Love that the hooded character had a unique combat style of using the environment to her advantage to supplement her hand to hand combat compared to previous characters from earlier animations! Loved the dynamic between the duo to, where although the unhooded character wasn’t as adept to combat, she was willing to participate in critical moments trying her best to give her partner the upperhand until it was a lost cause, knowing her limits. Love the influx of animations so far Hali! Hope you’re doing well!
the flow of the combat is SO fluid that i can really feel not just personality behind the actions, but also the gradual development from clumsy self defense into strategic aggression. your pacing really is unrivaled!
god damn. i really like the amount of there being more knockouts or disablings then straight up deaths, it really gives the vibe of defending instead of attacking.
2:37 this scene of the helmet being used as a means of defense and a improvised weapon is great to me, because you don't really see helmets being used as a weapon in many Madness inspired animations. If there's ever a continuation of this animation in the future, I really hope there's a scene where the hooded peasant who's attempting to escape prison runs into an armory before walking out in an improvised suit of helmet armor that acts as a sort of a field of clumsiness whenever someone tries to land a strike.
Weirded out how the woman survive 2 hits from warhammer (should broke her ribs and arm easily) and then believing the allegation for witchcraft after she survive a direct piercing of halberd. I really like the concept art from you other post and certainly will be viewing your other animations. The fighting is clean and the tensions is real, only downside most of the tensions dissappear once I figured she able to take some hits. Good job.
Yeah the first hit from the warhammer should have been game over for her, but i guess in order to make it a “fair fight” between one unarmed person and many armed people there needed to be a bit of main-character-ness happening lol. The awesomeness of the animation outweighs that though so I still love it. The black haired woman did say “you need to heal” (as opposed to “oh my god you got stabbed”) which is weird phrasing unless she actually can magically fix her wounds.
yall are saying this as if a peasant being able to fight back for long is realistic enough, not to mention it is a woman, which is ten times more unrealistic
This is great! And cute, at least in the beginning. Don’t worry or beat yourself up about freezing characters, I think most people would freeze if they got hit in the face with a door.
Reminds me of that one colonist I had in my Rimworld modded medieval playthrough. Tanked an entire insectoid infestation all by herself before passing out and nearly dying.
I've only ever done a few UA-cam comments this year, but this animation left a really good impression. I'm not even one who watches Madness Combat stuff, or fighting animations by individual artists at all; I just so happened to have this in my first row of recommended videos on the home page. And from the quality and length of this video, as well as the time taken to create this, I seriously think you deserve more from it. I loved this video, and clearly others have, too. Well done!
The way less fatally injured characters keep trying to fight is a detail I really like The closer-to-realism proportions of your custom character models compared to the Madness hobgoblins definitely allows for clearer (and more extravagant) motions, really excited to see your next project! edit: also, the MC injuries. it's much more tense than most fight animations since make your POV characters take damage and usually lose at the end. sharp weapons near unarmored characters actually make me nervous, as they should. badass.
This video. From Start to finish. It is the pilot episode, for a web series with about seven seasons. I would happily binge through in one sitting, purely because of how it is able to keep me at the edge of my seat with *every single episode.* Hell, I wish it actually was that. Good work, I can see you going places.
This really impressed me. It made me happy to see a Madness Combat styled animation that tries to answer the question: "What if we did it without guns?" This is unique to me and I really liked what I saw. I approve of the story and flow and the choreography, even despite the problems you had with it. I give my praise.
"That f@cking peasent... is John Wick" (I don't know much about these animations, I just find them great and awesome. It reminds me of John you know who, a lot)
Outstanding animation and choreography as everyone has said, I particularly like how the fight escalates from knocking each other down and disabling blows to full-on stabs and cuts, it felt really natural. Also how the protag's strikes become slower and sloppier from exaustion. The only thing I would add is having bloodstains on the weapons, but I understand it's a pretty minor detail. Keep going!
The choreography I believe was both unique and fresh by taking more environmental influences for weapons and opportunities such as creating spacing or movement tools. I believe you did really well in displaying a quick on her feet, fast thinking character if that is what you were going for. you have a good range of animating fights .You are One of my favorite animators and i wish you well
"You are being arrested for pointy shoe owning, cheese touch, bad sword skills-" "I assure you officer, I have very good sword skills. Just stand still."
I really like this! It definitely makes sense that the peasants would be way more skilled with their tools than soldiers with weapons since the peasants would be using tools their whole life rather than soldiers who get a few weeks of training. The way everything feels floaty makes me feel like this was inspired by the madness series a little. The choreography is really good, especially considering the limitations of 2D animation. Fantastic job!
