    The opium poppy is one of the oldest known plants to be cultivated by humans. The ancient Sumarians called it the "joy plant" for its psychoactive effects. Here I show you my little opium poppies. In the next video I will show you them transplanted into my garden.

      @King Croc I am not referring to aging individualpeople but populations that live the longest. Have you heard of a country called Monaco? Monaco is inhabited with billionaires and multi-multi-millions from all over the world. Google and learn. They country has the highest disposable income in the WORLD and the highest life expectancy. They average age for a.woman is 93.3 and men is 85.4. No other country comes even close. The popukation of Monaco is from all over the world, so e càn exclude good DNA. The poorest countries in the world live on average to the mid-50s. Still think there's no correlation and I'm making stuff up? I'm guessing you are a younger person... Now you know. Money, health and life span are connected. Again, this isn't looking at person by person as that wouldn't be a large enough sample to draw a conclusion. Instead it is looking at larger populations. Guessing you are young. The correlation between wealth and longevity is a fact.

    Poppy seeds like temps, 50- 65 degrees for germination and can be very slow if it is hot. All varieties of papaver somniferum seeds germinate at different times. With some varieties you may see seedlings in as little as 3 days. Others can take up to a month.
    They don't have that low of a germination rate, they just don't all germinate at the same time.
    Sow on the surface of the soil, or barely cover seeds. Thin to a minimum of 15cm (6″) apart. Poppies are easy to grow and the self-sow with abandon, without becoming weedy. Simply pull up unwanted plants (an easy task) before they bloom, or better yet, let them tell you where they want to grow.

    Some more tips...
    scatter a lot of seeds in small areas. they start very fast and lean on each other and crawl along the ground at first and can be damaged by watering! Cover them for the first 3 weeks with a transparent plastic to preserve moisture and dont water from above until they are producing leaves. start them outdoors very early covered in patches or large containers. they are very weird plants! Easily shocked and stressed so once started don't try and replant or move them around. once they flower the petals drop in 3-5 days and once that occurs you have a short window of less than 3 days to score the bulbs with razor or sharp electronics tweezers and not too deeply youll see the milky light brown latex immediately once scored and let dry on bulb before gently scraping off. you don't get much per bulb so if you have any intention of commercial level production you will fail unless you have acres of them and its a full time job!

      @@jts12fan as it turned out you were right. I had like 20-30 plants and barely got enough to put a couple of genuine painkilling experiences together but didn't think i had enough of the bulbs to make tea (like two cups of bulbs...) though next time i do this i will since the plants are just SO weird to grow and harvest. I lost the entire first crop to something really minor just a change in moisture and light. They do not like being planted in rows or as single plants, they are like a woven vine crawler which belies the look of the final flower which looks like straight up and down but it's anything but. I just know of no other plant that does what they do in terms of erratic fussiness with environment. It was definitely an experience to try though and i think i at least can say i "know" this thing but we never got past the final handshake i suppose :-)

    I've been growing these things since the 1st of this month. today is the 20th and nothing yet. Temperature has been really cold and freezing when I first got started but now it's getting warm. I water them but someone said maybe I'm water too much but that's not the case. I just make sure they get just the right amount of water to not drown and drain it on the side of my plant pot. I heard they are better to grow in the winter so I'm expecting to see some growth hopefully soon once the weather gets water warmer. I'm growing in doors which seems tougher to do because I notice people who grow them outside just say throw them in soil and let them be but say nothing about watering them..

      Just get one of those Jiffypot Greenhouses from Walmart or Lowes and use that. They're about $10 and you get 72 little pots. Put about 5-10 seeds in each pot. Put in a place that gets decent sunlight. They should germinate in less than a week. Once they get their second set of leaves carefully thin them down to maybe 2 plants per pot and then transfer them to where ever they are going to live outside. This is the most effective way I've found to do it and I've tried several different things over the years.

People say it can't be done but I don't think it's true, it can be done although I think you may have better luck growing outside. The main thing about growing indoors I would say is having plenty of light, like maybe get 4 4ft t5 bulbs, and maybe get up to 6, 3-5gal fabric pots and end up with no more than 2 plants in each of them, if you have the space.

      @domdimensions9219  3 роки тому +4

      Hi eric. I'm not exactly sure, I'm no expert, but I know the poppies will keep growing for about a month after the petals drop. Just keep watering them as normal for a while and you will see the pods will keep growing bigger. You can also give them some plant food if you want at this stage, at your local hardware store you can get some organic flowering food, but just use a very small amount occasionally. Opium poppies don't need much food, and if you overfeed them they will suffer. There's this really good youtube channel called "little poppy mama", which is dedicated mainly to growing opium poppies. I recommend you check that out.

    Poppies are incredibly difficult to transplant....i sow mine where I want them to grow. It's best to have a raised bed. I say this because my soil is compacted and full of rock so if I dig down and remove about 2 feet of hard dirt and replace it with loose sandy soil then they will grow...

I cheat a little using the 8 by 8 by 16 inch concrete block and then top them with a 4 inch solid block... This gives me an additional foot of depth that I don't have to dig that far down with a shovel.. I don't have a garden tiller so doing this all by hand with a wheelbarrow and a lot of 5 gallon buckets that I got for free.....you are dead right about poppies having a tap root almost like a carrot...they sink that into the loose deep soil almost like a ship dropping anchor... .good thing too cause some of those plants can be 6 feet tall....

    • @midclock
      @midclock Рік тому +1

      You must be very gentle, and do it at the right moment or the plant will very likely die.
      I don't know how many weeks after germination, but the best moment in my opinion is when the vegetative phase kicks in... You can recognise it by looking at the leaves : once they start to be saw shaped, it's the the right moment.
      I wouldn't wait too much after this moment, as like the author of the video said, the main root will grow towards the bottom, and there's an high chance of ruining it. I'm not an expert but I can tell you that this plant' weak point is the root system.

      You want to wait about 5 days after the flower petals fall off. When the crown on the top of the seed pod turns upward is another good measuring method. But generally, you don’t want to wait too long. If the seed pod has turned bluish in color, it’s generally too late.

About 1% codeine (methylmorphine) by weight. Obviously can vary a lot based on breed, soil health, weather and location etc.
