  • Triumph Thruxton Motorcycle Review
    www.revzilla.co...
    The Triumph Thruxton is not the fastest bike out there, or the lightest, or the most technical, but damned if it’s not one of the coolest. With styling cues and lines cut straight from the 1970s, the Thruxton helped usher in a resurgence of the café racer in America. Or perhaps the resurgence of the café racer helped propel Thruxton’s sales. It’s the age-old “chicken or the egg” dilemma.

    You know what would be a cool segment, a bike improvement segment. Take something like the thruxton (or some other road bike) review it the same way, then upgrade the bike over a few weeks, showing how the upgrades make a difference over time. That would be a cool series for revzilla, especially since you have most of the parts to upgrade with.

      A Bonnie variant would be a good bike to showcase as there are a lot of directions one could go (cafe, street tracker, scrambler etc) and a lot of aftermarket stuff that an average guy can bolt on without a lot of fabrication.

    I fell in love with this bike when I first played eyes upon it back in ’07 or ’08. When I finally got a bike, almost exactly 1 year ago, it was a ’14 thruxton and I couldn’t be happier. I pretty much agree with everything stated in the video. I have since been working on making it my own; AI/O2 removal, shorty pipes, airbox removal/pod filters, new tune, etc. In all honesty the suspension doesn’t feel too bad for me, but not having much experience on other bikes is probably why. I’m sure I will eventually change that out.

    I had a 2013 Thruxton and I think your review is spot on. It's a relatively basic package out of the box but it can be customized to your dream bike easily. The suspension and exhaust upgrades are a must for this bike. I have sold the Thruxton and purchased a BMW R Nine T a few months ago. Totally different bike but equally fun!

    One of the best reviews on anything you will find. It is easy to get caught up in specsmanship, and miss the bigger picture. This reviewer covers the pros and cons but makes sure they in perspective.

      Spurgeon Dunbar
      Actually yes. Thruxton's one of the best looking bikes right from factory but I prefer a more agressive/caferacer
      look, so I replaced the stock exhaust with Triumph TORs (better sound),
      replaced the mirrors, replaced the turn signals, powder coated the rims
      (all black now), removed the rear fender, installed a new tail light, shortened the front fender and now I'm
      about to get Clubman bars for a more agressive riding position. One thing I love about this bike is the (almost) infinite options when it comes to costumization!

    One of the best, honest, most visual and pertinent MC reviews I have ever seen. You nailed the demographic of the buyer - boom. Plus, these and the Scrambler are an absolute bargain on the previously enjoyed market. I hear this one calling, but the Scrambler is whispering in my other ear.

    That was an excellent review. The camera work and audio was top notch.
    Regarding the Triumph, I thought you were spot on. I looked at buying one in 2013 and ended up finding a low mileage 2007 Ducati Sport 1000 S. I was also that guy looking for a retro bike with modern technology.
    I look forward to seeing more of your reviews; awesome job!

    • @SpurgeonDunbar
      @SpurgeonDunbar 9 років тому

      dinonoce That is an awesome bike. In the written review on Common Tread (www.revzilla.com/common-tread/triumph-thruxton-review), the Sport 1000 got a shout out as the Ducati I felt came closest to competing with the Thruxton. I found a yellow "S" version a few months back at our local Ducati shop, they were asking $17,999. It sold within a week.
      As for the camera work, we have an excellent young cameraman, ***** who has no fear of hanging off of the back of fast moving vehicles in an effort to make us look good. It's a daunting task.

      dafobra You bring up an excellent question. I am actually interested to see what happens with the new liquid cooled "Street Tracker" they have been working on. It would be great to see an updated version of this bike with upgraded performance but I would hope Triumph continues to release this version as well. I guess I just like the idea of having to learn a thing or two while modifying it yourself.

      Seems they did ok... I like the new engine a lot. I am not running out to trade in my old T-100, but I think they did a nice job updating the lines without crushing the history. It's weird, I still have a nostalgia for these older 865's and I think there are others in the same boat. I am guessing you're going to see the old ones hold favor with a small group of riders.

    Great job Spurgeon, you nailed it! I bought a Thruxton for all the same reasons and after beefing up the suspension, adding 2 into 1 pipe and toying with all the EPA stuff...this bike is amazing. I'm changing the rear sprocket to one with 2 more teeth for a little more in-town torque and juicing up some of the cosmetics to make it mine.

    Really good review. It was like a mechanic went with me check out a bike for sale and gave all the info I need before I put down my money. Personally, I would consider ditching that rear fender... maybe. The real question is: should I just buy a '04 or '05 T100 and Spurgeon-ize it?

      ***** I hope "Spurgeon-ize" catches on as an actual thing. "Hey Mom, guess what!?"
      If you are going to "Spurgeon-ize" it, the rear fender has to go. I love the sans-fender look. Just be prepared to ride around with a solid strip of mud and water up the back of your jacket if you ever plan on playing in mud puddles!

It has been across the country with me 3 times, has well over 100,000 miles on it, and keeps on ticking. I am a new rider looking for a bike and I was highly interested in the Iron. I'm 5' 8" 140 lbs and the most experience I have with the Iron is sitting on it at the local Harley dealership. I'm looking for something fun to ride that doesn't necessarily need to be the fastest bike out there. I plan on making hour long commutes with it and the occasional 3 hour trips. I live in Southern California thought the Iron was a good looking bike that is reliable. I struggled to find an expert opinion on the bike so anything helps and I'm glad I can get feedback from experienced riders like yourselves in a timely manner so thank you for that. +Yi Zhang Thanks! I answered this question in the comments below but I wanted to copy my original response for you here so you don't have to go diggin':
      "The jacket was a college graduation present to myself back in 2006. It is an old Rev'It! RS2 race jacket. It has been across the country with me 3 times, has well over 100,000 miles on it, and keeps on ticking. While Rev'It! no longer makes the RS2 you should check out the GT-R: (www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/revit-gt-r-leather-jacket) The two shares a lot of similarities."

    I'm looking at an older (2008) Thruxton, would you say some of the issues, I.E fueling, would be better back then?

    • @RevZilla
      @RevZilla  8 років тому

      It will definitely be easier to adjust the fueling with a carbureted model, but some of the short comings still remain- soft suspension and a heavy wet weight. Still a great bike, though. It just needs a little massaging. -TeamZilla AJ

    I like Revzilla very much. The reviews, the hosts and the merchandise. There is only 1 thing I can't stand. Why do you have to put so many hand gestures and motions in your review when you are actually riding a motorcycle? If you keep your both hands on the handlebar, I will understand what you are say just fine. I don't need you to show me how well you can ride with one hand. It's not the point of making these videos. It's a safety issue. I want to see more reviews from you guys, so ride safe.

      Possibly. It's a little heavy, but the power is really tractable, so you'd probably be fine with it as a first bike. The brand new liquid-cooled Thruxton has a bigger engine with much more power than this previous-generation Thruxton. I would not recommend the new Thruxton as a first bike. -DrewZilla

    Wayyy too expensive for what they are in my opinion. if a modern bike was that compromised it would be deemed a failure. But with clever marketing the Thruxton gets away with it all. In saying that they do have a certain appeal about them and for those with deep pockets the problems are all forgotten.

      femaledeer I hear ya, and spokes typically mean you'll need tubes in the tires too -- but the look is fantastic and the ride is much smoother. Excel makes great aftermarket wheels and combined with Talon hubs they are a lot lighter than the stock wheels. Spokes for a retro bike -- must have.
