I’ve been following you two for a while now, but don’t think I’ve commented. I was raised in the country in Upstate New York many a year ago and I remember my brother and I going out into the woods and find all kinds of berries. We could walk down the railroad tracks with a 5 quart pan and come home with it FULL of wild strawberries. In the woods we found currants, black raspberries, and red raspberries. I’ve noticed over the years that I have NEVER seen black raspberries in the stores. I researched why and the only thing I could find was that they are very susceptible to disease, although I never noticed that in the wild, as they were always prolific. You have a gold mine there...the red/black raspberries are the BEST!!! ENJOY!!! 💕 P. S. I love your shirt too Kevin!!!
This year on March i brought 51 plants from a friend of mine and they are ready producing actually my son today came to my bed ( Saturday resting) with his hands full of them.glory to the Lord
I’ve never commented on a video before but I have to tell you guys what a wonderful couple you are & thank you for sharing your life with us & the great example you are & for teaching my 6 married kids & I how to take care of ourselves & to love our Heavenly Father & being so grateful for all He gives us
My Mother In Law and I used to pick wild black raspberries together. She taught me to tie an ice cream pail around my waist to have 2 hands free for picking. We would pick berries by the pail falls.
They grow very easy and we call them Cape gooseberries (appeliefies). I pick them as soon as the husk cover is dry. Make jam but take care the worms sometimes get to them first. Where one falls a lot of plants come up.
Wow! Lived in MO for almost 50 years and you identified 2 species of berries that I did not know about. Thank you! Sarah, I always feel close to God when I am in the woods
In the Summer when I was a kid (I grew up in MO) we would pick possum grapes and fox grapes. They grow wild (usually on vines up in trees). They are good for eating or jelly. Maybe keep an eye out see if you have any. To me, ground cherries are a strange mix of pineapple and tomato. I don't like them but I have family members that do.
we are lucky to have several wild berries growing on our steep Hillside to goes to the top of the hill or Mountain next to us. Huckleberry's salmon berries salal berries salal berries and blackberries and we mix them all together with blueberries we grow and strawberries and we make jam and we call it traffic jam because they're so many berries! It's a traffic jam with berries my kids all voted it's the best jam ever and that's all they beg me to make now! 💜
The ground cherries have a paper husk. When they are ripe they fall to the ground. The husk peals off and there is a small fruit inside. The fruit is different flavors. My favorite tastes a little like pineapple. Fresh eating, jams, pudding pies, and flavoring smoothies is what I have heard of
Ground cherries are one of my favorite things to eat. I grow them in my garden. I let them fall to the ground topically but you have to be quick or the ants/bugs will get them.
So many memories of picking black raspberries and dew berries in Douglas County as a child. We would end up with more chiggers than berries in our buckets most of the time! My Great Grandmother made some amazing sweet dumplings with any “left over” berry sauce after making her jams. I remember one time she poured some sauce into the hand cranked ice cream maker at the very end and made swirl berry ice cream! I have to say that the memories are as sweet as I remember the treats! Thank you again for taking me back to my childhood! A day trip to Blackjack school dirt road is in my near future!
Hi there, Winter Cherries are delicious...wait til the outer shell is like paper, and pick away...yum...they taste a little like tomato...awesome that you have wild black raspberries, i just found some wild ones too...i'm going back tomorrow to harvest some, they are ripe!!! YEA!!! Thank You for your knowledge, and sharing this video...Much Love and Be Well💛
You can pick up the ground cherries right off the ground...the more ripe they are the sweeter they will be...they have a really distinct flavor...I won't ruin the surprise...
We have wild raspberries growing on our property also. The problem with harvesting are the chiggers that seem to live to protect the plants! Sometimes it makes it not worth it! Love your discoveries and your adventures in life.
We live in NW Missouri and find tons of morel mushrooms. It just takes time to learn where to look. If you do find any save the water and cutoffs from when you clean them and spread them in your timber. ( they like rotten logs and maple trees.) After a few years of spreading the spores you will begin to find more and more mushrooms as long as you continue to spread spores. Sort of like farming morels
In Australia we know your ground cherry as Cape Gooseberry. They are ready to eat when the berry turns a golden colour. The less golden they are the more tart or sour they taste. I don't mind them a little tart.
Just got finished in West Plains picking our wild black raspberries on our road---made 4 HUGE black raspberry pies for family at Father's Day and hubby's work gang! LOVE them way better than our 5 rows (40 ft each) of blackberries!! But love the blackberries too! Thanks for sharing--Kristy
What an honor to take a trip in the woods with ya'll. 😊 God has provided great!😇🌱🌳🍒 I love that you appreciate what he has gifted you and that you make use of it. Thank you for taking us along on your adventure. Raspberry season has totally been abundant for us as well. We have collected 3 gallons and will be making wild raspberry jam again this year. It has become a 'tradition' for gifting them.🎁 God Bless you and much love 💖 -Karen
My grandmother had ground cherries in her flower garden around her house. You pick them when the shell is thin and papery. I hope you like them. I hated them as a young person and my taste buds never changed to ever like them. Gooseberries are entirely different. Love them, and I have the best recipe for pie using cream. Delish! Let me know if you want the recipe , will send. Great video. Just love you guys.
our wild blackcaps are huge here in Washington state. We had them surrounding our property and could almost pick . I know you will enjoy them.whenever we wanted to.. Nice chatting with you
if you want a sweet tart flavor, pick a groundcherry off the plant that looks halfway ripe (when compared to the ripe husks on the ground). Or very sweet, just grab the ones on the ground. They keep remarkably well in the husks, I've stored them at room temp for a couple of weeks and they do great.
