Cancelled games have always fascinated the hell out of me. The mystery of what could have been has an undeniable allure to it. How many cancelled games would have gone on to be classics? We'll never know, and that's a real shame.
One i just remembered that i had massive hype for. Pirates of the Caribbean Armada of the Damned. It was supposed to be this Pirates game where you could become this handsom Pirate Hero or Supernatual villain if you so choose. Just the idea of playing a original Pirates of the Caribbean story where i could become a villain was just so crazy to me. But that game just died at some point.
The tv show "When Games Attack" (2004 or 05, hosted by Dominic Diamond) had an episode with Possession, where they showed gameplay, sound design stuff (guy smashing a water melon) and it looked really cool. Was hyped for that. Games like Dirt, and Starcraft Ghost too. Still think about these games from time to time too Jake 😔
I loved the Getaway and it’s dedication to designing the game with no HUD. I’d love a remake or a new game, getting around could be helped with a sat nav or phone maps
One game that stuck with me is B.C by Peter Molyneux. I remember seeing it and wanting to play it right away. The concept and the short trailer / images they had revealed had me excited about the game for a while...... To this day I still think about it and wish it existed. Honestly thinking about it more, the fact that you only really got to see it via magazines or g4 tv was what really made it exciting. Always something new to look forward to when receiving the new Xbox magazine or if you got lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the g4 episode where they would showcase new info. With today's technology, everything is at our finger tip via our phones. I really do miss those days when you had to wait for the next magazine or g4 episode and rely on your imagination of how the game would potentially be like is really what made it exciting.
One cancelation that hurt me when I found out about it was the Legacy of Kain game they were working on towards the end of the 360/PS3 era. It was going to take place where Kain and Raziel were traveling through time so they were absent in the world. You played as a guy who gets murdered by a vampire and then possess his body, sharing it with the vampire's consciousness. I'm pretty sure when it was cancelled, the work was transitioned to Shadow of Mordor.
@@tube154you it definitely was an interesting concept. We got something similar with Shadow of Mordor though. I don't really want a legacy of Kain without Kain.
That's why I was so stoked for Demonic because it looked like it handled like the blood omen game for the Xbox. I really need some demonik in my life!!! I wish that was a thing! I hope at the very least one day we get a Soul Reaver/Legacy of Kain game.
Deep down. Also, One Night Left? The Last Night? I don't remember what it was called but it was a neat looking pixle art game on steam a few years back. Always love your content man. It's very natural in this weird modern youtube world, which is refreshing.
Possession featured in an early Xbox 360 magazine, and I always wondered what happened to it. Thank you for scratching an itch I’ve had for nearly 20 years!
Awesome topic. Some really great picks there. I also was excited for Demonik, and was bummed that Grandma’s Boy was the last we saw of it. The games that I often think about and lament never getting to play due to cancellation would be Dead Rush and The Lost. Read a big magazine reveal story on Dead Rush back in the day, but it didn’t seem to last much beyond that. And I remember being SO pumped for The Lost, even proudly hanging a poster for it that I got in some game magazine in the early 000’s. Then…nothing. Cancelled and cast aside. Sad days.
Oh man, I remember seeing The Gauntlet, but I only saw that last scene with the approach to the courthouse and that just was such a crazy intense scene. I've never gotten it out of my head completely.
There was a Korean developed game called Huxley back in the day. It was supposed to be a FPS/MMORPG. It looked really cool and sounded way before its time.
Damn I forgot about that one, Huxley was a big one I was hyped for. I'm most affected by Project-Offset being canceled by Intel after they acquired it and overestimated their own hardware, people at Intel were trying to help the team get their game back, but whatever higher up at Intel apparently didn't find it profitable enough to spend their time on. Some of the team created Fractiv or went to work on Hawken.
Just watched this video 2 months after it first came on. And that's the first game that came to mind. I was following that game so much. I wanted to play it so bad. Pissed me off when they announced it got cancelled.😢😢😢
The Darkness 3 is still one of my most wanted sequels. Imagine if they made the sequel come out of no where with an up to date engine (similar to how STALKER did).
