I remember as a hitter in highschool i used to do a lot of meditation before and after games because meditation helped me stay focused during an AB. Hitters should try that. I never once called for a time out during my 4 years playing in HS and pitchers hated that. I always thought "I'm going to beat pitchers at their own game, i can wait as long as they can". One pitcher told me that it had a reverse effect on him where he thought I would call time and then would get distracted by waiting for me to call it but i never did.
Good psychology there, can't ever underestimate the brain. If one person can do it, the other side just needs to adapt. 🤘
I used to meditate DURING the at bat. Probably why I batted .142.
When MLB made the rule, it probably didn't even consider pitchers doing this. Great pitchers will find ways to make batters uncomfortable in the box regardless of the rules.
100 percent. Elite pitchers don’t need a long time to get ready. they can be on go mode and be successful.
They'll just modify the rule. Once the batter is in the box, the pitch clock will drop to 5 seconds.
This is how pitchers used to work when it was deemed acceptable for pitchers to plunk batters for stalling the next pitch. MLB is finally stepping in and enforcing the unspoken rule of the past, so we can get back to a game that was more about quick-thinking and reacting.
Let's not pretend batters weren't calling timeout mid throw to screw with the pitcher. It comes full circle.
@@thedarkemissary That's on the umpires then. Just because a batter calls timeout, it doesn't mean it must be granted.
I love how max is like the crazy uncle😂 but he’s also a big league pitcher… such a funny combo
I'm really interested to see the similar dynamic that will play out between pitchers and baserunners due to the pickoff limit. Savvy runners will be testing to see how far they can push the limits, trying to push pitchers into using their pickoff attempts. Can runners take an extra step before any pickoffs? After one? How much value will pitchers attach to keeping both pickoff attempts available? Keeping just the second one?
There will be some crazy moments this year as everyone adjusts, especially during the first couple of months, but it will be *fun* to watch.
I'm just hoping the strategy won't be 3-5 minutes per AB of runners goading the pitcher into wasting their pickoff attempts. That will be a chore to watch and arguably hurts the pace of play way more, now that runners will try to do this in order to guarantee a steal.
I think more people would be interested in baseball if they understood the “cat and mouse game” that goes on every at bat and the dynamics it produces. A world class pitcher like Scherzer knows how to work batters and make them uncomfortable to make mistakes.
the problem is like many cat and mouse games it isnt interesting to watch.
Like imagine a world where players could do whatever they want during a shootout in hockey/soccer (And to some degree they were trying to do that at one point and the NHL had to step in and make a rule that if your forward momentum stopped the play was dead)
That's also a cat and mouse game... how long will the goalie stay frozen without committing in any direction before the player has to shoot, can the goalie get the player to shoot by creating a perceived movement in a direction his body isnt committed to going, can the player use enough dekes to make the last deke look like a commitment to force the goalie out of the shooting lane.
At high speed its exciting to watch.
But if the shooter had infinite time it would get very boring when you have the best in the craft.
UFC has a similar problem. The cat and mouse game when youre talking about high class strikers and ground game specialists results in a bunch of fights where they make dozens of feints and mini jabs at each other but no real commitment to an attack. For a martial arts purist who appreciates the mental game its interesting to see the multitude of subtle ways they attempt to influence an opening.
But for casual fans its a boring experience where most of the fight is spent in the center of the cage feigning attacks or on the edges of the cage in the clinch with very little being done aside from halfhearted foot stomps and the occasional shot to the abs.
While I am a bit skeptical about this move as it'll negatively impact certain players who likely will Ricky Romero themselves out of their day job given how badly this'll mess with their superstitious routines its ultimately a good move as the same mental games will still take place but with the added tension of a time clock. The final blow has to happen at some point and with every second that ticks off the greater the tension becomes.

More people may be interested... but it won't be your average passing American fan (the baseball die hards will get it though). The passing fan doesn't have the smarts or patience. They just want to see more home runs! 🙄
Non-US fans who grew up watching inherently more strategic bat and ball games might get the 'pacing' changes better.
@@gavinhawdon193 I don’t think the “passing fans” want more home runs besides kids. I think more people that used to like baseball are getting away from it because it’s just a big number nerd soup. Data is the only thing that matters now. RPM, exit velo, launch angles, everyone swings for the fences. There’s so much less unique play from team to team. Contact hitters might as well be a thing of the past. I played baseball and watched for a long time, and I know a lot of people think that baseball isn’t interesting anymore specifically because everyone plays the same strategies and swing for the fences
Edit: can’t forget no more stolen bases because the data says nope
People nowadays don’t have the patience nor the wherewithal to understand the chess game going on every pitch. Hell they cant even understand actual chess lol
Love the new pitching rules. Went to spring training game that only lasted 2.5 hours. The game never started to drag.
Wait until you watch on TV. You will come back from a break and the SECOND batter will have a 2-1 count! TV isn't going to reduce ads!