That is a wonderful day!! Luke from MIGardener says that tomatillos are just to be picked up off the ground is when they are ripe and not picked off the plant. But I don’t know about ground cherries. Maybe ask him.
Ok, I finally have to say something about Kevin's shirts. I've been binge watching all of your videos from the very beginning over the last month or so, and this is the best T-shirt EVER!!! Made me LOL when I saw it!! Absolutely LOVE your videos!
In my area, indiana, we have black berries, raspberries and wild rose growing among each other. If u find one type chances are theres more to forage after one crop ends another begins. I get blackberry right after the raspberries are done.
When I lived out on the farm we had a big coulee ...in the Month of June the morales seemed to come in plenty...June is typically wet and the morels love that for growing...also in the coulee where it stayed damp. You could try a typically wetter month for your area.
Thank you for the closeups and explanation. I think I have raspberries all over, they come up where I don't want them so I finally grabbed some up and planted them in a large pot. See what they can do.
We love to pick our black berries and blue berries.... however, here in Wisconsin, we need to wear long sleeve everything....and maybe even mosquito netting over the head.... yes, the Wisconsin state bird is the Mosquito!!!! LOL! Thanks for sharing!!
We have a lot of mulberry trees around our property so this year we harvested enough to make 3 gallons of mulberry wine! In the past 2 years, we've made raspberry, cherry, grape, apple, peach, pineapple, and cranberry wine. We don't buy wine at the store anymore. It's very simple to make and the equipment is relatively inexpensive. The cost to make wine is a bag of sugar and a packet of yeast (about $.75). Alcohol isn't for everyone, but if you enjoy tasty wine (with no additives!), making your own is a great way to use those homestead fruits and berries!
So refreshing to hear your appreciation for God, His creation and your special time with your husband. That's a funny shirt Kevin! Good thing you feel those ticks right away. I've been told a few times that tomatillo's are in the Gooseberry family (not tomatoes). Enjoyed the video very much.
keandric -- While not as cool as foraging in the Ozarks, SoCal does have some foraging. Lemonade Berry, for one. This link has pictures dinafisher.net/foraging/
look's like you had a good day, what's going on! Rose (wholesome Root's) went to the wood's this week, got home and the goat's were out. love sue xxx UK
I grew ground cherry for several years. First off , they are harvested from the ground hence the name. In the fall when I cleaned the garden beds and threw the remains into the compost there were always a few unripe fruit left on the plants which sprouted the following spring. The same goes for any fruit forgotten on the ground.I had ground cherries coming up for a few years more then I originally planned on. They love a rich soil and will overgrow and break if excessively fed .
my grandmother had ground cherries in her garden. used to look for the ones fallen to the ground for the sweetest taste ... I just planted some last week from Baker's Creek
Those berries look delicious. Homemade black raspberry jam sounds great. I was wondering how the rabbits got out. Glad you caught them all. I, also, love the shirt Kevin!
Nice video. Brought back childhood memories. My Granny was a master wild blackberry and wild grape picker, and of course my brothers and I always got dragged along to help pick!
Purrfectly interesting about the berries. Enjoyed seeing your piggies and goats too! Enjoyed my coffee while watching.Thank you for sharing! Stay Blessed.
I love picking berries. When I lived in PA, we went looking for morels when the dogwood was in bloom. Usually mid to late may after a good rain. I love morels!
Thanks for showing the different berries. Im sure i have the dew berries but thank i may have the grounb cherries also. Will be checking later today. THANK YOU FOR SHARING
Thank you! We have a humble 10 acres which is mostly wooded. We have taken many blackberries, but we didn't know about the black cap raspberries. We went out today, and we found some! They were so much sweeter than the blackberries.
Ground cherries are yummy. Wait'll they turn yellow and the papery covering dries out. fine when they drop but bugs are likely to get to them before you. in my experience anyway... They almost have a slight custardy flavor... sweet mild but iguess flavor can vary depending on conditions.. I find they really like to grow where my pigs are... moved the pigs and the previous spot only had a couple baby plants after that..
Anyone have any idea on taking a class on foraging? I would like to know the edible weeds, flowers and berries and the medicinal uses? I used to know what Polk looked like, I used to pick it in Arkansas when I was a teenager, have forgotten now. Kansas here! I'm really enjoying your videos.
Very awesome! lol had to laugh about the bunnies running around. I had a Lionhead male that I just could not catch. He lived on my property for a couple of years and for several years I saw wild rabbits with "hair do's" as his legacy.
Thank you for the video. I have these growing on my place and didnt know what they were called. I learned something new. I need to get picking, Mine grow on a steep hillside so hard to get to. I would love to get enough for a batch of jelly. I live in NE Oklahoma, Grand Lake area but was in Joplin, MO for 20 years before moving to the Lake. Really enjoy your videos!
These berries are great. We have come across a couple patch of them at a couple lake areas. The only bad part is the mosquitos carry us away when we go to pick them. But they make great jam. Enjoy. Oh the ground cherries. My mother use o make jam with them. So a few years ago I thou get I wanted some childhood memories . When to the Green house and asked about them. They had the plants . But they told me not to plant them anywhere I didn’t want them forever. The said they are a notorious weed! And will multiply. So leave them where they are and go to them.
The ground cherry plant looks like what I grow that we call tomatillos. I use them to make salsa verde. Mine are green but I think they come in different colors.
Very lovely..be careful bear eat those too. Just had a huge one under my window and a day later a younger one rolling on our walk to the drive. He was cute but the big guy was hungry. Very nice bounty. The thorns are ouchies. Just picked a tick off my neck.. boo..Mmm jam yummy

