Obviously, Ram Dass is very articulate and eloquent. However, it was the brilliance of the interviewer that brought out so much information from Ram Dass. The interviewer was so objective and did not try to challenge what Ram Dass was saying. Instead he was genuinely and respectfully attempting understand what exactly Dass was saying and experiencing. Very rare to see such level of integrity now on TV.
Levin does a fantastic job asking all the relevant questions without any personal judgements. So let us complement him for 'playing his part' so damn perfectly.
Satyajeet Prabhu I agree he did nicely asking that which he asked. However, there are questions he could have asked which would have been much more relevant. One thing I have learned in being a student of the world is this; if I knew all the relevant questions to ask about a subject, I would already have mastered it; when you go to a teacher with a whole host of questions it means that their first task is to sweep away all preconceived notions you already have, such that they can actually begin to teach you. Thus, whenever one meets with a teacher and wishes to learn all that they can teach, the first question the student should pose is "Sir, what questions should I be asking during our time together?"
Levin: "Do we all need a teacher? Do we all need a guru?" A funny thing happened in the last 10 years... UA-cam became my guru. Thanks to videos like this one, which were, for all intents and purposes, unaccessible to me before UA-cam.
My own transformation happened while serving time in federal prison. I spent half of my sentence living through my ego, the other half of my sentence finding ways to reduce it. Once I dropped it, I found reasons to spend time in solitary to go even deeper into myself. I often explain to people how ironic solitary is. The state uses it as a punishment, but in reality it is an incredibly useful tool for self-realization and spiritual development. I probably would have left a monastery if that was the transformative place for me in an alternate circumstance. Being locked behind a door gave me no choice but to continue the deep dive and deal with demons that became very small and insignificant. Solitary gives the prisoner space to fully realize himself, time for self reflection, and hours of daily meditation. Some prisoners use it similarly as I did.
Wow!! That was mind blowing. I am from India’s and have been listening to these things all my life in bits and pices but hardly ever someone explained them so vividly. Thank you Ram Dass 🙏 Rather thanks to Levin for asking these questions. Like they say, Bhagvat Geeta could not have come into existence if Arjuna hadn’t asked so many questions to Krishna.
Thumb up for your comments! Actually there are many enlightened beings than i thought, there is an internal happjness released i side me, blessed him and hope he continued to pursue of freedom for mankind! I also watch the episode of arjuna and krishna, amazing conversation, ever time i recall it it gave me a mo ent of happiness and peace that i cannot expressed in words!
Pure wisdom put across with such clarity... and under the kind of intellectual scrutiny that can't be found any more, even through the BBC. 'Never mind the quality, feel the width' is the mantra these days.
The fundamental question that we should be asking ourselves is why we should continually choose to reincarnate ? The answer is that seemingly we become addicted to Lila - the play of forms - and choose to stay on that reincarnation 'hamster-wheel'. But to what end ? How many times do we have to go through the cycle before we understand that we have the choice of stepping-off between incarnations ?
Peter Marshall I recently seen drunvalos worshop and he mentioned that our ascended masters from this time on to keep climing densities further 13th dimension where our reality disintegrates to change human conscience for the better. Bottom line is we will not even have the option to reincarnate back to physical forms, I recommend you to watch some of his Q&A videos on his youtube channel. Thanks for reading, namaste.
