    So great to see people enjoying this lesson. My wife and I have twins coming soon, so it may be a while longer before I can get more videos out. But I'm hoping to release my Guitar Crash Course in early 2015. Stay tuned!

    Dude, let me tell you. I have been playing for over 20 years, and I was just lazy and didn't fee like figuring out the finger picking. I stumbled on this and realized it was just the strum, but I watched and you are so awesome. You are a great teacher and I wish I had you when I was starting out. Your advice on singing is the best. Peace and serenity be with you always. Thank you for putting this vibration into the world.

    I found your site many years ago and then drifted away from guitar (I wasn't a very good player) and playing music generally (uke, mandolin). For some reason one of my kids (as in 40 yr old kid) borrowed one of my guitars at Christmas and that sparked a new interest. I came across your site after looking for a version of Let Her Go by Passenger after hearing his new album "Live in San Francisco". Since I last played guitar the quality and quantity of video lessons on the net has improved immensely. I found this lesson to be amazingly good, and I have committed to learning the song and playing along. Believe you me as a non natural muso it's a challenge.

    Rob, This was sensational. I've looked at many lessons by people on here and I also purchased lessons from some of the people who have it to sell. You, however, stand out from the rest. The devil is in the details and you are detail oriented. You show the notes, how to strum, how to accent notes, how to sing, how to transition, when to hit the notes as the words are sung and so much more. It was a fact-filled 31 minutes! The others give a lesson but it's 1/3 the time you spend and therefor, 2/3's of what you give is never shared by the others. Please keep doing what you do. Make your name a household name. Nobody does it better than you. I appreciate the other teachers but you are the new benchmark for teaching.

    • @RobHampton
      @RobHampton 10 років тому

      Wow, Ray. I've gotten some nice comments on the two little videos I've put up, but this takes the cake. I know the lesson's long, and some folks have recommended I shorten them for the "UA-cam audience." It's good to hear that you appreciated the detail.

With God.

    I teach guitar to groups too, probably we share a lot in our methods. When I watched this video, I can really see that you are an effective teacher, who went through all the trouble with the many students, and know how to avoid them by approaching the topics in a very structured way, to minimize the chance for brain overload of students. You talk about freedom and courage for singing, and you actually show it in the end as well! I clapped my hands for you in the end, because during this 31 minutes you earned my full appreciation. You are the teacher I would recommend to everybody!

    I don't even play the guitar, but I found this video looking for a strumming pattern for my ukelele. I wasn't planning to stay for the whole half an hour but when I saw how well explained it was I ended up doing the whole tutorial. I had never seen a song this well explained, and beside chords positions being different it applies perfectly to any stringed instrument. I'll definitely watch more tutorials of this channel :)

    Great lesson. Probably one of the best I have seen here on you tube. One thing I have noticed across the board in the tutorial videos is that no one ever tells what speed or BPM to strum. We get an idea from listening but all songs are written to a certain BPM so as a beginner I would appreciate this information so I can have a goal slowly in creasing my speed till I get it correct. I practice strumming everyday with the metronome to increase my timing and rhythm so the correct BPM would be great to know. Thanks for the lesson.

    • @HeartwoodGuitarInstruction
      @HeartwoodGuitarInstruction  10 років тому

      Thanks for this suggestion. This song's at about 148 bpm. FYI, many metronomes (and metronome apps on smartphones) have a "tap tempo" tool that makes it super-easy to measure bpm. I use GuitarToolkit for its great tuner, and it also has a metronome with the tap tempo feature.

    GREAT lesson and I hope you continue with others songs in the great detail of this song. I think too many UA-cam lessons are too simplified for most beginners and only touch on chords and strumming as if it was a given and most don't need some type of coaching but we do, thanks again.

  • @billder999
    @billder999 11 років тому +1

    Hi Rob, I'm really happy to see you starting video lessons. The way you are doing this makes the lesson ULTRA clear... lots of work for you with all the graphics, etc! I like very much that you play the verse & chorus at the start, gives a feel for what you will teach. I also like the slow walk thru with a single strum per measure and tying into the lyrics. This video is good for a new beginner, but even then I think it is too long.
    For anyone but a new beginner, a few thoughts: (1) At 31 minutes the video is way too long...

    • @HeartwoodGuitarInstruction
      @HeartwoodGuitarInstruction  11 років тому

      Super-helpful. Most of your recommendations are things I was suspecting before I released the video. "It's a video, people can replay if they need to repeat"--great advice. Your advice about keeping the vocal section focused on specific technique for this song is also spot-on.

    • @songmule
      @songmule 11 років тому +1

      Heartwood Guitar Instruction
      I think for the beginners the 'out loud' verbalization of the strum sounds and the repetitions is GREAT, and works really well, provided the student ACTUALLY DOES IT! :) ...And sure, the rewinding WORKS, but can become tedious too.
      As was mentioned above, the singing section was too much for ONE lesson perhaps ( you have kinda like a micro-seminar on this one song:) ! ....but, that said, FANTASTIC PRESENTATION. I also own your book, and it's really well done so I'd expect a great job! Congrats. ..One thing: The graphics are a real nice touch, I'd love to know,is that a guitar software program, or screencast job? Love it!

    • @billder999
      @billder999 11 років тому

      Thanks Rob... I forgot to say I have long been a fan of your teaching approach. You find novel ways to communicate difficult tasks... I frequently return to your website for another way of looking at things when I am having difficulty with a song. Overall your approach to video teaching is different, more thorough, self reinforcing... I like your thinking very much, and you are likable (this is very important!... look at Marty and Justin... likability is key)

    • @HeartwoodGuitarInstruction
      @HeartwoodGuitarInstruction  11 років тому

      Dale Morgan So glad you dug the video, and thanks for the nice words about my book too. I'm happy how the graphics turned out too--I'm no graphic designer. I used Final Cut Pro for the text and for putting everything together. The chord diagrams I generated using a template I created in Photoshop Elements. I spent a day or two creating all the elements I needed in a chord diagram, and now I can make a new one in about 2 minutes.

    • @HeartwoodGuitarInstruction
      @HeartwoodGuitarInstruction  11 років тому

      billder999 Yeah, Marty and Justin are two big role models. One thing I want to work on is my, for lack of a better term, "default expression." Even though I'm up there having fun and feeling cheerful in front of the camera, I often look like I'm telling people their cat died--especially when I'm really concentrating on what I'm trying to say. Justin especially has a great default grin that makes him feel like an instant friend. So that's one of my big goals for the next video--let my cheerfulness show. Thanks for your kind words!
