Met Charlie Wilcoxon and bought Gretsch drums from him in 1955 when Iwas 12! Amazed to hear you speak of his book. It's how I learned finger stick control!
Thank you Quincy, amazing lesson and mention to the all greats! Wilcoxon Swing Solos, Alan's Rudimental, and of course the work and influence of Philly on drums... Love your work from Argentina.
Dear Quincy: very nice lesson! It's rare to find things like this here (YoutTube). Drummers nowadays are much more into... grimmicks that sound... bad. Therfore, my congratulations. Simple, creative, useful and... musical!
Hi, Q! I'm new at rudiments. Could you please write the sticking pattern? I think the first part would be: Rlrr Lrll RlRlrr LrLrll but i can't figure out the rest of it. Thanx!
I second the tuning comment. I absolutely love your sound (and playing). Would love to know relationship between top and bottom heads of toms and snare.
Hi Quincy, I've been learning a lot from your vids, they're really concise and give a jazz beginner like me a lot of material to practice on. Having said that, I do not use drum score; would you see this as a fundamental flaw for a player?
+hamfanny Thanks for checking out the video! The most important thing is feel for drummers. So not using music is not a flaw. But when it comes to playing other peoples music, it will hold you back. Being able to read something can help bring clarity to the idea you are trying to learn and thus, make it easier to grasp. Cheers!
Thanks for all your tutorials. Do you have a transcription of this particular lesson or any part of it? I'd be happy to paypal you for it. Thanks again!
Do you ever do syncopation book (applied rudiments) sort of exercises? Or were you just improvising different rudiments to have so much flow with everything you’re doing?
Hi quincy, your drum lessons help me out a lot, especially that one with the ride cymbal, my sound is a lot better now. what sticks are you using in this video? greetings from austria
What's Alan Dawson's ritual? I've heard of it but not sure on the exact routine? Do you have a video on it or is there a transcription of it somewhere? Thanks for this video. It's great. Good to see you back on herel;)
+tdrum21 If you check out his method book mentioned in the video, you will see the Ritual in there. There's a video of him playing the ritual with brushes here on UA-cam.
+ZionAfuang I just listen to the recording over and over and little bit at a time. If there is a really tricky spot, I'll slow it down using special software. The better you can sing it, the better you'll be able to play it. Cheers!
Good works. I am into my fifth month drumming. Is it possible that you write or can display the actual exercise visually? I can hear the first paradiddle and then I get lost after that. It seems that you are playing some rudiments in a different combination to how I have learned to play double or paradiddle diddle? Bless up
The first one that he is playing slow is this sticking ... Rlrr Lrll RlRlrr Lrll Rlrr LrLrll Rlrr Lrll Rlrrll Rlrrll Lrllrr Lrllrr Lrll R ...the capital letters are the accents.
What's the main order/pattern you're playing on the paradiddle bit there? Are you always changing it up or is there a recommended your order you're thinking of first?
+tdrum21 There's no particular order I'm playing the diddles. Just mixing them up at random. But it would be good to combine 2 rudiments first, then combine 3, etc... Practice this combination of rudiments. 2 paradiddles, 2 double-paradiddles, 2 paradiddle-diddles and then 1 paradiddle to flip the whole thing around to alternate the hands: RLRR LRLL RLRR LRLL RLRLRR LRLRLL RLRLRR LRLRLL RLRRLL RLRRLL RLRRLL RLRRLL RLRR LRLL RLRR LRLL RLRR LRLRLL RLRLRR LRLRLL RLRLRR LRLLRR LRLLRR LRLLRR LRLLRR LRLL Playing this will get you more comfortable combining different diddle rudiments.
Great thanks for this idea here. This is around what I was thinking on switching lead hands. I'll give this a try. Look forward to more videos to come!:)
Thanks. Looks really solid and dependtable for heavier cymbals with that handle and all. Do you ever use irregular subdivisions like quintuplets or septuplets in solos? Or anywhere? I've Been practicing with a metronome hand to hand just to get the mind-part down. The feeling of rushing triplets or whatever, and i was just wondering how you would apply it to jazz or in any musical context that isn't to prog, you know. -Keep the good videos coming my man

My cat just jumped on my lap, so I must be brief. Enjoying.
Thank you.
Great lesson. By the way, what kind of snare are you playing? It sounds great.
Do you ever do syncopation book (applied rudiments) sort of exercises? Or were you just improvising different rudiments to have so much flow with everything you’re doing?
Quincy...if you were to pick six rudiments to be the best at, or to concentrate on, what six would they be...curious
Love the videos!
+PapaG Cortellino I would choose: Singles, Doubles, Paradiddles, Double Paradiddles, Paradiddle-diddles and Flams. Cheers!
Cool man

Q-Tip, what size sticks do you use Prof. ?
Thank you Sir. ✌🏻
First I want to say thanks for your videos, they are great! I have a question about this video, what flam rudiment do you start this video with?
+M Boom Great, thanks!!
+Andreas Landström Thanks Andreas. That rudiment is actually called a Single Flammed Mill. Cheers!
What's Alan Dawson's ritual? I've heard of it but not sure on the exact routine? Do you have a video on it or is there a transcription of it somewhere? Thanks for this video. It's great. Good to see you back on herel;)

Thanks for the tips. What's the recommended Wilcoxson books/warmups you would recommend?
Any particular way you do transcribing, as you mentioned "to learn the language" ? eg aural, slowing down audio, rudimental analysis?
+ZionAfuang I just listen to the recording over and over and little bit at a time. If there is a really tricky spot, I'll slow it down using special software. The better you can sing it, the better you'll be able to play it. Cheers!
ZionGuy
Perfect Quincy!!!
+Klemens Marktl Klemens! Hope all is well with you bro!
Great lesson man. What ride cymbal is that ?
+mikeyterry28 Thanks Mikey. That's an old 20" A Zildjian.
What kind of issues?

Practice this combination of rudiments. 2 paradiddles, 2 double-paradiddles, 2 paradiddle-diddles and then 1 paradiddle to flip the whole thing around to alternate the hands:
RLRR LRLL RLRR LRLL RLRLRR LRLRLL RLRLRR LRLRLL RLRRLL RLRRLL RLRRLL RLRRLL RLRR
LRLL RLRR LRLL RLRR LRLRLL RLRLRR LRLRLL RLRLRR LRLLRR LRLLRR LRLLRR LRLLRR LRLL
Playing this will get you more comfortable combining different diddle rudiments.
Great thanks for this idea here. This is around what I was thinking on switching lead hands. I'll give this a try. Look forward to more videos to come!:)
What kind of ride stand you got there Quincy?
Hey man. It's a Mapex single-braced super light.
Thanks. Looks really solid and dependtable for heavier cymbals with that handle and all.

I use quintuplets and septuplets ALL THE TIME in solos and also behind soloists. Love them!
Cool! I would love for you to do a video some time about your ideas and concepts on the matter.
Thanks Cat! You're a great instructor!1

what are the best rudiments for soloing in a jazz situation?
For soloing in any style, Singles, Doubles, Diddles, Flams and Drags is all you need in my opinion.
