  • Korg M3 with Behringer FCB1010
Here I will explain how I got the Korg M3 Workstation to work with the Behringer FCB1010 midi foot controller to change the Karma Scenes on the Korg using the buttons on the FCB1010, the board I have has the added UNO chip fitted v1.0.2f.
I previously shared a video showing how you can change sounds from, for example, a piano to an organ, on the M3 without having the piano sound cutting off when you select the organ, this allows for a smooth transition between the two sounds, and the beauty is that it can be for any of the sounds on the m3 keyboard, piano, strings, brass, guitars, synth etc or even multiple sounds plying together can be changed to other multiple or single sounds such as piano and strings together changing to brass and bass together, once again without any cutting off of the sounds, The Karma Scene on the Korg M3 is very powerful and yet so easy to program, now we take it a step further by adding the Behringer FCB1010 midi foot controller to the Korgs MIDI in / out and this means that we can change between the scenes using the foot pedal so we don’t have to lift our hands from the keyboard whilst we are playing.
The programming of this unit is very complex as it, like the Korg m3, can do hundreds of different functions for many different scenarios.
So I will only run through the sequence of events that we need without trying to explain the ins and outs of what each different section does as we pass through it,
First task, we switch on the Korg m3 and press the Global button
We select global page 1, midi, and as the Behringer is usually set at midi1 that’s what we need the m3 to be set at as well so that they can talk to each other,
Next we need to adjust the cc numbers on the m3 which are currently set at zero. Press global page 2 controllers, press cc assign near the bottom left, then at the top top right we want the drop down menu, select
Reset controller midi assign, from the next drop down box we want to select Cc default,
To save this we need to write global setting using the top right drop down box,
    Now to the fcb1010
We need to make sure stomp box mode is on the upper section using buttons 6 to 0 and that the lower section buttons 1 to 5 are available for our Karma Scene changes, to do this we start with the unit powered off,
By the way. No midi cables need to be connected, you can do all this programming of the Behringer away from the keyboard if you want, you only need the behringer unit for now,
Press and hold the down button and at the same time turn the Behringer power on.
Keep the down button pressed until the unit enters into its global mode,
Now we need to set it so that only lights 5 8 and 9 are lit up.
To turn a buttons light on you press and hold that button, to turn a buttons light off you press and hold that button, it’s quite simple, so if all the lights come on then just hold the button of the lights we don’t want on until they go off, and visa versa if you need to switch a light on, so after we do this we now get to the stage where only buttons 5 8 and 9 are lit up, HOLD the down button to save and exit
When we program the Behringer we either tap on, or hold down, the buttons for a few seconds to make changes, so I will say tap or hold in future.
You can select any of the ten banks of the FCB1010, I’m using bank 1 in the video but they’re all the same so it’s your choice
Now we are ready to program the switches 1 to 4 to make them change the karma scenes on the Korg m3,
A, Let’s start by selecting the first switch number 1, tap 1 to light it up,
Hold the down button for a few seconds,
Make sure only 4 and 5 are lit up then tap up to save and continue,
Now we need all the lights to be off, if any are on you need to turn them off now and then tap up,
For the next step we want to light up buttons number 1 6 7 8 9
Then tap 6 again so that it flashes, tap up
B, Type 30 and press up
    Type 0 and press up
    Type 0 and press up
Hold down to save all the settings.
Now we are going to repeat a lot of these stages to program buttons two three and four,
For button 2 start at A but press number 2 instead of 1, then continue all the steps, when you get to step B, these are the new numbers we are going to select, instead of 30, 0, 0 it’s going to be
30, 1, 0, then hold down to save,
For button 3 you input these figures, 30, 2, 0
    and finally for button 4 its 30, 3, 0
    Then hold down to save
This should do all four karma scene changes when connected to the Korg M3, this will be similar for other keyboards, it’s tricky to understand at first if you are new to midi programming like I am, but through trial and error and a lot of online reading sits on the specific keyboard you’re using me the FCB1010 uno instructions you can eventually figure it out,
Jackcaps are on eBay or Facebook if you would like any to protect your equipment from dirt and debris. They start at around 25p so are super cheap,
    All the best, Brendan, JackCap.