What a brilliant analytical mind. I feel like people don't usually think of Max in that way, but he's very meticulous.
If a batter steps out, does the clock start again with the full time once he steps back in? It wasn’t made clear in the video. Thanks.
Thinking of which direction to walk when climbing the mound is awesome. Regardless of if it works.
Man this Scherzer fella looks smart. Hopefully he can make a good career. Good luck young man!
I can't wait for more and more pitchers to abuse grey areas like this. MLB thinks that pitch clock will work a certain way and influence the game in a certain way and I am all about players abusing it in ways MLB didn't think of. Hopefully that will result in more rule changes that will really lock-in the future of baseball.
Looks like the clock is still doing exactly what they wanted it to do tho

@@Luke_Groundwalker Metaphorically*
The 8 second point was added due to College hitters waiting to the last second to be ready, giving the pitcher no time to start a windup. The 8 second point has switched that dynamic, not fixed it. Now hitters are going to be manically worried about the clock (a strike is a MUCH bigger penalty to a hitter than a ball is to a pitcher), unable to get any timing going at all, then frozen in place by pitchers.
The strike penalty needs to be removed. Instead, allow the pitcher to throw at 6 seconds whether the batter is ready or not. The pitcher has the ball, the pitcher dictates when the pitch is ready to be thrown. The batter has no power over any of that. Yes, make a point where the batter has to be ready, but don't penalize him for it. Just allow the pitcher to start his delivery whether the batter is ready or not.
This was exactly my thought as well, but I think it's in the interest of player safety. You can't have a guy throwing a rock 90 mph at a guy that isn't looking.

Also you can't expect the ump to call balls and strikes on pitches thrown when the batter isn't in the box yet.
He doesn’t play for my team but I love this guy!
A true intutive mind looking for every strategic advantage he can get!
Games used to take 2.5 hours because hitters used to put the ball into play, not taking a combined 25 strikeouts, which is about 125 pitches where nothing happens. Making more rules that will be taken advantage of and confusing just makes the game worse.
there also were 10 pitching changes a game, guys taking forever to get in the box and guys taking forever to pitch. pitch clock was much needed.
its funny to think a sports ball game could get any worse....they should let ladies play to make the game better
Baseball is longer because relievers take 5000 years to throw a pitch and now theres more reliever substitutions than ever.
What about runners? Will steals and hit and run tick up considerably?
He is probably the closest pitcher we have to Greg Madux these days. I loved watching Mad Dog pitch, since my Braves have had to face Max so much he is not a favorite. I do respect him though. Damn good pitcher.
Max wants to be the best by any means necessary. If he has to play mind games using the pitch clock then go for it. It's not an unfair advantage. It's strategy. Outsmarting the system or opponent is fair game.
I love Max and he is a character but I had it explained to me this way once.... The some total of all "gamesmanship" has about a 1% impact on the outcome of an AB. Therefore If you spend more than 1% of your time preparing on such things, you are actually decreasing your ability to be successful during a game. I believe this was said originally by Dave Righetti and echo by Greg Maddux.
Got to Love Mad Max!!
I might start following baseball again since '94.
Yeah where was all that pitching experience during the post season 😂 at then
None of this would be necessary if the batter just stepped in ready to hit and the pitcher was ready to pitch. I know. It sounds ridiculous these days but it worked really nice in ye olden days. Players just got spoiled into doing whatever they wanted and the umps let them.
That last guy wasn't even looking up , but he was in the clock and box, lol awesome , hope they don't pay him a lot to hit
I thought the point of the pitch clock was to speed up the game. Brilliant that it's doing the opposite.
I needed more of baseball UA-cam. So happy to find this
Cat and mouse is exactly why I love baseball. People say it's boring buy the mind games are so great in this sport. Baseball rocks!
I’m so happy it’s Pitching Ninja season already!
There's nothing to stop a batter from taking more time to get into the box, giving the pitcher less time to play cat-and-mouse. It should be interesting to see the adjustments back and forth during the course of this season.
Yeah, there is actually. The batter has to be in the box before the countdown reaches 8.
@@keith6706 Which leaves only 7 seconds with no one on base. Not really a lot of time to get into a batter's head.
@@srellison561 7 seconds is a long ass time to be staring into another grown mans eyes infront of 30k people. Time certainly slows down lol
when a batter calls time does the pitch clock reset? Can the pitcher step off the rubber, does the clock reset then?
3:07 doesn't look like it should be allowed. He's well into his pitching motion before the batter looks up. Is that really within the rules?
They made this rule to speed up the game but if batters get freezes out in the box cause pitchers hold their stance a little longer scoring will go down and make the game less exciting. I don’t think MLB considered all all angles of the rule change. Unintended consequences allow smart players to exploit the loopholes.
Which is fine imo, pitchers abused the substance rules for years. Batters were given too much power to dictate at bats until this year. They could call time and step in and out as much as they wanted
I think there's also a potential to incentivize contact again, though. If hitters are having trouble due to not being able to dictate the pace of the game anymore it should incentivize them to focus more on getting the bat on the ball than hitting it over the fence. It's really hard to project these kinds of things.
Their goal is not to increase scoring. More scoring has not made the game more exciting and less scoring in itself will not make it less exciting. Their goal is to make the game go faster and then to get the ball in play more.

