XFV-1 is an airplane that I wanted to see in my magazine when I was a child, the one I wanted to maneuver. When landing, control will be difficult because the ground can not be seen. This pilot has a great technique. I bet he also had eyes behind his head.
The Lockheed plane never got the engine it was designed for. The variant of the T40 engine wasn't powerful enough for vertical takeoff, thus the improvised conventional landing gear. The Convair plane weighed one ton less, so it was able to do the full VTOL song and dance.
Tail could have rotated in an X - layout and you would have had four wings but I understand that's not necessarily true in the case of biplanes. Plus additional complexities, weight, potential failures...
What is up with this music. I can't believe they didn't design the cockpit to be like a ball turret so that in vertical flight, the aircraft would be operated like a helicopter where the pilot could see the ground in the perspective of a helicopter or horizontal flying aircraft.
+Jacob David C. Cunningham the complexities in the old Relay contact world would not been safe or practical speaking from a budget platform i'm a thinken.
rotating cockpit sounds excellent , today with fly-by-wire no problem , but then , only a highly skilled pilot will make it happen . They you add in , coming back from a mission , tired possibly wounded , find the carrier at sea , land , rough sea maybe ..........................................nothing to it .
Can you believe those " engineers", designing an aircraft to land IN REVERSE ??????? Yeah, I know... the same kind of "genius", that invented the DOWNWARD ejection seats !!! ( The rescue teams have special crow bars, to pry out from the ground the pilots that ejected at low altitude!!!) - How is this possible ??? - Hope they installed A LOT of REAR-WIEW mirrors !!!! Nice looking a/c, but what a silly concept !!! And to land in smaller warships, in swelling seas??? Pure genius!!! And about those who approved the ( our) money for that ??? "Not responsibles" - as usual.!!! You see... "Peoples money is cheap", right?? BTW: Cut that, not needed, music and give us these technical videos with a/c sound, OR technical useful comments... PLEASE ??? A. Rodrigues..
It's a nice thing to not worry about stalling.
All this in the days before computers and fly-by-wire. Wowser!

A helo pilot on the radio.

Talk about pilots with balls of aluminum.
Jay Trock
And bottoms of steel !!!
Jay Trock talk about German WW2 technology!
More like balls of Titanium!
Can you imagine how loud those contra-rotating props had to be?
Even knowing they both land safely, I always stop breathing as they near touch-down.
"So there I was, hangin' by my prop...no REALLY"

Yeah they did make it an x-shape
This is clean

+Jacob David C. Cunningham The cockpit seat actually rotates about 60 degrees during the transition.
That's cool
If it had a ball turret, imagine how hard it would be to pilot and shoot at the same time. Also, it's a VTOL aircraft, not a helicopter.

Отличное видео, было интересно.

Inspiration for the Star Wars' X Wing Fighter?
