Their middle school is our high school generally speaking, maybe slightly above that. Choosing a high school is like choosing college. You have to study and prepare for months just for entrance exams. And because of Asian culture, the likelihood that you don't know what you are going to do is very unlikely. Your family will be preparing you and putting pressure on you for a particular field or occupation. So you'd definitely know by the end of middle school what you're potential pathways are and would've started preparing for it. Mob doesn't know because his emotions are always suppressed because he can't control them. So he doesn't get much opportunity to find his interests especially since he spends too much time at his part time job. His parents are oddly lax and for Japanese parents. They don't even seem to work are at home quite often unlike a lot Asian parents. That's the jist!
Actually a lot of civilization (well all rice farming civilization) did that. Its just modern people have completely forgotten that or just not know about it.
Trivia (fyi): Mesato (the journalist girl who keeps pushing for Mob to be a cult leader) her voice actress has changed this season and now she's voiced by the actress who voiced Annie (from AoT)

I felt this episode in my soul. My high-school was so pushy about career paths that I couldn’t think about my future without completely breaking down and it ended up getting so bad I dropped out. Society puts way too much pressure on kids to decide on the fate of their lives in their teens.
Vinland saga season 2 was just confirmed for January 9th so that’s another show you will have perfect timing for!! Can’t wait to watch that one next long time coming

Besides, it has one of the best cast of main and supporting characters in a TV series, including one of the best protagonists in anime/manga and the greatest antagonist in animanga. Also, I'm not mistaken, Netflix has just put in its catalog (furthermore, I don't think that you have problems in seeing it). If you like suspense, you'll love *MONSTER*

I don't know if it's a good idea to recommend any anime that has Ecchi or things and concepts that only the Weebs would actually understand (Like underage teens doing adult and sexual things, which happens in 80% of animes). Better to keep playing it safe and recommend anime that are more for the general public. Attack on Titan, Fullmetal, Death Note, Vinland Saga etc. These "Normie" animes. But aside from that, who knows if they'll like it, not because it's explicit, they are watching the boys that show it's also explicit,I just don't know if they would like it.