This has already made me somewhat more interested in watching baseball again after I’ve completely given up watching it
People saying the MLB didnt expect this- do you think they just got their GEDs last week? Cmon
MIssed out on some great footage from today
My prediction is its gonna help the hitters the first couple of years with the rule changes.. and after a couple years the pitchers will adjust back to the same old 1-2 score ballgames.. the days of Sosa-Maguire are gone unless they decide to regulate TRT
Another "unintended consequence" that people predicted would happen when these changes were published. A further strategy by runners will be goading the pitcher into wasting his pick offs so they can near guarantee a steal - more time wasted. So now instead of normal pitcher/hitter dynamic, we have minimum 14 or so seconds per pitch (and more likely 28) - 14 standing there till time out, another 10-15 to come set and back in the box, and another 14 to make the hitter wait and sweat. So now we're back at square one. The rule change we really NEEDED was the ball/strike challenge system to crack down on trash ump calls - not these 'pace of play' rules attempting to appeal to the tiktok attention span and will just be gamed anyways.
This make me wonder how a pitcher with a herky/jerky rocking motion like Louis Garcia will adjust?
So the batter just waits until just before 8 seconds to be ready. The most they will have to wait is 8 seconds
I'm a HUGE Max Scherzer fan, but as a Braves team fan, hitters will get used to his game because of the clock. This shit goes both ways. He's just slightly better than 50/50 against the Braves and since the new clock is against both the pitcher and the hitter, they'll figure it out. Time will tell the tale, but that's my side of the story.
Love that guy
Doing it on his former team. Shows that he’s going to have fun with this new rule LOL
Doug Fister was a "grip it and rip it" pitcher who did not take much time between pitches. He certainly didn't need a pitch clock to tell him when to throw the ball.
man i miss doug fister, was sad to see him go to detroit.
As it should be. The pitch-clock will force out the throwers that can’t think on their feet (and need the catcher to do it for them) and will reward pitchers who actually know how to pitch. Pitching =/= throwing.
Time to go on fanduel and drop some money on Max winning the Cy young this year 😂
How does the new rule help the game exactly?
The pitch clock may need tweaking, but I watched a full televised game on Saturday without wanting to switch off over the endless delays between pitches.
Not a mets fan actually a yankees fan but am very excited to watch their bullpen this year gonna be real interesting
Respect. I’m not a Yankees fan, per se, but I will happily acknowledge all the great players who have passed through their ranks.
There are a lot of pitchers that work quick that are rally going to have a good year with this pitch clock rule. Not sure this is going to help baseball as a whole though, maybe we should raise the mound back up too.
After Max goes out first time w pitch clock, uses unknown/savvy ways to mess w batters showing advantages. Pitching Ninja: I really think Max is going to use clock to his advantage
The guy really is a TERMINATOR.
I would not want to be the mouse that Scherzer is hunting
Love this pitcher!! :))
I was even talking to the wife about this EXACT thing...I told her I wondered if some pitchers would purposely stand there for the whole clock just to mess with batters. Looks like I was right.
Further proof that this clock garbage is stupid.
Baseball is somewhat of a "complex system" and when you change multiple variables in such a system you have NO IDEA what to expect next. This season could turn out to be an absolute travesty and worse than the Covid pandemic shortened season. We may see guys steal 2nd and 3rd every time they hit a single or walk. We may see typically .300 hitters hitting .100 in August. Playoff series could be ended and decided by balls/strikes called due to pitch clock violations. We are really messing with America's pastime and potentially rendering it utterly corrupted and different forever.
Why was that last pitch allowed? 3:07
I don't care for the shortening of the games, but I love the little meta games that have been introduced as a result of the pitch clock. Seeing guys like Scherzer and Stro play around with new ideas is cool.
I don't understand how there can be "outrageously long holds" that last as long as he wants them to. They can only last until the pitch clock runs down, right? Isn't that the point of having the pitch clock?
This video about pitch clock strategy basically seems to forget that the pitch clock exists.
Max is about to dominate so hard they'll have to give him the AL *and* NL Cy Young.
his eyes tripped me out for a sec
I never noticed his eye coloring before. As a batter that would freak me out more than anything. Bionic eyes.
Easy way to stop him from holding,
1 you can not hold for more the. 10 secs once the hitter is set
2 if the pitcher hold for more then 15 secs batter can call time..
Personally as a MLB fan since the 1960s I think the pitch clock is dumb. We go to relax. We go to enjoy and enjoy the rhythm of the game. If it’s a pitching duel and last 2 hrs or a slugfest that is 5 hrs we enjoy it. The pitch clock is for the fly by night fans. Doubt we go to a game this yearwe already cancelled our Direct Tv programming to watch baseball or hockey.
When the guy who wins the batting championship with an average of .245 takes place MLB might re-think this nonsense.
Before they make rule changes like this, they need to sit down with a guy like, say Greg Maddux for example, and ask him what he would do. If there is an opening, someone like Scherzer is going to walk through it.
Love this guy

