Hey Matthew! I'm sorry that u walked away from this video thinking that it was socially damaging. That wasn't our intent. Firstly, we had to mimic the original video we were parodying which is PSY's "Gentleman". If u watch the video, notice that he is trolling women the entire time. So we thought we'd tie that concept in with the "Cosplay doesn't equal Consent" movement in which women troll the guys this time. The kinda guys that shout "make me a sandwich" and try to get up-skirt shots at cons.
I totally understand what you're sayin'. We weren't trying to make a statement that getting hit on at a con is terrible. It was mostly about being disrespected, ya know? It's one thing to get hit on and another to be incessantly bothered when one has already said "no". Personal space has to be respected. There have been many cases in which cosplayers have been followed/stalked for hours at a con. That's no bueno lol.
Free Comic Book Day is this Saturday. Most shops are participating, at least 5 free comics to every person that comes in to EVERY SHOP.... And some places have other cool stuff going on, like Tate's. I am totally cosplaying that day ^_^ And I'd say to come in early cause there will for sure be a line!
Yeah, that kind of behavior is completely inappropriate. I would never condone it. I would like to say that it is 'obviously inappropriate', unfortunately you're right that it seems none too obvious to many of our fellow nerds. Sorry if I seemed overly harsh, but this isn't a whole lot of characters available for detailed criticism. Thanks for taking time to address my comment and doing it thoughtfully.
Oh, no need to apologize. My left ear drum is still recovering from hearing myself sing on horrid repeat. But at least I've got the dry humping down pact. :P
well, i'd go so far as to agree that if you look sexy, indeed people are going to react to that and our first reactions to the people we meet tend to be visual, so... yes. The wikipedia definition of "objectification" states: This term is also used to describe the treatment of a human being as a thing, disregarding his/her personality or sentience. --- Ain't that shit just ain't cool, ya know? I am personally all for cool heroines who arent just sex symbols, or devalued if they aren't sexy.
Unfortunately, a lot of my cosplay friends have been victim to this kind of abuse and behavior. From being stalked, followed, harassed, etc. Now, this kind of stuff happens to guys as well. But because this was a parody to reflect the opposite of PSY's music video, we made it girls vs. boys.
That's great and all, but I agree with the guy above you. As a single geeky dude, if I see a girl I know is into the same stuff as me, I'm going to try and talk to her. Disrespect isn't part of the equation; it's basic human interaction. Not every guy at a con is a creep, and I find nothing safety-harming about getting innocently hit on or conversed with, especially at a con.
Awesome! great work! already shared. we have to spread this video till it gets to everyone that go to conventions. I think there`s still a lot of people that doesn't realize that this is in fact a problem so big that its taking girls out of the geek circles. geek boys are just as lame as any other boys, and dont know respect. anyway, great work.
That poor guy just trying to read his comics in peace and he gets assaulted by grinding. For shame ladies. -Said no hetero man ever. Seriously though, I got a good chuckle out of it, gg gals.
The con security should be handling this situation better, I would like to think I would step in for anyone at a con being harrased that way. And I would like to think other con members would speak up if they saw something not right.
Sure but when you go out, you run the risk of being hit on. There is no rule about being Hit on at a con, people hit on those they find physically attractive or interesting. So wearing a cosplay will most likely catch more eyes than wearing your street clothes, being hit on will be a side effect. Notice I limit this to being hit on touching and cat calling I still find inappropriate and most definetly should be stopped.
Oh, I agree. Compliments and flirting is always fun though. And truth be told, I have never once received unwanted or overt attention when cosplaying. :-p Yes you should go to Tate's more---ESPECIALLY ON FREE COMIC BOOK DAY! woot!
Oh I know you were just messing around, and I totally get the "cosplay isn't consent" movement, but personally I get irked a bit if I try to strike up conversation or throw a compliment someone's way and get a bitchy response, or none at all. Awkwardness/Shyness is tough to get over, and I guess if the person I'm talking to is paranoid or haughty it could be seen as creepy, but it's not like I'm the problem there. And I should stop by Tate's WAY more often. X3
I don't know. I think the whole aesthetic of this is pretty damaging. It's hard enough for most nerdy guys to positively interact with women at all. Why discourage them by essentially telling them their fear is justified, straight to their face? Also, what's wrong with chatting someone up who obviously shares an interest with you? Especially if the worst he wants to do is get your number? Cute, well-written, funny, but socially damaging.
While I agree that at cons a lot of guys are perverted bastards always trying to touch and various other things they wouldn't do in the normal world, i also get the impression girls in this video dont want guys trying to chat them up either. A con is a public place and having a guy hit on you as long as he does it politely should not be frowned upon, I know of many people who have gotten together at cons.
This just may be my favorite Gentleman parody. Great use of the Tardis & Dr. Who. Only a "Fed Up Geeky Girl" would think of such a great use of Props. ;-)
martin is immature. no getting around that. and i'm not saying it's right that comic book heroines are drawn so provocatively but if you choose to dress like wonder woman or whoever then you can't be mad when you're objectified. It's just like a woman getting mad for being objectified while wearing a mini skirt or so on. again, not saying it's right but it's the way it is. it's not even unfair.
It's not supposed to be a joke it's supposed to show you what WE have to deal with on a daily basis, to try and make you think: "Oh dear. I would hate it being done to me. Maybe they do to, and I should stop subjecting them to it and just let them enjoy themselves in a safe, harrasement-free environment." But your name tells me you do not have the masculinity or maturity to think that, so please go away.
LOVING IT! Go Laura!
This needs more views.
agreed completely :) i was kind of worried people weren't going to be happy with my reply to you haha. but I did enjoy the vid.

I've never been disrespected either! But then again my cosplays aren't really the sexiest. I.e. Spinelli, Lydia Deetz, Juno, Coraline...etc. lol
Love this video and lyrics, was really well done.

This just may be my favorite Gentleman parody. Great use of the Tardis & Dr. Who. Only a "Fed Up Geeky Girl" would think of such a great use of Props. ;-)
So where do you draw the line between being objectified and being empowered?
martin is immature. no getting around that. and i'm not saying it's right that comic book heroines are drawn so provocatively but if you choose to dress like wonder woman or whoever then you can't be mad when you're objectified.
