  • Hello Internet. :)
Huzzah! Finally got all of our analog only radios out of our system and we are ready to switch over to digital. Before, we used PR/XTS1500's, HT1000, MT/MTS2000, and more recently beofengs. This is what we did since they were cheap from surplus and worked for what we needed, including using MDC for additional features. It's now several years later and we need to expand and become more up to date on our technology.
Here comes MotoTrbo with SL300, SL3500e, R2, R7 and a few IONs for our system. Q-SYS can now also be integrated with our radio management, by utilizing interoperability that can be exchanged to trigger special events, paging and announcements, location finding with indoor beacons, restricted area breach notifications and more. The time has finally come to implement all of this and I'm super excited to see it in action!

I recently got my own personal R7 for work, its great. The action menu saves so much time and frees up other programable buttons for other stuff. I am so happy the TRBO line finally has the zone display like they would on an APX, wish the 7550 had that option too.

The ION looks so cool and useful, just completed AFC last week and we had a lot of registration issues the first day of the con with scanning/servers, and combining a radio as a handheld "tablet" would've been so useful to pull up schedules, events, panels, and the convention master website instead of having to use my phone 24/7 to look up stuff lol

Having 2 devices to juggle is not fun, I agree with you! The ION is looking very promising 🤞

really enjoyed the video, yes Motorola radios are good, but they are very expensive and hard to program.

Hey, have You managed to send network ping from iON using LMR? I have feeling there should be access to network stack - I wanted write custom app to transfer data over LMR. Any hints?

Hello. We are still trying to see what the serial commands are that are sent over DMR in order for us to make them usable in other applications. I'm not too technical on that side of things to give you a detailed answer. That's the best I can say on that.
Correction: Our Techs are using SDRSharp, DSD and RTL-SDR as means of decoding data. As far as network pings, all we are doing for network right now is simple wifi for connectivity, and later, location beacons.

@@KevlarStripes Thanks for reply, I think I'm looking for something different that You need, if by any mean Your tech or You manage to play with it - kindly please let me know. Just like You pointed out - amount of people who work with ION is very limited. My story is, over year ago I bought ION with hope of having LTE terminal (that I will use 99,9% of time) but in case network failure i wanted switch to DMR to access my email server. Right now I have it working by sharing BT APN profile from SL4000 and connecting to LEX L10 terminal (if need). I wanted to have single device so skip BT connection and do it from iON. Install email client, set IP address of my other radio station and make ION send data over LMR just like i can do with SL4000 and separated android terminal. Long time ago I recorded video titled "Fujitsu Siemens LOOX Pocket & Motorola DMR Mototrbo radio sending email from Windows Mobile 5 PDA"

Hey there man, got a couple of questions to try to understand these ions compared to all the rest of trbos line. First, I have a business account with Motorola already, where do I get radio central? Is the moto account log in the same for radio central? And is radio central subscription based as in pay to use it? stop paying, can’t program your radios anymore type of thing. Also wideband, is it the same as cps2.0? In the sense of getting wideband entitlement key. And lastly, do the ions have the whole software update management deal too? Meaning after a couple of years it runs out, and you can’t update until you buy more time. Anyways thank you so much for helping me understand if you do have a chance ☺️

Heya! So a business account is the first step. Next, you'll have to give motorola a call and inquire about getting a "Agency" set up. The agency is essentially the business your account is for and will make any radios you purchase for it software locked to your account. It's a big hurtle and motorola is very possessive about who is allowed to have an agency. Since it is all entirely cloud based, including the codeplug, it is subscription based to store your data. I don't know what pricing is as I believe it depends on how much data is needs to be stored. As far as what happens if you stop paying, I'm not entirely sure. I can only speculate that you won't be able to use the service anymore but your radios will be fine. The login credentials would be the same as youll be under that agency, and you can assign other accounts to be "Techs" for the agency.
Wideband entitlements keys work the same way as before. You will have to get a separate key for RadioCentral but it should be system wide after that, simular to 2.0.
For software management, with RadioCentral being cloud based, yes. Programming is done primarily over wifi so no real reason to have a programming cable. As long as the computer pushing the update is on the same wifi the radio is on, you can manage it and update it any time with the device on. You can have a soft update push, where it asks the user if it is okay to go ahead and update, or force the update to happen without the user needing to approve it. I'm not sure what you mean when you say after a few years you can't update until you buy more time.
      Hope this helps some!