Peter Marshall I feel there is purpose to the continuous reincarnation. As Ram Dass said in the interview, it is like "the one," God/Source whatever you want to call it, getting to know itself through the many. Ultimately perhaps there will be a unification between Lila and Source, where the play of forms continues with it's inherent perceptions of individuality, but combined with the inherent oneness of Source.
How is the monk clever in saying "I could have ur sword run through my belly without blinking an eye" what lol? You die like there's no power to that ahhab
Wow! Such a great interview. Love Ram Dass. I thank the late great Wayne Dyer as well, cause that is how I found out about Ram Dass. So much to learn from. ❤️
Many thanks for this video. I caught this by chance when it was first broadcast in 1981 and have searched for it ever since, mentioned it to many friends and often thought of the interaction between Levin and Ram Dass. Namaste. Tom
I love when he says that he is only lying because truth has no form. I also feel that words can only tap on the border of what is beyond. Nothing in the realm of forms can portray the eternal laws of the formless, except when you view the variety of forms as one interlocking whole.
Ram Dass was truly a national treasure. I need to learn to let go of ego and open my heart to the universe and all it's creations. Love is the answer. God, Guru and Self are One. Very eye opening stuff.
Amazing interview, Praise to Ram Dass for the elucidative teachings and for the interviewer which brillant contributed for the flowersh of the teacher... Thank you!
Priceless! What an insight! What conviction! I have not seen such lucid clarity in recent times from someone living. Outstanding, Baba Ram Dass has the blessings of Maharaj Neem Karoli Baba is evident. Jai Shri Maharaj.
His conviction is steadfast, urgently lived each moment, the heart is brightened, lets give it a try ourselves! We all have that quality to awaken from the illusions!
I LOVE HOW YOU CAN SEE THE DIFFERENCE IN THE LEVEL OF HIS EGO THEN, COMPARED TO NOW, WHERE HE IS MUCH MORE BEAUTIFUL, TRUE TO HIMSELF AND LESS RIDGID... AS AWAKE AS HE APPEARS HERE, HE HAS COME A LONG WAY. WHAT A MAN
14:20 his smile when the presenter say that: 'Oh, but I did fool you!' The man must have had so much fun in his life talking to people about this experience! Nice one, Dick!
I remember seeing this in 1981 when it was broadcast, it's stuck with me since. I'm thinking that I saw this in 1980 and not 1981, but (the beeb being the beeb) it would certainly have been repeated multiple times after first broadcast.
i cant believe i dare to have trhought I might be in some special generation that will experience "enlightenment" when such a majestic event happened years ago
ram dass did more for my middle-age self awareness than anybody I ever listened to, sat with or read on my own red road. RD, psychadelix and arduous Lakota ceremony taught me to let go more and more of who I was born as so that I could become the being I was meant to evolve into - the one I was meant to be before I was born, so said alan watts - nice phrase isn't it - the REAL you, who you REALLY are - the one before you were born. A'ho.
I used to watch Bernard Levin when I lived in England . I have not seen any of his interviews since I left. This is the first time I have seen him talk respectively to the interviewee. Most of the the time he was exposing his guests as fraudulent. And he was very good at it. Since I really like Ram Dass, and what he has to say, this was a very pleasant surprise.
At the beginning of this clip you can see ram dass using his invisible beads just like maharaji used to do.... That made me smile. Some throw this guy some mala beads for pete sake haha
It is one of the movements from Mussorgsky's piano composition, "Pictures at an Exhibition." If you sample the complete work on ITUNES you should hear which movement it is.
my dear people, does anyone know what book Ram Dass is talking about, he would give to prisoners to use their time awakening in prison? i understood "inside out" but there are just too many books called that. thank you.

