- In a major departure from the regular format, the ongoing NBC Today soap opera of the late '80s dominates the show's first half hour. Bryant Gumbel addresses the widely covered controversies while Jane Pauley ends her 13 year tenure as co-host by passing on her alarm clock to Deborah Norville.
I grew up watching Jane Pauley and I still have great love and respect for her.
Me too!
When I was in HS before catching the bus it was 30 mins of Jayne Pauley every morning I never missed it!
Jane Pauley is now the host of CBS' "Sunday Morning". She succeeds Charles Osgood.
Oh...I loved Jane Pauley on Today...it's was a shame when she had to leave.
+John Duda Jane did a good job at faking this façade.
@TIPTON340--
I totally agree, because after Jane Pauley left the "Today" show, the show's ratings went down the tubes until Katie Couric came along in 1992.
Katie Couric actually began doing "Today" in 1991.
You can tell Bryant is sad about Jane leaving. He and Jane were good friends. I for one thought the two of them were great together. I thought Jane should have stayed on that show.
The hometown girl! I also graduated from the alma mater which is Warren Central High School. I now work at the same station where Jane Pauley got her start at.
Jane always was and always will be a class act. Have followed her in all her roles and continue to love her as she hosts "CBS This Morning".
I wish I'd watched the Today Show in 1989 instead of GMA. The Today Show back then was a lot of fun
This was 2 days before I was born...!
I also remembered Deborah being very argumentative with guests. Not approachable. Too serious. Even when Gumble called her Debbie one day. She seemed miffed.
Jane was actually ousted by NBC as Deborah was much younger. Ratings were falling and u just couldn’t compete with Charles Gibson and Joan Lunden on GMA on ABC. Ratings man. Good thing Jane’s now at CBS Sunday Morning. Good fit for her though.
I was sorry to see her go...XD
4:53, I remember this as a kid. Jane Pauley was always a class act.
As a teen in the 70s growing up with 3 perhaps 4 📺 channels I find this a nostalgic post. 😃
Ann Curry and Jane Pauley were dumped by NBC execs. Big mistakes.
Jane had a good run...1976-1989. Respectable number of years. It speaks for itself. Deb didn't last more than 12 months. BTW she hated when Bryant called her Deb. Totally miscast for this show from the start.
That's why she is on Inside Edition.
Deborah lasted 13 months. Katie replaced her unoficially then and became permanent in April.
Brooke how do you know she hated Bryant calling her Deb? Did you actually hear her say that or was it second handed gossip?🤫🤔
Tom Brokow tried to get Deborah Norville on the show. Think something was going on there. It was a scandal and then they got rid of her and brought on Katie. Katie got lucky that all that was chaos was going on. I think Tom Brokaw pushed Jane Pauley off the show because he wanted Deborah Norville on the show. I think he was hoping for some hanky panky. I know he wasn't on the show at the time but he had a lot of power at NBC.
@@michaelnelson1128 Someone said it in an interview close to the show. It may have been Bryant himself.
These people were professionals, and they reported “the news”.
Deborah was just a bad fit for Today. She’s a great journalist in her own right, but the Today Show was out of her league. She’s had a good career after Today and is still has a big presence as host of Inside Edition. Katie Couric came along about a year after this and saved Today and took it to new heights.
Now why couldn't they be this classy for Ann Curry's departure? Be upfront at the top of the half-hour, acknowledge the public hubbub, and keep it civil and grateful, not just shove it at the bottom of the show preceded by two hours of awkward transitions forbidden to mention the elephant in the room.
Damn Bryant couldn't Jane make the announcement about her future on her own? She didn't get to speak about her departure until Bryant opened up and shit everywhere
I was three weeks short of nine years of age when this came out.
Poor Deborah does not know what lies ahead for her. Only lasts a few short months. The audience just doesn't buy it. Or her.
But Jane did.
She was a bag fit for the show. She wasn’t ready for it and the audience wasn’t ready for her. She was resented by the viewers because they felt that she’d pushed Jane out. Bryant couldn’t carry the show without Jane on his own. Bryant met his match when Katie came along, she took the show to it’s highest ratings ever.
lol She lasted just over a year.
@@jkminnich Katie really saved that show, I remember it well
Dumbest move in Today Show history prior to the ousting of Ann Curry. GMA became the #1 morning show for the first time ever as a result and held it for 6 years.
My kid sister is with NBC in NYC since 1984 and I can asssure you, what I stated is fact. Have a nice day there sweetie.
I'm wondering what it is that you said that I don't see here .
She was wrong. All wrong. Stupid people that were duped by her looks. I knew at the time there was no reason to replace Jane. Jane was a perfect fit for that show. This is a big act. Deborah lasted only a few months.
They all say they leave for their family and it's bullshit.
no, you're bullshit
Its amazing how these anchors have no control of their shows. Its all the executives who make the mistakes and these guys in front of the camera have to suffer mostly for these mistakes. I can't imagine being Jane and all of a sudden a young blond is sitting next to you every day. Horrible management and the viewers hated "Deb". Bryant was barely watchable even with the lovely Jane. After she was dumped, the viewers ran. They are lucky they got Katie eventually.
This aired the day before my 16th birthday
11 days after my 16th biryhday
Good question; I really couldn't answer that, because to be honest, I never watched the "Today" show when either Jane Pauley or Deborah Norville were on the show, and rarely, if ever, did I watch the show when Katie Couric was on. If I was off from school and had a chance to watch TV, I usually had it on cartoons or was outside playing, so as I said, I didn't watch the "Today" show much, if ever.
i miss you jane you are the best .
Worst decision NBC ever made regarding The Today Show, next being giving Ann Curry the job after Meredith left in the first place. Ann only got the job because her contract stipulated she be given the job if Meredith left, since she had already been passed over when Katie left. Ann was a great news anchor and international correspondent, a horrible morning show host. She was great at hard news, horrible with celebrities, cooking, lifestyle segments, etc. You have to be able to do everything to host a morning show.
The problem with Deborah is that she was paired with Bryant. They are both coolish, uptight, and/or prickly personalities and they didn’t complement each other. That’s why Bryant paired well with Jane and Katie. If Deborah had been paired with a more laidback cohost, I think she would have been more successful in the role.
I do think it was time for Jane to move on. I think after someone has been a show like this for 10 years, we get tired of them. I thought Katie was great on the show, but by the mid 2000s, you could see that she was bored and it was time for her to move on.
Bryant-OJ's 3rd victim. He insisted on interviewing OJ-the brass said it would go to Katie-Bryant threatened to quit-and being a man of his word he quit. And we ended up with that idiot Matt Laurer. The brass blew it.
Wait a minute..are u saying the NBC Brass dropped the ball??? Riducu...hey,where's Letterman?????
She is so pretty
Katie was a good replacement though and helped revive their ratings.
Can’t believe how young Deborah Norville looks here
Quite a story of Jane pauley and Barbara Walters first female anchors
Jane is 39 here yet comes across as 50 something. Very attractive but just her demeanour, hair, voice, look etc .makes her look way older. Deborah is only 8 yrs younger yet looks like she could be her daughter! Lol .
Jane was 25 when she joined Today in 1976, and had poise beyond her years even then. She never made the program all about her, unlike a lot of the hosts since.
Yes.
Deborah Norville was the wrong choice to replace Jane Pauley.
Hard to believe now, that they broadcast all this smultz. After Eight.
You do know though this is all an ACT.
The blonde says UM a lot!!!
Poor Deborah Norville. I guess she wasn't perky enough.
Jane looks great here. This move for Deborah ruined her career unfortunately. She was great delivering the news but that was her wonderful talent. She should have stayed in that arena.

