Yup, the defense played well. It was the offensive game plan and play calls that was head scratching. Especially after just witnessing what their offense is capable of doing against one of the better SEC defenses.
In fairness, Ohio State matchup up perfectly with Tennessee; especially in the cold weather. I am not certain that that same Tennessee team could not not beat at least half the teams in the playoffs.
I'm not sure how you judge teams. I think OSU is better than Penn "Vandy" St and a team that lost to lawn mower u. If you want to blindly hate on a conference. Sure, TN is the worst team to every play pretend football ever.

I looked through the history books and it shows that all 4 times the SEC had to travel up north to play Ohio State, the SEC team lost to Ohio State. The only reason we had a great record vs. Ohio State is they had to travel south for 95% of the games we played against them. Will 95% 5% become 50% 50% ?

Also, the stat they always put is the postseason record vs. the SEC; the overall record is around .500.

I love the college football playoff format the way it is. Only thing I would change is make it to where the quarterfinals have home games as well. This would make it to where all of the 1st round winners get a home and a road game.
Those teams had their chance to win the easy games in front of them and they didn’t. I would rather a team who earned it get in, than rewarding a talented team who stumbled through their schedule. There have been so many instances of great teams like Boise in the past not getting a chance to play for a title, then they end up beating one of the big boys in a bowl game. Alabama and Ole Miss weren’t going to win this year’s playoff either.
As for tourney invitees, I don't think worrying about 9-12 is that useful. It's very unlikely that they will impact the final. So, if they aren't gonna be good enough no matter what, then most deserving seems wiser than perceived best.

My own ambivalent attitude toward it aside, it was certainly a notable phenomenon and something I'll be watching for in the future.
