It's likely that the shocks are functioning normally. My stock R1 is the same way, and all the magazine tests at the time complained about how stiff the ride was. It was supposedly designed to kick ass in the stock autocross class, and it does.
Mine had suspension squeak. It was dried out old suspension bushes. It’s a 30 year old car, he should replace those with new stock units. No need for poly bushes, the stockers are pretty hard rubber.
I like a firm ride and even I thought the R1's ride was pretty harsh. I went with Ohlins coilovers and loved the change. The ride quality was hugely improved . Plus, I can put the stock Bilstein setup back on if I ever consider selling.

Hey brooks. Congrats on the rx7. You met me at one of Harley and Aaron’s car shows. I had the red rx7 with the ls3 swap after blowing 7 rotaries over 25 years. Re the stereo I would suggest you pull the stock stereo and storage bin and put in a new single don contemporary stereo with navigation etc. I got a pioneer set up. It’s great. Re the shocks/suspension. I did a tein set up with an electronic control unit for adjustability. It’s great. Congrats again. Let me know when you back up in Maryland. Craig z.
It's amazing what a difference of 20yrs makes. Back in Jan 2003, I bought my 94 Touring Vintage Red Rx7 with 65,000 miles bone stock off ebay as well and paid $13,500. Car has 110,000 miles now with DIY 20b swap. 😁 Take care of that R1 because she's a beauty. Edit: On the factory radio, you can actually wire in an aux 1/4 jack to existing wires on the back of the radio. These cars had a cd changer as an option so if you wire directly into that, you'll get sound. Trying to find the link for you but this was something I did as an experiment way back in 2009 and it actually worked and sounded perfect. My car has a double din now.
Brooks, car looks awesome! Had a base 93 VR rx7 years ago which I regretfully sold. You should definitely keep it stock but make improvements under the hood if you have not done so. Such as replace the old hoses with silicon hoses, upgrade radiator, and put a downpipe. With a downpipe, you can definitely hear the turbos spool up. Inside the car, you should put an a pillar boost gauge. This way around 4500 rpm, you can see the secondary turbo kick in as the boost drops a bit and then increases. A cat back exhaust would be great as well. Any bolt on mods beyond exhaust and downpipe will require ECU tuning. Best of luck on this gorgeous RX7.

There is nothing like sliding into that cockpit with those gauges. Your car is too clean to mod but I went w/ Tein coil overs(fantastic) and a set of 18's, looked great but added weight you could feel. I went with the basic, kept my stock turbos, did intake/full exhaust, suspension.

Man what a find! I had one just like it back in the late 90's, a 1993 RX7 R1 in Competition Yellow Mica. Loved it and yes it was not an easy car to maintain but what a sports car! Sold it in 1998 if Im correct, wish I had not! Fyi I took it once to Pettit Racing in tge Ft Lauderdale area to give it a tune up, etc, but that TT plumbing was complicated and it was always loosing boost. Looking at yours Brooks makes me want another! Keep it stock, well maybe some suspension to lower a bit. !
My 1993 Rx7 base model with no wing, no additional oil cooler, no front strut tower brace and almost empty weighed in at the truck scales at 1210kg or 2662 lbs. By the way the gas tank is 78 liters or around 20 gallons.

This was my "dream car" back when it came out. I almost bought one used in 1997 but did not have proper place to park it. I know they are riddles with problems but the silver version is one of the best looking Japanese cars ever made. I have a 2002 Honda s2000 which satisfies my itch for never owning the Rx7 but this was truly a beautiful ride.
I had the exact car for years. Loved it. Change the gaskets to get the stock car into the 5’s on 0-60. The turbos are constantly bleeding are and oil. Keep it stock. I actually put a splitter in behind the radio so I could listen to music. Also change the exhaust and your in the 13’s. Love that car.
@@davidh7339 everyone that had either antifreeze or oil running through it. Under boost all the plumbing would expand and loose pressure. Hence always having to put more oil in.
@@briansackstein3117 I've tried replacing those intercooler hoses with the silicone ones from Pettit Racing, but it didn't seem to help too much. I might have to work on the rat's nest of vacuum hoses next.
Hi Brooks, Motorweek did a test of the mid 90s jdm greats it is still posted if you visit their site. They tested a red 93 R1 like yours and it posted a time of 0-60 of 5.4 seconds and a standing quater mile of 13.9 at 104 mph.I would keep your car stock except for the 77 vacuum lines that make the sequential turbos operate. Replace them with silicone lines that are tie wrapped at each end.Also remove the y pipe that combines the 2 turbos into 1 with the Mazda RX 7 Efini one so you do not have a potential boost leak there as well.Regards Lou
Congrats on the purchase, beautiful car!. I sold my 93 touring back in 2004 for $14,500 . I would change the air separation tank with a metal aftermarket one, they are known to leak.
The drag testing really shows how far cars have come. The Mazda's 1/8 mile time is about the same as your 1/4 mile runs in the Plaid. Defintely keep it stock. No changes you make short of a complete gutting and much more powerful engine will get the RX-7 anywhere close to your Tesla or Ferrari.

