daily.
I’ve just set up the Marantz 8015 and I’m really having a hard time justifying adding more power. Channel separation seems really good. No audible distortion. I like to keep things simple when possible.
The SR8015 has a beefy power supply. If your speakers are efficient, you could definitely power an entire system with it.
I can't wait for your review on the new Marantz AV 7706
Thanks. It’s in the works
The 8805 is supposed to have a higher quality DAC and other components than even my AV7705.
That’s good to hear for consumers. That trickle down technology. I too am looking forward to getting it hooked up next week after I finish the review of the Monolith HTP-1.
I have a $2500 budget and want to go seperates. I have a 5.1.4 setup. Any recommendations?
Unfortunately your budget is too low for separates.
@@Youthman I dont need a full 9 channel amp do I? What about a decent avr and a emotiva 5ch?
That would fit in the budget. That’s just not a true “separates” since you are not using a dedicated processor
@@Youthman ok well I may have to up my budget then! Thank you for the info!
Glad to help
