That voice acting for the kill option was incredible, but this is the only way I would have seen it because I am both a sap that doesn't like killing characters and Claude is a character where all of my favorite niches combine into one.

@@biandanxious3438 True, but you have to defeat him as either Byleth or Edelgard in order to get the choice, which you probably won’t know about on your first go. I found it out by complete accident (of course I spared Claude, because I like to think I’m a decent human being).

The funny part is, if you let Claude live, everyone who followed him falls in line. The transition of the Alliance into becoming a part of the empire goes so smoothly that Edelgard and Hubert admire Claude even more for having a plan B in the event he lost that ensured the least amount of bloodshed possible.

@@dgcfgvvgb6555 Yep, I think he still goes back to his home country and becomes the ruler. Honestly, Claude's ultimate fate doesn't actually seem to vary much between a benevolent Black Eagles player and a Blue Lions or Golden Deer player. If I remember correctly, he eventually leaves and becomes the ruler of his home country in all three play throughs. In otherwords, you have to be a special kind of a**hole for Claude to end up dead. Lol.

Claude basically set up the entire alliance in a never ending conflict so they can maintain neutrality without being looked down on
Then sets it up so that whoever is winning at the time gets control of the Alliance, Goes home then establishes relations with the current governer of Fodlan
In war, That would be considered very scummy when you're meant to be friends with one side.
But to Claude it feels like the first step to ending racism. It's a pretty smart move if you think about it.
Unless of course he's dead... Then he can't get Fodlan and Almyra together or at least see it
This sounds pretty mean, but Claude’s final lines before he dies are my favorite bit of his voice acting in this game. The despair in his voice is so well-done.
So, so well-done.
It makes anyone being reminded of how heartless they have been with their final choice of taking this adorable lovesick teenage puppy to the dog meat market AFTER you’ve spent a good period of its young life nurture him, feed him, play with him and hug him all night and never let go.

Claude and Lysithea are the most painful kills, especially since GD was my first run. Such good VA work all around

Funny thing thouh Joe, Claude keeps his word and works with Edelgard from outse the empire as her first international ally till her; early voluntary retirement onceshe has a wordy successor

I like to think that while Claude is wishing Edelgard well with his dying breath she's already calling for the victory cheer with a foot on his chest.
None can say "Fuck Edelgard, she has no sympathy" and then pick to kill Claude. Don't worry, she really isn't as bad as she seems if given the proper chance.
I love the look Edelgard gives when Teach asks “Was there no other way?” As if to say “You’re the one who killed him!”
I believe there’s no reason to kill Claude. His and Edelgard’s goals are parallel so as long as she opens the boarders, he still wins. It’s not like Edelgard had prejudices against the outside world anyway.
Canonically, he survives on all routes. I just wish the choice had more weight to it beyond the Golden Deer student’s flavor text after.
Everyone assumes that he left for Almyra for AM and SS and became the king there. If anything, Claude would open relations between Fodlan and Almyra in order to stop the constant conflict between the two. Granted it may be difficult if you choose to spare him in CF
The way she’s like “OHHH WE KILLED CLAUDE, YAY, LET’S CELEBRATE!” really got on my nerves for some reason lmao. Like, in Azure moon Dimitri was so heartbroken and everything after her death and Claude was sympathetic towards her reasoning, but yeah, her reaction was pretty sick, as Joe said.

@@sjk8495 You can really hear her trying to rationalize her choice after the fact and cover up her feelings which is also how she handles Dimitri's death, so I think it was a badly placed line.
If you spare Claude, Edelgard actually sounds happier in the following cutscene.

As much as I love this game, Edelgard's reaction after Claude's death is indicative of this really weird inconsistency. On one hand, this game really wants you to feel regret at having to kill the students post timeskip; yet on the other hand it very rarely portrays the students in your chosen house as being particularly upset about what went down. While this game still ranks among my 3 favorite games, I do wish that this one aspect of the narrative had been written better; because when characters do acknowledge the things that happened- those are the moments that leave you stunned.