Love it. I had a 94' when you were putting out great content back in the late 90's! I'd go with some Koni shocks, a downpipe and RB dual exhaust, and maybe a radiator. Keep it looking stock, but add at least a little rotary sound and make it a touch more reliable.
this car is absolutely beautiful! leaving it stock is the best choice imo, but putting on some reversible modifications wouldn't hurt either. in the JDM market, mazdaspeed had made an A-spec front bumper for this, and it looked gorgeous. nicer wheels and tires are great too!
Leave it stock it's awesome the way it is. Have the radio fix and daily that beautiful Rx7 for ever, you have enough toy's to play with so keep on keeping on brother!!!
I was an American car guy then but I was always amazed at the design inside and out of this car and the other ones you mentioned. This design inside looks like something that could come out now and to be honest the exterior as well ...I could totally picture LEDs around that taillight lens.
energy suspension poly bushing kit, and a set of KYB AGX struts with Racing Beat springs, it will keep it close to stock height and only be slightly stiffer than stock, a great setup if you want to still use it outside of aggressive driving all the time. This is how i have my FC set up, but i know it works on an FD as well.
Hey buddy I remember talking to you on RX7 forums a LONG time ago. You were in pembroke pines at the time running 11s in an RX7 then but I think you started mowing through engines with the upgrades so kind of stopped. I believe you bought an SC430 shortly after that and just kind of stopped with modifying the RX7 and sold it. I had a license plate with DIDUWIN on it and you commented that you had that first lol. I had no idea this was you but anyway, love the content and channel.
Brook this car is incredibly clean and timeless!! I’d highly recommend not tuning it much or at all considering how iconic this car is. Fun fact is that I’ve been in a Mazda RX-7 first generation (the car was a 1987 one specifically) and it was fully gutted to essentially a race car that weighs about 1,500LBs and has about 120HP. The gear shifts and that OG Wankel Rotary engine along with the non-restricted exhaust (sounded like a lawn mower like seriously) and felt incredible. It held about 16 gallons of fuel I believe but it’s so capable of going around the track as I was lucky enough to be a passenger in this car. The main reason why I decided to mention all of this is because I honestly think changing the car this drastically and even on a smaller scale isn’t worth it considering how nimble the car already is. Love the R1 a lot as it looks more race spec too!
Take it to Pettit racing to Cameron Worth! Get the 3mm apex seals and a street port along with the Turbos stuffed and your all set! I really miss my RX7 😢
You can always get the updated radio from the later nb miatas that looks almost like the spirit r radios and its a bit more modern looking and you can add a blue tooth to it from the back connector....it looks really good and very OEM. Switch all your speakers to audiofrog with a JL vx 8 amp and have it tuned it will sound as good as modern.....for coil overs you want to get ohlins.....they can be tunes to ride smoother than stock with better handling.....most importantly get the 2nd oil cooler if you don't have it...aluminum koyo n flow radiator, cooling is very important. If you can get the OEM 99 spec white dials and a 99 spec nardi steering wheel......it will keep it stock looking but updated. It's a pleasure to be in my car. You can update the twin turbos to sp, good luck finding those..overall you can. Keep the car very stock looking and even get lower 1/4 mile times on stock boost but needs a whole list of upgrades. And it can still be reliable ....whatever you do. Do not go higher boost than 12 with out higher octane....otherwise it WILL be a disaster!!!! And a nightmare!!! Love my FD

Love the stock look. Keep it clean and keep it stock. Upgrade the faults known with history of the car. A throwback JDM battle would be amazing to see!!! 3000 GT-VR4, 300 ZX TT, Supra, , even. Dodge stealth or NSX. That would be great.
I bought one brand new in 1993. Loved that car, beautiful lines that have aged incredibly well. I even shoehorned a child seat in back when my daughter was born, but that only put off the inevitable. The car was tiny! I believe the 0-60 time was 5.2 back in the day which was very good in ‘93.

