Gunning for the PhD??? Fingers crossed for you! 🤞🏼 my gamble is that you’ll like Giovanni’s Room both with its story and psychology as a formative gay text. My favorite Baldwin work!
I am, and thank you, I may need it, PhD positions around here are competitive because they're fully funded and paid a full-time salary, so we shall see how I do. I hope I do enjoy it!!
Glad you are feeling better and that book - Sustainability In An Imagined World sounds intriguing. I've just gotten back into academic texts (back in school) so maybe I'll give it a try.
best of luck in the job/program search!! ✨ I really want to get to some James Baldwin - I have a collection of his poetry and a short nonfiction work I want to get to!
Once more, it's great to catch up with you and I'm pleased to hear your bug has abated for the most part. I'm planning on reading The Death of Vivek Oji, so was pleased to hear your thoughts - especially as your opinion seems to go against what I've heard from other folk and I am most appreciative of that. Good luck with the job and PhD applications. It must be quite an intense thing to be doing at this moment in time. I can't believe it is eight years since The Garden of Evening Mists was considered for the Booker and I still haven't read it. I mention this, because that was around the time I started paying attention to "literary stuff" and a friend of mine told me to read that one above all others. This is the same friend I borrowed Cloud Atlas off in 2011 and still haven't returned her copy. Either way, I hope that you continue to be happy in your reading of the book. (also need to acquire and read Giovanni's Room) (also that is a rather fantastic jumper)
The description.... THE DESCRIPTIOOON xD My favorite comedian you are "I have a humanities degree" well now that was triggering.... xD And yes, I promise I will pick up Edward II Heidegger? Welllllllllllllllllllll............. xD
Haha, well sometimes when I don't know what to write, I just write what comes to my mind haha. Yeah, let's not think too much about our humanities degrees....
edward the second!! i gotta read it. i want to read a shakespeare play this year, so after that i think i'll read a marlowe. had not even considered that, ty! giovanni's room will break your heart, my god.
Definitely recommend it! Which Shakespeare play do you think you'll be reading? I'm excited for the emotional punch of Giovanni's Room... I think. Hahaha
Have you seen the Derek Jarman version of Edward II - it is still on DVD and features quite a few friends of mine who were active in OutRage at the time it was made (early 1990s). There is also a Brecht version of the play too - but I haven't read it.
Ah that's brilliant. I haven't actually yet had a chance to watch any adaptations of it at all, I certainly did feel inspired by the text and have lots of personal imaginaries that I'd like to see explored with the play. Will have to keep my eyes peeled for Brecht's version!

@@mcs-books9075 I really want to read a Midsummer night's dream! It was one of my favourites growing up, and I love Puck's end speech. Super lovely. 💕
@@lyddie465 I can totally understand that!

Jarman has a very gay sensibility and Edward II was a great adaptation.
Can you tell us a little about what you’re hoping to write your PhD thesis on?
Definitely, I will think about when's the best time to talk about them, the three that I've applied for so far are all quite different! Haha