Counterarguement: Using farming tools and training with weapons are two different things. I might be good at swinging a scythe to cut grass, but using it as a weapon is fundamentally different. You need to know how to block, parry, swing, and manuever it in such a way to give you the advantage in a fight. And since farming tools are not fighting tools, they are meant for different things. While an axe used to split logs is heavy and unweildy, an axe used for combat is light, fast, and has a smaller head for concentrating force. Not to mention, soldiers and knights in the Middle Ages trained constantly to master their weapon of choice. When the knight and the protag where dueling with a halberd and scythe respectively, the knight had the upper hand in skill and technique. He was able to use the halberds design to grapple the scythe and destabilize the protag. We also saw how the scythe got stuck in the ground due to its shape, which nearly caused the protag to lose. Its obvious that the protag has actual combat skill, rather than just being a good farmer.
Nice to see the main character take minor hits and make mistakes instead of parrying everything, and dodging bullets. Her durability is off the charts tho, surprised she's still able to even fight proficiently after she took a stab wound from a halberd. Great animation, the combat flowed very well.
Maaaaan, this is wonderful. SO much smoothness and creativity on display. The struggles made me tense and things like the double-handle cheese slicerr made me wince. Cool to see the scythe and halberd getting crossed, the helmet being a simultaneous improvised shield and battering weapon, and all the crates and stools being slid around. Thank you for this animation. It's fantastic. Hope that those two will get to a better situation. or better yet, that the laws become less strict and stupid.
I gotta say, your work really stands out when it comes to your more recent melee-oriented animations. It almost feels like I'm watching a more violent version of a Jackie Chan movie (I actually wrote this part of the comment before reading the description), the way the characters are constantly moving and acting, the way various props in the environment are constantly incorporated into the fights themselves in unique ways. Most other Madness-inspired animators just speed up the action to inhuman levels and increase the bodycount when they want to have an impressive scene, so it's really cool that your animations avoid those crutches while still managing to feel chaotic and digestible. In short, you have cooked.
So Im not the only one who thought of the "Jackie Chan Martial Arts" style. While one could fight sure, it's often better to have a weapon, use the environment to advantage like in that Sifu game.
I loved the combat and animation and how this whole fight scene was made. I like how you made the fight very fair and even between the couple and the soldiers to show the main character still can get hurt and like how the main character was using the surrounding objects as tools to take advantage of the whole battle And the way the she axed the hell out of that one soldier out of pure rage was really good touch :D i like the video and i hope you succeed
Awesome. Nailed the vibe of two combat-inexperienced people desperately trying to hold their own against more comparatively adequately-trained enemies and coming out on top because of creative use of environment and improvised weapons. Honestly a welcome change of pace from the usual kind of impervious badass protags in like, most madcom animations for example. I fuck with it heavy 💪
This Madness combat Animation be looking different than the usual one's I'm used to but i dig it Unfortunately you missed madness day for this because this one is peak story and animation
love the more realistic style paired with the madness combat ish animation style, only thing i could ever see that would improve this is maybe making the injurys look more important and impactful, like if she gets hit in the head maybe she has to struggle for her life to recover, that kinda stuff. super incredible work man!
the sheer fact this video has less then one hundred thousand views in of itself is the best example of how the UA-cam algorithm can just absolutely screw honestly creators over, keep trying, your videos are unbelievably good
I'm a bit confused. Does the -Lesbians- being scribbled over mean it's the only crime committed, or does it mean that they committed everything except this crime? Or was that supposed to be blood? Then how did it get there?
Great work! Wonder if Hooded Lady's friend ever made a promise and now it's time for her to remember that promise. Would be cool to see a sequel where her friend does training montages and learns to fight and rescues her. Yes, the promise thing is a bit of a Signalis reference.
The combat is really realistic, I actually like how well made it is just a few problems though. One, the battle axe is way too short, it should be able six foot or the same height as the dude holding it (maybe taller, it is so he can slide his hands along the shaft to slash with more force) and the people who use poleamrs get too close in the combat, the point of a long wrapon is to stay out of the enemy's range

Awsome animation. Especially with this unique art style and the feel that you give that the soldiers are not stupid but show training

Nah it witchcraft, no matter how skilled you are you ain’t tanking a halberd stab and take on like 5 armed men with just farming tools.