Keep the radio stock,beautiful shape and condition,dont touch or lower suspension,just keep like it is.2700 pounds is awesome,fuel weighs about 8 pounds per gallon give or take.

Crazy I was a 18/19 year old kid when we met at one of those RX-7 meet ups they had in south FL around the turn of the century. Somewhere in my closet I have a bunch of pictures (on film!) of your car and others from the meets. Also remember you taking me for a spin after the dyno session. This car is in awesome shape for 65k miles, great find/buy. On a related note, It was nuts when I stumbled across you on YT, I was like, I recognize that guy/voice, even all these years later. As a fellow (native) Floridian, I am always quick to recommend your channel. That car is my grail. from 93 to 95... with the pop-up lights... is the epitome of Mazda's brand. My last car, GSL-SE, I sold back in 1995... it was headed to Cuba.... Got an amazing price for it. Hated to see it go... But I soon after bought a 1989 and 1/2 (registered as a 1990) GTU (not the GTUs) with the dual auto/manual ... great car... It's likely that the shocks are functioning normally. My stock R1 is the same way, and all the magazine tests at the time complained about how stiff the ride was. It was supposedly designed to kick ass in the stock autocross class, and it does.
Mine had suspension squeak. It was dried out old suspension bushes. It’s a 30 year old car, he should replace those with new stock units. No need for poly bushes, the stockers are pretty hard rubber.
I like a firm ride and even I thought the R1's ride was pretty harsh. I went with Ohlins coilovers and loved the change. The ride quality was hugely improved . Plus, I can put the stock Bilstein setup back on if I ever consider selling.
Very impressive for a car that old. Definitely keep it stock.

Hey brooks. Congrats on the rx7. You met me at one of Harley and Aaron’s car shows. I had the red rx7 with the ls3 swap after blowing 7 rotaries over 25 years. Re the stereo I would suggest you pull the stock stereo and storage bin and put in a new single don contemporary stereo with navigation etc. I got a pioneer set up. It’s great. Re the shocks/suspension. I did a tein set up with an electronic control unit for adjustability. It’s great. Congrats again. Let me know when you back up in Maryland. Craig z.

It's amazing what a difference of 20yrs makes. Back in Jan 2003, I bought my 94 Touring Vintage Red Rx7 with 65,000 miles bone stock off ebay as well and paid $13,500. Car has 110,000 miles now with DIY 20b swap. 😁 Take care of that R1 because she's a beauty.
Edit: On the factory radio, you can actually wire in an aux 1/4 jack to existing wires on the back of the radio. These cars had a cd changer as an option so if you wire directly into that, you'll get sound. Trying to find the link for you but this was something I did as an experiment way back in 2009 and it actually worked and sounded perfect. My car has a double din now.
And now you'd pay 50k lol.. at least 20-25k for sure..
Brooks, car looks awesome! Had a base 93 VR rx7 years ago which I regretfully sold. You should definitely keep it stock but make improvements under the hood if you have not done so. Such as replace the old hoses with silicon hoses, upgrade radiator, and put a downpipe. With a downpipe, you can definitely hear the turbos spool up. Inside the car, you should put an a pillar boost gauge. This way around 4500 rpm, you can see the secondary turbo kick in as the boost drops a bit and then increases. A cat back exhaust would be great as well. Any bolt on mods beyond exhaust and downpipe will require ECU tuning. Best of luck on this gorgeous RX7.

There is nothing like sliding into that cockpit with those gauges. Your car is too clean to mod but I went w/ Tein coil overs(fantastic) and a set of 18's, looked great but added weight you could feel. I went with the basic, kept my stock turbos, did intake/full exhaust, suspension.

Man what a find! I had one just like it back in the late 90's, a 1993 RX7 R1 in Competition Yellow Mica. Loved it and yes it was not an easy car to maintain but what a sports car! Sold it in 1998 if Im correct, wish I had not! Fyi I took it once to Pettit Racing in tge Ft Lauderdale area to give it a tune up, etc, but that TT plumbing was complicated and it was always loosing boost. Looking at yours Brooks makes me want another! Keep it stock, well maybe some suspension to lower a bit. !
My 1993 Rx7 base model with no wing, no additional oil cooler, no front strut tower brace and almost empty weighed in at the truck scales at 1210kg or 2662 lbs. By the way the gas tank is 78 liters or around 20 gallons.

