  • One summer morning in 1943, the secret wish of 15 year old Ina came true: She had a little sister. Late the night before, her uncle Antanas had deposited at the house, just outside Lazdijai, a 7 year old girl named Riva. Ina’s family was to keep Riva.
The catch: Riva was a Jew. If the Germans learned of Riva, this would have meant death for Riva, and probably also for the whole family who sheltered her, including Ina.
About one year later, up the country lane came - a German. But this German was a merchant, hoping to convert his inventory of candy into Deutschmarks before he fled toward Berlin. Ina tells what happened next.
Thanks to the courage and moral clarity of Ina’s family and her village, Riva survived the war. In 1946 Riva emigrated to New York, where she was reunited with her father.
