I watched this film recently on Netflix. I have read the biography of Stalin and the events after his death. Although a thoroughly entertaining satirical comment, and putting aside typical poetic licence, it was pretty accurate to events. However I found the dialogue between the characters so riveting and absorbing that I watched the movie 4 times in the course of a week. Never come close to this before. Incredibly well composed and acted.
Were the events after his death included in the biography or was it a separate book? I personally enjoyed the movie as satire but I'd be overjoyed if it turns out it was close to reality
Well according to multiple accounts there're multiple factual errors within this movie. Some very common misconceptions. Like I saw a clip indicating that the great marshal Tukhachevsky's death was somehow work of Beria too. It's not, it's more like his predecessor at NKVD, Yezhov, who almost killed Beria too, but eventually got arrested and executed by Beria.

This movie is hilarious, but it's also creatively brilliant. "Let's do a British comedy about the aftermath of Stalin's death in Russia" is such weird idea for a movie, but damn if it didn't work brilliantly.

As someone who grew up in the USSR, I think it is absolutely the best and the most righteous representation of those political clowns in history. Remembering them with fear is too much of an honor for them because for some it might border a wicked admiration. All the UK had been able to do was hold the line. Had Germany not opened up the eastern front, the troops and equipment available to defend the territories they took in the west would have at the very least, made the war drag on for many more years at a cost of millions more deaths and potentially given them enough time to develop their own nuke, and had Stalin have sided with the Axis in such a scenario, the results would have been unthinkable. The west owes a giant debt to the people of Russia. A debt it barely speaks of nor rarely admits to.

If you've seen the movie yet. The joke is pulled up several times. He looks young and they're pissing on him for it saying he can't possibly be a good doctor cause he's so young. First he claims his age is 20 something and they mock him for that. Then he tries 30+ and they scoff. And then finally that furious son comes barging in asking his age and he just replies "I'm old" which is just absolutely hilariously brilliant. Such a well built up joke.
This trailer portrays the movie as slapstick comedy but it is actually much smarter than that. It is in fact a very well written and very well acted black comedy that has a very real suspense in the air right up to the end. It is only based on truth as some scenes really happened and others are altered for cinematic convenience but overall its a brilliant movie. Just watch out for Jason Isaacs as the no nonsense Georgy Zhukov. so bloody funny
This is like the spiritual successor to Dr. Strangelove. I can't think of any other films that have had the balls to see the humor in desperately insane, historical times.

This is one of the most underrated (comedy) movies ever. I've seen it plenty times over the years, and still giggling on some scenes like a little girl. Steve Buschemi and Jason Isaacs did an EXTRAORDINARY good job in this film. As a Millenial, I didn't even know that Steve Buschemi was such a great actor.
The music in this is movie amazing and completely underrated each piece feels like what it's titled about Like "staging a coup" sounds like chaos and "back from the gulag" sounds weak and miserable
Yup. Great call. No show out there has a group of writers with the same comedy genes as Veep. They don't rely on cringe or pop culture references or just straight up cuss words. They put their minds into their jokes man.

Everyone, watch this, for so many reasons. The dialogue; it assumes you are a thinking person, it's funny and brutally graphic, and somehow that works. You will feel smarter about current events after you watch this.
They're making one that's about Cheney but Bush is gonna be a significant part of it, I'd assume. It's being directed and written by Adam McKay, with Christian Bale playing Cheney and Sam Rockwell playing Bush. It's called Backseat.
Now *this* one's really hilarious, and the word choices they elected to show are far better! To quote one of them "*You're* the good guy now?! You killed half the nation!"... yep, that's them. They had a serious meltdown in this set of events!
That Steve Buscemi didn't even attempt to hide his New York accent made this film so much funnier. Loved every minute of it.
Jason Isaacs exaggerated his cockney accent even more for this and somehow it worked

That's the best part. The Trailer only shows very broad comedy while the actual movie has so many golden moments that it's difficult to even describe.

Everyone, watch this, for so many reasons. The dialogue; it assumes you are a thinking person, it's funny and brutally graphic, and somehow that works. You will feel smarter about current events after you watch this.

They're making one that's about Cheney but Bush is gonna be a significant part of it, I'd assume. It's being directed and written by Adam McKay, with Christian Bale playing Cheney and Sam Rockwell playing Bush. It's called Backseat.