This was my "dream car" back when it came out. I almost bought one used in 1997 but did not have proper place to park it.
I know they are riddles with problems but the silver version is one of the best looking Japanese cars ever made.
I have a 2002 Honda s2000 which satisfies my itch for never owning the Rx7 but this was truly a beautiful ride.
I had the exact car for years. Loved it. Change the gaskets to get the stock car into the 5’s on 0-60. The turbos are constantly bleeding are and oil. Keep it stock. I actually put a splitter in behind the radio so I could listen to music. Also change the exhaust and your in the 13’s. Love that car.
Which gaskets did you change to improve performance?
@@davidh7339 everyone that had either antifreeze or oil running through it. Under boost all the plumbing would expand and loose pressure. Hence always having to put more oil in.
@@briansackstein3117 I've tried replacing those intercooler hoses with the silicone ones from Pettit Racing, but it didn't seem to help too much. I might have to work on the rat's nest of vacuum hoses next.

The drag testing really shows how far cars have come. The Mazda's 1/8 mile time is about the same as your 1/4 mile runs in the Plaid. Defintely keep it stock. No changes you make short of a complete gutting and much more powerful engine will get the RX-7 anywhere close to your Tesla or Ferrari.

That car is in such good shape that it should be kept as is. If you want to mod one just get a beater frame and do that one to your hearts desire, but this R1 is just too pristine.

Leave it stock but up grade the cooling system. They tend to have over heat problems

Love it. I had a 94' when you were putting out great content back in the late 90's! I'd go with some Koni shocks, a downpipe and RB dual exhaust, and maybe a radiator. Keep it looking stock, but add at least a little rotary sound and make it a touch more reliable.
this car is absolutely beautiful! leaving it stock is the best choice imo, but putting on some reversible modifications wouldn't hurt either. in the JDM market, mazdaspeed had made an A-spec front bumper for this, and it looked gorgeous. nicer wheels and tires are great too!

energy suspension poly bushing kit, and a set of KYB AGX struts with Racing Beat springs, it will keep it close to stock height and only be slightly stiffer than stock, a great setup if you want to still use it outside of aggressive driving all the time. This is how i have my FC set up, but i know it works on an FD as well.
Hey buddy I remember talking to you on RX7 forums a LONG time ago. You were in pembroke pines at the time running 11s in an RX7 then but I think you started mowing through engines with the upgrades so kind of stopped. I believe you bought an SC430 shortly after that and just kind of stopped with modifying the RX7 and sold it. I had a license plate with DIDUWIN on it and you commented that you had that first lol. I had no idea this was you but anyway, love the content and channel.
I would keep this car all stock. you’ve done it so far, keep it up.

Brook this car is incredibly clean and timeless!! I’d highly recommend not tuning it much or at all considering how iconic this car is. Fun fact is that I’ve been in a Mazda RX-7 first generation (the car was a 1987 one specifically) and it was fully gutted to essentially a race car that weighs about 1,500LBs and has about 120HP. The gear shifts and that OG Wankel Rotary engine along with the non-restricted exhaust (sounded like a lawn mower like seriously) and felt incredible. It held about 16 gallons of fuel I believe but it’s so capable of going around the track as I was lucky enough to be a passenger in this car.
The main reason why I decided to mention all of this is because I honestly think changing the car this drastically and even on a smaller scale isn’t worth it considering how nimble the car already is. Love the R1 a lot as it looks more race spec too!
Take it to Pettit racing to Cameron Worth! Get the 3mm apex seals and a street port along with the Turbos stuffed and your all set! I really miss my RX7 😢

You can always get the updated radio from the later nb miatas that looks almost like the spirit r radios and its a bit more modern looking and you can add a blue tooth to it from the back connector....it looks really good and very OEM. Switch all your speakers to audiofrog with a JL vx 8 amp and have it tuned it will sound as good as modern.....for coil overs you want to get ohlins.....they can be tunes to ride smoother than stock with better handling.....most importantly get the 2nd oil cooler if you don't have it...aluminum koyo n flow radiator, cooling is very important. If you can get the OEM 99 spec white dials and a 99 spec nardi steering wheel......it will keep it stock looking but updated. It's a pleasure to be in my car. You can update the twin turbos to sp, good luck finding those..overall you can. Keep the car very stock looking and even get lower 1/4 mile times on stock boost but needs a whole list of upgrades. And it can still be reliable ....whatever you do. Do not go higher boost than 12 with out higher octane....otherwise it WILL be a disaster!!!! And a nightmare!!! Love my FD

I bought one brand new in 1993. Loved that car, beautiful lines that have aged incredibly well. I even shoehorned a child seat in back when my daughter was born, but that only put off the inevitable. The car was tiny! I believe the 0-60 time was 5.2 back in the day which was very good in ‘93.