When I played Blue Lions the characters do express regret at killing, not just former classmates but all enemies. It shows in their battle quotes mostly. Tbh little lines like "I'm sorry" "All for my friends" "Don't hate me please" made such a huge difference for me even if they were tiny. This game is already so huge and complex as is, I feel that was a really good touch. My favorite though was when multiple characters would kill an enemy and simply reply "It is done". It's simple but really powerful to me because it's a full acknowledgement of the horror they've just committed but it's a necessity to reach peace, and mourning every single enemy you've ever killed won't be productive. It will either drive you into depression or insanity like it did Dimitri. So approaching every death by your hands with "It is done" is the most logical approach in a war. Not happy about what you've done, but not wasting time grieving either.
@@JinlongTheGoldenDragon Yea exactly and in monastery exploration dialogues too characters like Mercedes and Annette seem particularly upset over the fact that they need to kill people even more so their own past friends. Annette even goes as far as to say that maybe they shouldn’t have gotten closer in the first place if this is where it leads, and with that she reached the conclusion as to why people from all over Fodlan (and not only) study at the monastery, so as to to make it more difficult for them to rise against each other. Most of them express multiple times how much they do it only because it has to be done, due to, in this particular route, the war Edelgard has started.
I've never ever killed Claude in a playthrough EVER. My HEART IS SHATTERED, but I watched it...like a monster.... I'm awful

CF was my first route and I didn’t even realize it was possible to spare Claude if you had Edelgard beat him. Probably my only regret from my first playthrough lol
I was against him but didn't thought I'd kill him if I use another character. Well, end of story was that I used Ashe and he was gone 🥲
Had to play the golden deers for a second time after my CF playthrough just to get Claude back, haha.

When the video started I wasn't looking at the screen and I was like "I don't remember Claude saying, "This could be over now" in this game. Did I miss something" and then I looked at the screen and remembered he IS the voice of Claude but ya know, just talking like a normal human

What!? I spared Claude as I believed it was unnecessary killing. I recruited all the students and faculty I could in Crimson Flower as I want less people to get hurt during the war. Unfortunately, I did have to kill Hilda as she was putting some of my units in danger, including Lysithea and Marianne.

I intended to weaken Claude with Bernadetta before dealing the finishing blow with Edelgard, but Bernadetta crit, which killed Claude and finished the chapter, preventing me from fixing it with Divine Pulse

As much as the logic for killing him makes sense I do think that so long as he saw how Edelgard actually ended the church’s oppression, and started Fodlan’s reform, I don’t think he would actually fight her or even cause much trouble for her. I do think the biggest main difference he would do compared to Edelgard is do things outside the borders of Fodlan and basically return to be like “hey I think Almyran slavery in Fodlan should be done now, y’all should stop being racist”
It obviously would rile up the former Alliance, but I don’t think Edelgard would be entirely against it either. I think he could still live and they work together to workshop the best reality for Fodlan and beyond.
If only Edelgard couldn’t opened her true heart to Claude , allowing them both to win together 😢

By making it so that by being in 'debt' with her he could serve as a connected to Almyra and potentially get the two lands to join hands

Claude was playing for the winning side here and when it comes to war that's a dirty tactic.
I surprisingly was able to beat this chapter without killing anyone but the Almyran Soldiers and Nader I didn't want to kill Lysithea or Hilda
You can spare and recruit Lysithea if you fight her.
Perhaps the blue lions will be less miserable

Oh man...I'm in my 2nd GD playthrough after having played the game a handful of times. But I haven't brought myself to take this path yet. Now when I do, I will be hearing Claude's voice (or rather Joe) narrating this in my head. LMAO

When I first played through crimson flower, I chose to kill Claude, because I didn’t know if he was going to come back and I’d have to fight him again.

@@Ninjaananas They weren't being oppressed though. The church had too much power, sure, but it wasn't using it for evil. After all, it was the church that negotiated peace between the nations of Fodlan. They also used their power to help people, like orphans and such. Also Edelgard just did so many wrong things. Allying with those who Slither in the Dark, hiring bandits to murder Dimitri and Claude (who she didn't even try to explain her ideals to), remire village, turning people into demonic beasts, driving Rhea to madness, going straight to war without even attempting to negotiate with the other nations, and I'm probably forgetting all kinds of other atrocities that were either directly or indirectly her fault.
That is quite plot-twisting dramatic, Joe.

If by that you mean, the developers were shortsighted and didn't think to play a less cheery line if Claude was killed, then fine. But that's a development oversight, not a sign of Edelgard's total heartlessness, given that it plays regardless of whether or not you kill Claude. Particularly given how solemn she is after killing Dimitri.

The only route I've never played, and I would never play!
Claude is pretty chill guy, so I spared him. If he did continue to fight me later on, then that means more experience points for my units.
So when I played CF, it was after I had played every other route. For some reason, I decided to be a very evil person and didn’t spare anyone. Seteth, Flayn, Lysithea, Claude. None of them survived and I felt like a horrible person the entire time.
The devs didn’t make him an lgbt option so I was like “What’s the point?”
I was anoyed during my Golden deer playthroough , i wanted to romance all the route leaders on their respective routes as male Byleth and only El is Bi...but this MF ask you to dance in the cutscene ...got my hopes up since my first playthrough
Claude has some of the biggest bisexual energy in the game and to this day it makes no sense to me that Bylad can't s-support him
