I am really shocked someone has not just beat the sh1t out of Geoff. The dude is a TOTAL FRAUD. 90% of his subscribers PLUS are purchased junk. he buys enormous amounts of JUNk views every video. The guy needs taught a "Life Lesson" with some "Fists"
Collectibles are about "collecting" great memories from the past. The best ones spawn from great moments/eras in sports, or great TV shows/games we remember as kids. These manufactured "collectibles" will be lucky if they hold half the value of a beanie baby.
Glad you made this video. I been saying this since the craze where people we're literally fighting at Walmart to get blaster boxes. I stopped going out looking for boxe and packs, I just buy singles easier and cheaper. But it's all hobbies. I dabble in coins, cards and toys , it's everywhere
Agree completely... when these guys try to release their own products, the first thing I think of is the Carly Simon song, " You're so vain". These guys think the hobby is about them.
One of my favorite pieces of memorabilia is a pair of Mork’s suspenders with all his buttons they gave to the TV executives after picking up the new show Mork and Mindy.
Love the passion. With The National back in Chicago we will all have to walk through the bazzarro carnies screaming in the Breakers Pavilion to get from one side of the show to the other. Unless you are a team collector participating in breaks where you buy your favorite team - those participating are going to feel taken advantage of and RUN away from the hobby. I am sure the ghost dolls will collect dust somewhere.
Big ones being a 2000 bowman Brady PSA 9 for 1000 (had $100 into it) and a 2001 spx Pujols auto PSA 8 for 950 (had 450).. others included a 1975 Topps Joe Thiesmann PSA 9 for 275 (60 into it), 1997 Philly Adam Viniteri PSA 10 for 250 (80 into it) and mostly modern crap that I’m not married to.
Great video. First time seeing a video from you. Instant subscribe. It is so wild in the hobby right now. I just started collecting baseball cards. Like, literally 2 months ago. And I watch all of the Whatnot breaks and stuff and people are nuts! Countless $5-10k product breaks some even up to $20k worth of product that people are paying $600+ per seat in the break. $600+ for a lottery ticket? Not to mention dropping hundreds just to pull the White Sox, Rockies, or Marlins as your team. Even if you get a 1/1 auto from one of those teams, you still aren’t making back your $600. And they happen all day long…And now, Fanatics is forcing some shrinkflation on us by reducing retail options in their products and also reducing the total cards in return you get for buying any retail. There is no room for small collectors anymore. And Fanatics doesn’t care. They love that they can charge whatever they want for any product because breakers are going to buy up all of the stock and let them run the hobby market. Despicable. You are totally correct. The hobby is going to just turn into a singles market completely removing any chance for the small collector to ever own a rare card.
Half the singles market is propped up because of the things you mentioned (repacks, hype chasing etc). Lots of artificial liquidity in cards and collectables.
24 Topps Update is up to $40 for blasters and $30 for hangers. For a flagship product? Those are chrome prices. Is it because of breakers? I think so but am not 100% sure. I DO know it's stupid, and Im not playing the game. They are down 80k this year from me not buying new product. I've shifted to vintage. Everything is so lame now, the prices of 99% of this new crap goes to nothing within a month. Went to list another Elly Chrome Refractor. Sold 2 for $50, imagine my surprise to see they go for $15 now. Sigh. Can we get a market correction please?
The market will get worse. Too much hype on the baseball rookie class and the paper product ain't worth the price they're asking. lots of trash out there
Agree with you on this. Geoff and Josh - two guys who buy their way into the hobby and really don’t know anything about it, other than to capitalize on unsuspecting folks who know less than them. The hype machines are alive and well.
False scarcity is such a horrible method of creating collectables. This idea that there's all these 1/1 cards out there, but they look the same as the base cards with different colour... I just don't see how anyone wants this stuff in 10 years. Every player gets 20 1/1 cards that aren't really unique at all...
The waves of individuals buying into breaks or falling for these new cash crabs will eventually start cresting at lower levels until there is no one left to play the lotto. You said it, single buyers are going to grow or people will just leave. This is impossible to sustain but I think Topps is not looking at long term collectors but a quick cash grab.
I try to keep it positive. But I agree with you 100 percent. However, if you manage to pull off an ALF-Sports Card Dad product line, I am all the way in, Dude. Haha. Be well
I agree that trying to manufacture "collectibles" just doesn't work. Like you said, it has to happen organically. Anything that says collectible, limited edition etc etc are almost assuredly not going to end up being collectible. I also agree with you that these figures are likely a terrible idea. I guess I would have a couple pushbacks. First of all, I'm not a fan of VeeFriends cards either but I wouldn't call them "stupid". A decent number of people seem to like them, who are you to say they're stupid? I couldn't tell you Venusaur from Bulbasaur but I LOVE the Pokemon hobby, why? Because SO many people are in love with those cute little characters and get so much joy from collecting them. If some people feel the same way about VeeFriends than I think that's fantastic. Also, your comment that he's a "one hit wonder" and therefor "people thinks he knows stuff". StockX was SO huge that it would be more unreasonable if people didn't have faith in him given the success of StockX. Yes, one brilliant idea doesn't make an individual brilliant but I'd probably rather bet on someone who has a brilliant idea that was executed over someone who doesn't have that history. Bill Gates was a "one hit wonder."
You make the joke about making your own line of toys but there is a group of wrestling card collectors that make card sets of their group...it is honestly one of the most pathetic things I have seen. Great video and thanks for watching the interview so I don't have to. Not all heroes wear capes!
Yeah I never bought into VeeFriends. Though Gary always touts it as his “Disney IP,” it’s very obvious that the value of those cards and other items is literally among him, his buddies and anyone else trying to prop it up. VeeFriends is Gary’s greatest testament to his ego outside of him trying to buy the Jets.
You are right that first comes the show, movie, or sport that we love, then comes the related collectibles from that … You cannot create collectibles of something with no background like vee cards, this is a little different with the ghost things but it’s SUPER GRIFTY/SKETCHY & JUST WEIRD to make your own Wooden Voodoo dolls of random popular ppl, & then to number them?
Isn't it obvious that these guys are just in it for the money? The sports card investor clown along with other influencers are a part of the problem of why the hobby is the way it is nowadays. I had been out of the hobby for years and when I got back into it two years ago it was so different that I started questioning if I had made the right choice by collecting again! All I simply do now is buy what I want for my PC and break on occasion for the fun but will never pay ridiculous amounts of money I don't even have. It amazes me sometimes how these guys have a huge following.
No worse than these idiot influencers going nuts over the topps unlicensed football and basketball stuff saying it's the greatest thing on earth and charging ridiculous prices.....Yet Leaf has been making better card designs than both companies and gives out some pretty decent autos in a box for a decent price imo. I can't stand those guys.
