I did some research, not sure if it has an official name but if you search " Gate to Genghis Khan statue" something similar to it pops up. The movie is based during WWII so I guess the years were 1945+ when they walked. Maybe the Gate was still being build that's why it looks incomplete or deserted, but it's similar to the gate to Genghis Khan statue.

Mongolia was Communist during WW2, these guys were fortunate that China still wasn't Communist rather it was ruled by the Nationalist Kuomintang who now ruled Taiwan today. If China happened to be Communist as well, there'd be little chance for them to pass through.
