The song is about Fritz Haber, who invented chlorine gas, phosgene gas, and mustard gas. He also created synthetic ammonia that is used in farming.

Maths or morality is a good question. Synthetic ammonia was able to grow human population from 1bil to 8bil, and there where around 1.3mil casualties in great war from those gasses.

@@markus2380 it's the age old battle of morality vs practicality. Where morals meet the law. It's very existential and one could argue there is no winning argument either way. It is subjective to the person.

The Haber-Bosch process is a large-scale industrial chemical process for the synthesis of ammonia. It is named after the German chemists Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch, who developed the process at the beginning of the 20th century . During production a waste product was created which was used for the gas attacks in the war

In the latter part of the song when they ask "what's coming next from your inventions" is a reference to the gas the Germans used on the Jews in the camps in WWII. It was developed from Fritz Habers discoveries. To make matters worse ... Fritz Haber was himself a Prussian Jew.

To be fair to Fritz, he specifically designed it with an agent to make it smell so it would be easily noticed and was supposed to be a pesticide. Unfortunately, with zyclon B, the natzis removed the smell component and had a different idea of what constituted "pests"

That toxic gas was used during WW1. It was also known as the mustard gas.

    • @lokiodinson2326

Actually, it was three types of toxic gases: chlorine, phosgene, and mustard.

Actually the first gas was bromine gas 1915 used against the Russians by 1917 mustard gas was created and the British also stole a stockpile and used it on the Germans too

@@dominiklehn2866 I was meaning that those were the three gases that Haber developed. From what I understood from the OP, it sounded like they were saying that mustard gas was the only one used (I could be mistaken about what the OP meant, though).

You can say that you loved history over and over again, but if you ask if this gas was ever used in combat (after they sing about soldiers dieding in the battlefield) and what time period it is (after 10 clues screamin WW1) you look like someone who slept on history lessons. And every other lesson too.
So, little breakdown - the song is about Fritz Haber. He created a Haber process (later perfected by Carl Bosh and called Haber-Bosch process), a way to create synthetic fertiliser, allowing to drasticly increase the effectivnes of agriculture, allowing the population of earth to grow - right now, 2/3 of us have something to eat thanks to him.
On the other hand, he also used this process to create explosive. And later create poison gasses and supervise they first uses. His inventions killed or permamently injure tens, if not hundreads of thousands.
After his death, his legacy was used to produce cyklon-B - gas used in gas chambers during the holocaust. Double unpleasant looking at the fact that he was a Jew himself.

I think you are being harsh. Liking history doesn't mean they are well educated in the subject. While I as well find it somewhat strange she doesn't know about chemical warfare in WW1 it's no reason to denigrate her.
Some people enjoy learning things but don't actively seek out knowledge.

@@A_Name_ I don't think not being well educated is really an excuse. In America it is well known that the education system doesn't teach you crap about this kind of stuff and if you like history you will seek to learn on your own. The Internet makes this more than easy

    Full explanation and story:
Fritz Haber, together with Carl Bosch invented a process of fixation of nitrogen from the air, creating first and up to date ONLY efficient way to obtain nitrogen compounds artificially without mining guano.
This invention is still one of the most important ever, because ammonia fertilizers are responsible for around 80 % of world wide crops productions. This ended famines and allowed insane population boosts through the 20th century.
But it also made world wars possible, because nitrogen compounds are essential for explosives. This is the part of song reffering to MATH - His invention saved and made possible of existence of countless lives but also ended milions of lives.
Aaand during WWI he developed several toxic compounds used for chemical warfare and personally overseen their releases. This is the part about morality.
Nobody can blame him for the explosives as he didnt create, invented or aimed for that in the first place. But the chemical warfare WAS his personal choice.
And thats why Fritz Haber is one of the most controversial scientists ever, because his invention was the best ever for the humanity, but also used for big evils + he himself killed thousands by chemical warfare.
Hmmm... Imagine it this way: Its like if Oppenheimer first constructed nuclear powerplant and THEN someone else made a bomb on the principles, but Oppenheimer was the one dropping it on Nagasaki and Hiroshima himself... I cant think of anything closer.

I don't know why some ppl are considered as good or bad by inventions. It's your perspective. In war pretty much everything is used. To all and all summary he contributed way more to humanity than he took. I do it by numbers and not by any political or emotional stance. Ofc ppl have opinions. About song itself...it's not that bad actually. 😉