Honestly with the amount of seemingly solid rumors about rocksteady’s Superman game and then never hearing about it only to see this horrible looking suicide squad game from them will always make me sad (unless it’s an amazing game)
I’ll never forget about the XCOM remake trailer that they did years ago. It was a 2K games trailer on IGN back in like 2010. It looked so cool for the time. Almost like a survival horror fps against black ooze alien creatures. I remember being so hyped. But it ended up being XCOM: declassified and looking nothing like the trailer did
For me it would be Starcraft: Ghost. Something about a third person SC game and getting to have a better sense of scale of the buildings / units as well as getting to be a stealthy person in the universe sounded SO cool!
I still love Grandma's Boy. It's a guilty pleasure without a doubt. I can't tell you how many times I've joked with friends about car beds, or if they could see me or not.
I got one title like that, it buggs me for years now: The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. It was supposed to be something like "Max Payne", but with supernatural twist, with more "horror" approach. There were some amazing artworks flying, Lance Henriksen and Tim Curry in the cast and it looked so cool, that I still can't get over it. Also, thanks for cool video (this one and much more others)!
My mind was blown when you put up the first image of possession. I was just thinking, right after you presented demonic "that dude kinda looks like that one obscure game I used to see random videos on youtube like 15 years ago" and I was like "I'm never going to remember how it was called. Let alone be able to google it" seconds later you just blew my mind. Thank you for saving me hours of non stop thinking of how I could google that one very specific game.
I dare not hope but the game hasn't been officially cancelled. Capcom renewed the trademark in 2018, and even when the project lead left in 2019 he said work would continue. If it does exist it probably went through an overhaul... a lot has changed since it was originally announced in 2013. And I really do wish it exists.
I regularly think of that “Deep Down” game that was shown off alongside the PS4 showcase in 2013. It’s not officially cancelled but is vaporware, and I regularly think about it because at the time I thought graphics could never get better than that.
I remember being 9 or 10 playing demo for Psi: ops and i think the game came out and it had potential but never went anywhere sadly, would love to see you cover it!
Great list! The Demonik and Dirty Harry games were a serious trip down memory lane. The music in the Demonik trailer still rules. These are the weird cancelled games I still think about: - P.T. (not much to say, I think we all have it on our list, so I'll just get it out of the way) - Eight Days (a cancelled PS3 game, the trailer was absolutely insane - like Killzone 2 levels of "there's no way this trailer is real") - Killing Day (another PS3 game, looked a lot like the Hardcore Henry movie) - THEY (sci-fi FPS with aliens and an insane amount of weapon customization - the studio cancelled it and made the Witcher 2 instead) - Redwood Falls (it was supposed to be some sort of survival horror game that takes place in a snowy, mountainous region)
P.T. wasn't a game it was a demo for a future Kojima Silent Hill game, it literally stands for 'Playable Teaser', yes I know it was removed, and Silent Hills was cancelled, but calling P.T. itself a cancelled game isn't accurate. I'm sure Jake has plenty to say about the cancelled Silent Hills given Kojima's involvement and how it ultimately led to his own studio!
Harker! It was a game where you played Jonathan Harker from Bram Stokers "Dracula" slaying vampires. It was a Double Helix and The Collective game. I remember this game from time to time and wish it had actually got finished.
LMNO was a game by Steven Spielberg that was being made at the same time as PQRS. PQRS ended up being BoomBlox for the Wii, while LMNO, a game about a group of people with supernatural powers being hunted by a CIA like agency, was (of course) cancelled.
Sleeping Dogs 2 hurts still because that first game was so underrated!! Marc Ecko’s Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure aswell was supposed to have a sequel which was cancelled I believe! That first game was so good!
As soon as I read the title I thought of Possession and Im stoked to see its on the list. That game had kid me super curious and I remember I kept googling for it years later only to be disappointed nothing more came out of it than that short clip.
