The Dutch Revolt was not about kicking an occupier out, but about religious autonomy as a consequence of the Spanish Inquisition against heretics.

The Netherlands were already united by Charles V, who separated them from the Holy Roman Empire under a single Lord and made sure they would stay together. More important reasons were: Central government, taxation to finance wars outside of the Netherlands, no respect for city and civil rights, control over trade with the east sea and England, etc.

Paul, you should the main library in Albany NY were you to visit the US again. The 17th century documents were partly saved when the then library was burned down. The were translated into the English language. Think they were translated in part by Charles T Gehring. There is a foundation called the New Netherlands Institute don't know they have a website or so, though I suppose they do. I just know of it when I visited Albany in 80s.

The national anthem is slightly confusing: its the Dutch national anthem, but it tells about a dude having German blood (Duits, but it could also be Diets, or Dutch, but the text clearly says 'Duitse' nowadays, so thats a bit strange eh?). Another strange thing is declaring that William also has always honoured the Spanish king. But we rebelled against Spain. Wait wut...? Its a bit puzzling, I was like: 'but I am not German, and I dont honor the Spanish king, I honor the Dutch king (queen in those days)' as a kid, lol
He did honour the Spanish King and feels the need to explain himself. He was steward (Stadtholder)to the king of Spain for the Netherlands and rebelled eventually, but even when rebelling he kept appealing to ancient rights and treaties, and inalienable rights. He kept pleading legal arguments why the King and his duke in charge were out of order. He never tried to become king himself, and never questioned the legitimacy of Philip II as the souvereign, that would be dishonourable and the whole nobility system was honour based. The Dutch DOI doesn't proclaim that they kick the king out either, it only states that Philip himself had left the legitimate throne of the Netherlands by being a tyrant and not willing to change his ways and respect the people's natural rights like to serve god according to their own conscience (basic freedom of religion in fact). So it is confusing because they weren't real republicans. It was a revolutionary document far ahead of it's time but the rebels didn't say all this king and nobility stuff is unfair bullshit, but claimed that a king had to serve his people and not tyrannize them. They did not intend to become a republic yet, and they certainly didn't want to pick a fight with all of Europe's kings and nobility. They only denied the king absolute rule and forced religion.
The sentence about the spanosh king is made sarcastically/in jest. Duitsers were an ancient tribe of people. The dutch people come from that tribe. Watch a vodeo about why germany has so many names after germanic tribes
You know what, the south of the Netherlands, even after the Dutch where able to get rid of the spanish, became a part of the Netherlands between 1850 and 1900, so pretty late. Especially my hometown Maastricht was and always had been some sort of a citystate. We, in our hometown, have our own national anthem and its not in Dutch but in our own dialect which is a mix of 50% German, 30% Dutch and 20% French. We still speak that dialect. By the way its not entirely correct that all Spanish back then were Moslims, most were Catholic, thats why practically all natives of the south are Roman Catholic.

I tried to translate a video from Dutch to English, the video is about 14 minutes long, but by Odin, it was a huge task (still not finished it): grab the video with OBS, listen to the text, and type it all down what they say, go over the text again to find any mistakes, then translate each blurp into English, then place the texts roughly in the proper place, then watch the entire video and tweak the places/timing of the texts to fit just fine and give enough time to read. Then check everything again for mistakes. Lol! its more work then I thought.

The USA Declaration of Independance was based upon De Akte Van Verlatingen from the Dutch.