This will be negated by an ‘umpire discretionary timeout’ at some point. The quick pitch may be a potential safety hazard that will need to be played out.

Yeah I was expecting something like this to happen. Will be interesting to see the counter the hitters will come up with.
With no runners on the batter can make the pitcher wait up to 8 seconds before he can throw. With the 15 second clock, the batter can confine the pitch to a 7 second window. I’m certain a lot of pitchers won’t like the batter having that much control over timing of the pitch.
Well, it's up to individual athletes in every sport to adjust to changes in the rules
How come i have a feeling this is going to turn into that something similar to nascar when they introduced the aero package that turned the daytona race and others that season into a freight train, an idea that looks good on paper and works in the minor leagues but when turned loose on the pros it backfires.

It's already been tested in over 8000 minor league games. Supposedly, it not only speeds up the game, but increases the number of hits, walks, and stolen bases, and decreases the number of strikeouts.
Okay but the pitcher can’t just hold the ball for an unlimited amount of time so this is misleading. He has to be in motion toward home plate before the clock runs out.
I know the pitch clock is needed for baseball to be successful in today's society, but it still bothers. With this new mechanic, is it a different game? Can you still compare new stats to stats from before the clock? That reluctance or stubbornness to change the game is actually the most endearing quality about the game - imo anyway. I mean for a very long time the biggest change was when they changed the mound after 1968 when Bob Gibson pitched the best season ever. Is it fair to compare seasons that came after that to Bob Gibson's performance? Nope. I saw the Orioles and pirates do an extra half inning with no umps. That was very fast, and I think it would still be fair to compare stats from the past. Why can't they just do that? Get rid of the umps to speed things up. Don't add an entirely new mechanic to the game.
And it completely destroys the whole purpose of it. 😂
I figure only a few guys will really be able to get exploited like this. Plus pitchers generally have control of the pace of the AB anyway since they decide when to pitch. If you can wait 20 seconds for a pitch then this is redundant.
hahaha, he balked and had a pitch clock violation today. So, maybe it is backfiring on him. Lesson learned prior to the season though.

@@EpicVideoMaster11 So let's just add a ton of dead time into every sport to increase personality of the players then. FOH. I think since it's a new rule it will be an advantage to pitchers that use it but over time batters will become accustomed and find their own advantages. The clock creates a defined box to work in so both pitchers and batters will find ways to create their own advantages.
That's what I think is so cool. Pitcher in a groove? Call time to throw him off. Hitter foul off 3 pitches in a row? Hold it as long as possible.
I love that the pitch clock rule was implemented to speed up the game. But I'm sure Manfred didn't think how pitchers and batters would work the rule to gain advantages. The players always find a way. 2023 is going to be an interesting season.
Rob,
What are the specific rules for pickoff's under the new pitch clock rule?
A potential disadvantage would be that runners can time steals off the pitch clock if there is a pickoff limit.
That’s a great point. Although that’s only if the pitcher decides to use the whole clock, which in turn would incentivize pitchers to not use the whole clock.