YES...demonik. I remember I had a magazine that came out a few months before the 360. The whole mag was a luanch issue for the console and they had all the games that were in development for it. And seeing it in grandma's boy I was like ahhh man this is never coming out...smh
That egyptian exploration game by the creators of firewatch... in the valley of gods, once the studio got bought by valve the development froze and i think developing half life alyx got it cancelled
Dead Rush getting the axe was one of the most crushing cancellations I can remember. Trailer is still on youtube, probably hasn't aged well, but at the time I couldn't wait.
The mysterious Guillermo Del Toro game. I believe it was called Insane? Or Asylum? Also dead rush a zombie gta clone. I also remember the original trailer for call of cthulu being way different and set in modern day with magic powers. Pretty sure that got changed into dark corners of the earth. I think there was a Mace Griffon bounty hunter sequel too. But I can't remember if that got a trailer or not. Also Taxi Driver weirdly enough had a game at one point.
With all the recent leaks of cancelled games (Duke Nukem Forever 2001 build, Goldeneye XBLA back in 2021, prototype/demos of Dreamcast/Xbox OG games, etc) I always wonder how much time we'll be waiting if Demonik ever finds it way onto the internet some day. The game always looked so fun to play from Grandma's Boy. Hell, even the trailers.
Ya know, I STILL wish for a 2nd part to the Getting Up game. It was pretty great for its time, and the soundtrack is something I still listen to and use for workouts!
I might be crazy but I distinctly recall hearing about a second Getting Up game being in the works. A weird memory of a poster at e3 one year but no gameplay.
Whenever someone mentions canceled games, I think of Rockstar Games 'Agent'. It was supposed to be Rockstar Games spy game. It was announced as an exclusive for PlayStation 3, but nothing came of it after the announcement. It was a bummer for me, because I've always loved games made by R*.
I really think Demonic could've been an xbox icon in a different universe and possibly a couple remasters. I thought they made the game specifically for the movie lol
I remember following ‘This is Vegas’ quite closely back in the day. Looked like somewhere between GTA and the getaway actually. Sad to see that fade away. Reminds me of ‘Eight days’ too, also by London studio. I still remember the demo now. ‘Wild’ as well for ps4, that one was painful because it looked fun 😢 Great vid Jake!
I was really pumped for Thrill Kill. I followed it for quite some time and was like wtf when they canceled it. Interstate 77 was also another canceled one I was looking forward to cause Interstate 82 was not it lol.
Thrill Kill did get "released" though. Not officially, of course, but I remember playing a leaked version of it back in the day. It was pretty rough, but sorta fun. Anyways, you can find a rom of it today to play in like Duckstation, or any other PS1 emulator.
I know Capcom hasn't technically canceled it, and it was probably just a tech demo for what would become Monster Hunter World, but I still think about Deep Down. At least we are getting Dragons Dogma 2 so ill settle for that.
Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy 2 I remember seeing unused gameplay for what I think was going to be a sequel to this highly underrated game from the PS2 days.
Hey man I'm just glad that you still think about some of those games that very few if not other people like you may still think about out there somewhere... Those games are old and all of that
Hey, thanks, you helped me spot a game I had forgotten the name of, but had seen a trailer for as a kid. Although sadly it was cancelled eons ago, but still, I can scratch the itch.