For the ground cherries you harvest the fallen ones. Put them in a bowl until husk is very brittle and paperlike. They make a terrific jam !!
People who live off land have long healthy life
They grow very easy and we call them Cape gooseberries (appeliefies). I pick them as soon as the husk cover is dry. Make jam but take care the worms sometimes get to them first. Where one falls a lot of plants come up.
Jess, from Roots and refuge can tell you all about them. She called them the garden snack cause so few actually made it into the house.

How wonderful to go forage in your own forest and some nice pickings there, plus your daily exercise lol

Speaking from experience a fishing dip net is awesome for catching those escapee bunnies
That's exactly what we do also!!
Rabbit roundup sounds like a fun challenge. Lol.
Here in Ontario Canada we pick black berries that grows close to the ground the difference here is low bush blackberry and high bush blackberry
Good Lord above I wish we had woods like that to ramble and forage through. Ah, well, I’m very happy for y’all! I love that shirt Kevin! Blessings!
I Know Right?? Me too! Where I am in Southern California, we don't have ANY foraging to be had :(

I know the struggle on morels is real those little buggers can be a pain to find
I'd be going early morning berry picking every time I noticed them, I love berries!

Bears are becoming more common here but luckily we haven't seen any on our property.
I've made pie out of black raspberries. It's taste amazing