She's been drawing a paycheck for 20 years. I would hardly call hosting a 3rd rate syndicated tabloid show where all she does is recite boilerplate intros and teases for a total of about 5 minutes of screen time each episode "doing fine". It's not like she does anything else.

Her career isn't ruined. She's hosting Inside Edition (and has been for over 25 years).
I wonder why viewers were more accepting of Katie Couric then Deborah Norville? Is it in part because Katie seemed more approachable and girl-next-door like when compared to the more glamorous, beauty queen like Deborah?
The Lois Lane trying to find her Superman. Deborah was Supergirl. Maybe if you put a nerdy guy next to her or keep Jane with her and replace Bryant. But he had too much experience. Two superheroes can’t stay together.
I remember years ago when Katie Couric was dating that singer I can't think of his first name Buble. She joked and made a comment about some expensive piece of jewelry she wanted ... I forget if it was worth 20 thousand or two hundred thousand... but anyway he could not hide how irritated he was with her... it was weird and awkward to see that on the news program
I had the privilege of seeing the Today Show live in Atlanta once. She was the same on and off the air. Bryant Gumble was very arrogant.
Jane look the same all these years later.
Talk about the long goodbye
😂
What a mess that was.
I think Deborah looks sexier NOW.

Great hair Jane.....Jesus. ..
That fake sun logo behind these three is a scream. So corny looking.
I wonder how many Kools' that Jane put down to do this.
Davan Mani idk but damn she was a fox here bet her n Bryant got it on a lot
+Mike Ingersoll she looked to me and this why I love her to death due to her honesty. She would hit on athletes in their 20's. She had a rep. of being a bad interviewer (Margaret Trudeau) but when it came to young jocks, she was her Sunday's best. A cougar.
They were good friends. He always liked Jane.
@@mikeingersoll4466I think she liked Greg better. They both worked at WMAQ.
Deborah norville didn't last long at all did she wasn't very long before she ended up on entertainment tonight
Inside Edition
Zzzzzzzzz.....enough touching and eulogizing.
Reassuring credible decent voice. She should have stayed.
What's up with Jane Pauley's hair? Something crawled up there and died.
Kevin Cody she's an ugly bitch
+Kevin Cody Like a squirrel. That was a common look for female hair in that era. It was an odd look.
+Kevin Cody It has a punk rock look.
+Kevin Cody I loved her on the show but never thought she was super good looking. Average.
i never understood her hair style. Really short at the top and then long. No middle layers to blend it in better or making it flow better.
Katie was a good news anchor, though cosmetically , I didn't like her smile. Savannah is a turn off replacement choice because it seems they were trying to copycat a Katie look alike, ....no originality at all.......none whatsoever........
you're very stupid.
Yes, you are. Savannah is the best thing that’s happened to the “Today Show” since Jane Pauley.