I’ve been watching a lot of Lost Media videos recently, it’s a very interesting topic to talk about, specially when it comes to videogames! - Telltale’s Stranger Things - Phantom Dust Remake - A weird game titled LMNO - The Last Night (maybe still in production)
This is such a great video idea. The one that sticks out to me the most is the Indiana Jones Xbox game but I guess really never did get canceled but I remember being so blown away by that trailer where they were showing off their euphoria engine and stuff
For me one game that I was actually super excited for when I first heard about it in an old issue of Game Informer from when the PS3 and the Xbox 360 were still pretty new. It was a Highlander video game that since I'm a huge fan of the first Highlander movie (or as I jokingly call it, the only Highlander movie) I thought was super cool and I would do what I could to find scraps of news about it, only to discover that it was cancelled. I don't know why and probably never will, but I think it would've been pretty awesome. I guess when it came to fans of the idea, there can be only one, and it was me lol
I still regularly think about Demonik, i think that game could still work today tbh, playing as a demon possessing people and wreaking havoc, harvesting souls n shit
There was a game that was supposed to come out on the original Xbox called Strident: The Shadow Front. From the developers of Kingdom Under Fire. It looked like a futuristic , Cyberpunk MGS style stealth game, where you played a female cyborg. It looked really cool too, the trailer is still on UA-cam
Not weird but from top of my head I can point at: 1. Silent Hills (by Kojima & Del Toro) 2. Resident Evil 4 (Hallucination Version) 3. Half-Life 2 Episode 4: Return to Ravenholm (by ARKANE) 4. DOOM 4 (that wanted to be scary like DOOM 3)
Funny that you made this video. I was literally thinking about the Highlander game that was announced back in 2008. I loved those movies and it seemed pretty ambitious. I'd love for that game to make a comeback somehow.
DUDE POSSESSION WAS A GAME I WAS THINKING ABOUT THE OTHER DAY. i just couldn’t think of what it was called but i remember seeing youtube videos of like tech demos. i think it involves the euphoria engine or something like that?
Grandma's boy is a classic and that game always stuck out in my memory. It looked like a unofficial sequel or spiritual successor to Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy. At least that's how it looked like it played. I never knew it was a real game and just assumed it was a mod of psi-ops or something made exclusively for grandma's boy.
I remember seeing Demonik when we saw Grandma’s Boy back in the day. When I saw the footage I remembered being intrigued. I knew it was a real game cause it would have taken too much time and money to make that footage for a movie. So I looked into it and I was interested. A game where you play a demon who goes after evil souls meant for damnation. That it likely had mechanics like that Shiny Entertainment game Messiah where ya possess people to sneak into areas of the game etc. It was a shame when I found out it was cancelled.
This game was not canceled and sadly it did eventually come out. It was first teased in Game Informer in March 2008. I read that article at least 20 times. I was hyped for the game and it looked amazing. Instead of what was described and envisioned in the article instead we got Aliens: Colonial Marines. I still think about an alien game similar to GTFO. A scary survival squad shooter. In my heart it was canceled.
Probably doesn't count since I don't think it was ever actually worked on, BUT in an item description in Age of Mythology, there was a reference to a sequel that was never made. Having played that game to death is a kid as one of my only PC games, I spent years looking forward to the sequel the never was.
JAKE YOU MENTIONED OVERLORD! Legit thought I was the only person who knew, heard or remembered that game. Got it for a tenner out a bargain bin back in the day and lost myself

YES...demonik. I remember I had a magazine that came out a few months before the 360. The whole mag was a luanch issue for the console and they had all the games that were in development for it. And seeing it in grandma's boy I was like ahhh man this is never coming out...smh
GamePro was the magazine. 👍🤘💯
I remember that game! I was super excited for it after reading an article about it in Game Informer... and it just vanished.
I love how you just open your true, unfiltered nerd soul to the world here.
Sometimes before bed I think about Star Craft Ghost.
Funny thing about Demonic I think it turned into Legacy of Kain or Psi Ops
Ghost is legit a legendary game. And I’m not even sure it ever got a release date.
If I’m not mistaken, I believe they’re working on a movie.
This video fucked me up with all the unlocked memories.
Man, I completely. forget about the Gateway franchise until you touched on black monday👀
Bro you’re blowing my mind grandmas boy is one of my favorite movies still watch it quite often and I never knew demonic was a real game at one point.
If i'm being honest, the cancelation of Scalebound still hurts to this day
I would’ve gotten an Xbox for that game
On bro
That game was literally the only reason I was gonna get an Xbox for but since it never came out, I never got an xbox😆.
Makes me wanna know if it was in any demo discs I don't think it made it that far but if it did that would be awsome
‘Wild’ as well for ps4, that one was painful because it looked fun 😢
Great vid Jake!
