  • Official music video. Internal Exile by Fish from the album Internal Exile.
"I was inspired to write the lyric to this song in 1988 when I was in Scotland in residential writing sessions at Dalnaglar castle on the edge of the Scottish Highlands attempting to put together an album that would never happen with my then band Marillion. It was the first time since 81 when I joined the band that I'd spent longer than a few days in Scotland and I was meeting and talking to a lot of old friends who reacquainted me with nationalist politics. At the time it was a period of turbulence and passion as Margaret Thatcher was in power and Scotland was designated as the testing ground for the newly proposed controversial Poll Tax after having fatally damaged the coalmining, shipbuilding and steel making industries in previous years. I was caught up in the fervour and on moving back to Scotland in late 1988 I found my writing strongly influenced by the situation developing around me. The song was completed in the Summer of 1989 and although recorded for my first solo album "Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors" was held back and rerecorded to become the title track of my second album released in 1991. At this same time the SNP were putting together a concerted campaign that had a conservative government, now under John Major worried about the forthcoming election in April 92. "Internal Exile" was released as a lead single on the 9th September 1991 and alienated some of my fan base and the general media who saw the song as too political and a minority construing it as "anti English" which it was never intended to be. It was and is a pro Scottish song and I stand by these lyrics to this day. The song didn't receive much airpay at the time either North or South of the Border and I was told it was unofficially banned on some stations because of the sentiments.
In 1992 the hoped for swing from the Labour vote to the SNP didn't happen the Conservatives triumphed and John Major was again Prime Minister. Nothing changed.
I don't expect it to get much airplay these days either but as a song that illustrated my personal feelings then and my opinion now, neither of which have changed over the last 13 years and more, I thought I would put this clip up on You Tube for the first time at the same time as my official statement on my stance on the independence referendum is released."

The fact that this song was slated as being anti english because it told the truth should tell you one thing... you're doing it right.
This song was unlikely to get major radio airplay in the 90's anyway, at this point in time the charts were full of dance songs and boy bands, and this was too "out of the box" to get the recognition it deserved. Nothing has changed right up to this day, hard working artists get ignored, whilst the talent-less, one minute wonders that cowell and the other pop-pap producers continue to churn out get all the limelight.
Quality music doesnt need airplay. Your music will be remembered for what it is now, and what it always will be. Poetry set to music, with a story to tell. I for one cant imagine my life without your music in it, nor do i wish to, and the fact that so many other echo those sentiments, should be a great source of pride to yourself and all those who have contributed to your music.

Dear Fish, thanks for sharing your thoughts on this song. To be honest, I'm really glad this kind of music never happened with Marillion and you took your pop ideas to be completed on your own. Sure, it's a nice little song you can move your leg to while working but I can't imagine listening to it at home. Marillion was always all prog to me and I really don't get it why spoil the mood with shallow, uninspired songs like Lavender, Incommunicado or Hooks In You (so that you know I'm not taking hits at you personally). Looking at your solo catalogue, I'm really glad you never forced most of those ideas into Marillion. You don't need a prog band anymore when you're done with the genre, do you? Anwyay, I really liked your recent album and, while it still has its "incommunicados" (I wish All Loved Up never made it to the album) I think it's a rather well arranged and inspired piece of work. Too bad Frank wasn't there to aid you, still not pleased with the guitar work there. Otherwise, a really good album. Keep it up!

Fish talks about his new album 'a feast of consequences' and gives a preview. In my opinion this new album [as can be seen from the title] is overblown and pretentious. The artwork mentioned is far inferior to the artwork on 'script for a jester's tear' and 'misplaced childhood.' In my opinion it's a shame that Fish has become 'up himself' I know many will disagree but I am sad to see one of the finest vocalists of all time reduced to this....

suilven mountain This video is from his second album - not A Feast of Consequences.
Of course, if you'd actually read the description right underneath the video you might have spotted the words "I was inspired to write the lyric to this song in 1988 when..."

Regarding your comment 'sad to see one of the finest vocalists of all time reduced to this.... .
I'm sorry you feel this way. Blind to the Beautiful is, beautiful. The song A Feast of Consequences is a bit close for comfort and The Other Side Of Me is just bliss to listen too. I'm not sure why you think it's pretentious, the new artwork is just different. I love it, but I respect that everyone has their own opinion ..... happy listening :)

Agreed - I don't want to get into an argument about opinions but I think that Fish's interpretation of the battle of High Wood, the Somme battlefield and WWI in general is also so very far from pretentious. Talking about "A Feast of Consequences" as a whole album - I find it hard to think of any moment that could be considered in this way. It's moving, genuine and sublime in so many places. The exact opposite in fact. Alright, maybe "All Loved Up" could be considered pretentious - but that's the protagonist of the song. If that irony is lost on you then I do feel that you've missed the point entirely.

Too low quality for today: 2014. The videos with Queen has only 2 miljon views when they could have 50 - 100 miljon each or more...... This is tv format of early 80´s quality. Worse quality than MTV ever had. Go HD now. Better use the right original master to do high quality music videos and attract a new audiance and sell more records. This video are the best there is but the audiance I am thinking of is the whole world and all ages. They won´t take the time to watch UA-cam music videos in 360 low quality..

This was filmed in 1991 and we didn't have the option of HD. The master will not be significantly different to this on You Tube