It's true, haha though he still seemed like he didn't quite get it..
Yes, exactly, the interviewer is golden!
We go on .
This is what people should do in every day conversations. Don't judge, don't challenge. Just try to understand what others say to you:)

Absolutey spot on
You made four cold walls and a prison into a temple. Well done sir. You should read the count of Monte Cristo, but i suspect you have.
What did you do to be in prison?
Indeed. Nelson Mandela & Malcolm X are superlative examples of this... I'd highly recommend reading his biography.
Trevor D. thank you!
~ Pleasure and happiness is not the business I'm in. I'm in the business of freedom~
I love his comments becaused im tte same here!
We all have a vested interest in this phenomenall state of being. ❤ 🙏
One of my favorite interviews on youtube.
Those ending few seconds with Ram Dass’ reaction and his soft “Thank you Bernard”,was a perfect end to this terrific recording.
indeed
Lol yup
Yes!
Humility and respect.
Easily the most genuine "thank you" that I've ever seen. Not a sliver of ego behind the words
That was spectacularly eloquent. "If you say you don't think you're an enlightened man or teacher, you could have fooled me."
You are not enlightened if you admitted you are! If you find out they are they will not be around!
ua-cam.com/video/g2pe9gb8m5E/v-deo.html
I haven't heard anyone explain spirituality so clearly and in such a down-to-earth way. Also comes across as very likeable and approachable.
That is the nature of an enlightened being!
That's exactly why he touched so many of our hearts

"This is a form that is manifesting. You honour it, you take care of it, you keep it clean. And find out how it harmoniously expresses itself."
This interview (also the first part) is simply gold. Ram Dass ❤
Ram dass is talking about is the functional components of our consciousness. I just love the way he explains it ,so very precise and so clear.
No one does it so well.....👌
the most articulate Ive heard
He says he wasn't a guru, yet I carry him in my heart like he did his teacher.
Wow! Such a great interview. Love Ram Dass. I thank the late great Wayne Dyer as well, cause that is how I found out about Ram Dass. So much to learn from. ❤️
Check out Anita Moorjani who was also discovered by Wayne Dyer.
Interview in the darkness where Ram Dass is shining like the brightest star.

This man is absolutely brilliant. Thanks for sharing.
i am thank full to him. he explains us(indian) to western world very beautifully and very rationally
Except that truth or spirit it's neither Western nor Indian.
he doesn't explain us(Indians), he talks about non-duality which most of the Indians don't believe in or follow these days
I love when he says that he is only lying because truth has no form. I also feel that words can only tap on the border of what is beyond. Nothing in the realm of forms can portray the eternal laws of the formless, except when you view the variety of forms as one interlocking whole.
+Bobby Boulders That's deep and beautifully put.

Beautiful, beautiful interview. Thank you very much, Ram Dass.
His perfect understanding of all concepts is amazing, I wish a day will come when everyone and I realize the self
Would be so nice to have interviewers like this nowadays
I love you, Ram 💕
I love you Ram Dass❤️!
To go beyond forms to that place where identities fade and Higher Knowing resides -- a worthy quest.
You can do it too! Trust yourself you are a very powerful being!
"I'm not enlightened, I'm just working, like everybody else." Wisdom from the man himself

Ha ha ha. So did Einstein when he said my theories not coming from logical mind, Wasn’t he also either a crook or an idiot?
exquisite interview
Beautiful man of awareness
Out of all the compliments Ram Dass received through out his life the look on his face at the end says that closing one is up there

It is sad to see him years later after a stroke, how slow his thoughts are!
Not sure that would bother him, after listening to what he said in the video.
I feel like his words now are more refined and really tell the same message just in a more straightforward way
When that happened? Enlightenment comes with a price! Im confident he can handld it
Does anyone know the how I could find the piano music in the beginning of this video?
It is one of the movements from Mussorgsky's piano composition, "Pictures at an Exhibition." If you sample the complete work on ITUNES you should hear which movement it is.
CaptainAlsClassroom Thank you!
👍👍
he is awesome wha a face !!
Baba Ram Dass. What a Geezer ! Now off to research B Levin. He looked kind of awake.
Surely he will be after a tough interview words are powerful
Bernard Levin was a big English columnist. Interestingly ex-boyfriend of Arianna Stassinopoulos (now Huffington)
he's talking about the meaning of life itself. it's been figured out
It more deeper thsn life itself, there is no life for him.......metaphorically
my dear people, does anyone know what book Ram Dass is talking about, he would give to prisoners to use their time awakening in prison? i understood "inside out" but there are just too many books called that. thank you.
Great explanation but I believe his mentor never gave these words but made him experience much more. Self experience some times is hard to describe.
Glad ram dass found a way out early