I was really pumped for Thrill Kill. I followed it for quite some time and was like wtf when they canceled it. Interstate 77 was also another canceled one I was looking forward to cause Interstate 82 was not it lol.
Agreed
Thrill Kill did get "released" though. Not officially, of course, but I remember playing a leaked version of it back in the day. It was pretty rough, but sorta fun. Anyways, you can find a rom of it today to play in like Duckstation, or any other PS1 emulator.
@Tom Andersen . Oh I had heard about that but figured it was fake or awful
All of these Jake, plus 'Project Offset'. The Medieval FPS that was hyped as movie quality graphics. It's what convinced my buddy to build a PC.
I know Capcom hasn't technically canceled it, and it was probably just a tech demo for what would become Monster Hunter World, but I still think about Deep Down. At least we are getting Dragons Dogma 2 so ill settle for that.
Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy 2
I remember seeing unused gameplay for what I think was going to be a sequel to this highly underrated game from the PS2 days.
Snooooooooop!
Super rough night at work. It's awesome to get home and listen to some dude talk about games before I go to sleep. Thanks, dude

Hey man I'm just glad that you still think about some of those games that very few if not other people like you may still think about out there somewhere... Those games are old and all of that
Bro you're bringing back so many memories. Love this channel and gameranx, top quality gaming content.
Discovered your channel from SkillUp and the podcast. Great stuff my man. Love the channel
Thanks! Good to know. Glad you’re here
Hey, thanks, you helped me spot a game I had forgotten the name of, but had seen a trailer for as a kid. Although sadly it was cancelled eons ago, but still, I can scratch the itch.
I know they never officially announced a 3rd Darkness game. But man, i wish they would make a new Darkness game.
I’ve been watching a lot of Lost Media videos recently, it’s a very interesting topic to talk about, specially when it comes to videogames!
- Telltale’s Stranger Things
- Phantom Dust Remake
- A weird game titled LMNO
- The Last Night (maybe still in production)
This is such a great video idea. The one that sticks out to me the most is the Indiana Jones Xbox game but I guess really never did get canceled but I remember being so blown away by that trailer where they were showing off their euphoria engine and stuff
Ooph, you got me Jake. I always think about Demonik and still hope for something similar to that to come out.
🤞🏼
I agree 100%! It has always baffled me why someone hasn't picked it up!
Not weird but from top of my head I can point at:
1. Silent Hills (by Kojima & Del Toro)
2. Resident Evil 4 (Hallucination Version)
3. Half-Life 2 Episode 4: Return to Ravenholm (by ARKANE)
4. DOOM 4 (that wanted to be scary like DOOM 3)
Fantastic vid, Jakiepoo. I always wondered if they actually made a rough game for Grandma’s Boy😂😂
I loved The Getaway too! I would be down to go back to the London under belly. Blood and Truth looks great though!
I still think about Highlander. Can’t remember the magazine I saw the previews in but it looked awesome.
The taxi driver game, Akira the game, and the tremors game.
That game was in GamePro Magazine around the launch of the 360. Before Grandmas Boy came out.
Demonik really hit me hard I was super hyped for it to release then it just melted into the aether never to be seen again.
A memory of most of these games have been unlocked. Thank you sir! Looking forward to the Godfather video coming out soon?
I had no idea the game from Grandma's Boy was real! That movie was a hit for me in college.
Demonic!! Jake were the same age and you never cease to share similar memories putting a smile on my face 😂😂
I love the game Demonic, "dude your beds a car." "Yeah but it's a f****** sweet car"- Grandma's Boy
Grandmas boy is straight up one of the best comedy movies of all time. Never gets old
Bro there was so much stuff here that I had never seen or heard about back then thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for the brief, unsolved mysteries theme. You had going there for a moment! Made my day!
The Alien rpg Obsidian was doing and the Stargate SG1 fps. Both are games I wish had been made and I still watch UA-cam videos on them to this day.
