    You're going to have to aerate the water. You can put up a wind mill paddle system that will stir the water enough, but you may do better to use a commercial system. Most of your catfish and bottom fish may make it through. But aeration in the summer and fall is absolutely necessary if there is NO WIND.

      @@marciasanderlin7924 It's HYPOXIA... hot water holds less oxygen than cold water. If a lake is still, and the wind doesn't blow and agitate the water adding oxygen, then those fish that can't tolerate lower oxygen or the lack of O2 will die first. When they die, they usually rot, and that causes anaerobic bacteria to flourish, lowering the O2 level even more and making the whole pond die out. Dan may have to start all over.

  • @davidwolf2478
    @davidwolf2478 18 днів тому +24

    If you start over there are a lot of changes that you should make to your pond.
    Make your pond a lot deeper so it stays cooler.
    And a bunch of aquatic plants for oxygen, along with a wind mill with pipes that pump oxygen into the water.
    Clean cut an area so the pond can receive more wind.
    Make a schedule for testing the pH and fertilize if necessary.

    As a ichthyologist but not studying North American fish I would put your problem down to a mix of the controlled burn you did earlier and the tornado then heat and just bad luck. The ash ect from the burn then the rain lining the base of the bottom of the pond and then that not letting the weeds grow as much if at all and then that not giving off the oxergen into the water. What I would do is punch a hole in the dam dry it out and start again if you haven't had to aerate the pond before then I doutb it was just that

    That is really heartbreaking, those were some good bass! I'd have to do a walk around and see if something has been introduced through the inflow. Another suggestion would be solar pumps with sprinkler heads, Oklahoma gets plenty of sunlight to power them. Several small ones could possibly work better than 1 or 2 large pumps. They will cool and oxygenate the water. I hope whatever you decide to try workswell. As a fisherman, this stings! Ouch!!!
    Edit: Possible quik fix here. Back the new boat into the water far enough to get the prop in the water good. Crank er up and let it rip with the trim up so that it's spraying a big roostertail. You'll have tons of oxygen in the water fast, cool it down and get it moving around all at the same time.

    My grandpa had a catfish pond that had a fish kill one year. It was around 1988 and it was super dry here in Alabama. He was having to use his tractor with the bucket to rake and scoop them off the bank as my dad and grandma drug nets to clear the surface. . He did that for 3 days. He buried them in the pastures and then a few years later planted a garden there that did phenomenal. His pond recovered in a couple years.
    I dont pretend to know what happened there with the fishI just hope that something great comes from this devastation!❤

    If it's oxygen depletion....most ponds around my area use wind driven aerators that float on the water surface to prevent this kind of fish kill.

    You need to get a pond O2 tester and a pond water test kit and keep track of it from now on. and I think the Ichthyologist is write and you should start over, from the bottom up. and this will let you make it as big as you like. And clean the ash off the bottom.

    For those fish to die so quickly over a 5 day period is strange to say the least, as someone commented have the water tested right away. If it's a contaminate it could work its way into the creek both by the animals and where the swimming hole/dam is. Stay safe and so sorry to see this.

    When I saw the reel yesterday, I wondered about the oxygen levels with the heat. Seeing the water line indicates a huge volume loss. . .evaporation. Some fish do not tolerate the changes in pH balance. The pond did not have time to recover after the flooding, fluctuations of pH level too quickly

  • @moviemakerwannabe

    With the algae blooms we had in our stock tanks it was mainly the bigger fish that died. The young fish and smaller fish lived. I don't know if that information will help with the mystery but I hope so.

    My heart broke seeing how hard it is for Houston and him wanting to save as many as possible. I would be doing that exact thing. In fact I have waded into flooded ditches to catch fish that got out of the ponds and put them back. It was quite an adventure but saving some made me feel better.

    We have a 2 acre pond that had a major fish kill to crop duster who accidentally sprayed our pond . We watched it happen and was able to get the plane marking and we reported it to DRN. We found all of our 3+foot grass carp, blue gill and cat fish floating.
    Good luck with you clean up.

    My family goes fishing before every summer heatwave, clean the fish and pack them in the freezers. They minimize the fishkill the old way. Planted lots of tall trees on the southern and western side of the pond last year which helped extend the fishing season. A subsurface and surface aerator installment is next, but taking a propeller motorboat ride through the pond when there is no wind in the air also aerates the pond, believe it or not.

    I feel so bad I've been watching your videos a lot lately trying to learn something and it sucks that so many fish died so hopefully it is not too expensive to restock the pond, I felt so bad when Houston said "what happened to our fish" and his face looked so sad, this pond obviously means so much to you guys.

    I'm so sorry about your pond killing off the fish. When we get that problem here in western Florida, it's often from an algae bloom. Then everyone has to keep their dogs out of the area because they get sick and some even die. Is Kelce okay? It may be a good idea for her to get a checkup at the vet. People get sick from it too. Have you had anyone come to check out the pond and run some tests on the water? This is so sad. I am truly sorry for you guys. Perhaps you have gotten some good rain from the remnants pf the hurricane. But with all of the dead fish still in the pond, I don't know how much the rain will help. Sending up prayers, love and gentle hugs for the whole family and all of your critters, Donna Gulyas in Spring Hill, Florida.

    Have to wonder if the flooding after the tornado and recently may have stirred up the silt layer in the bottom of the pond. The fish basically suffocate in the silt. At least you have the lake you can continue to fish in.

    I can't remember if you guys have said if there's any sort of natural spring near the pond, but if there is, then you could do some sort of irrigation or small aqueduct to make it elevated above the top of the lake. That would give you aeration without needing a power source. Or you could go with some sort of windmill, provided you get some sort of breeze regularly enough.

    I'd definitely get your water tested. Possibly look at what is happening upstream from your pond? Something could be leaching into the water. Short term get some aeration system going. Just some of my limited experience in helping to take care of my dad's pond.

  • @pdm1289
    @pdm1289 18 днів тому +1

    With the reported depth of your pond, the most likely cause is a sudden pond water inversion. You can dredge your pond to get rid of the muck and mud and get it deeper. You can bust your dam and drain your pond to deepen and reshape your pond. The later is more expensive but in the long run it is probably the wiser and most productive option. Ponds that hold 30’ of water rarely run into inversion problems. Of course if you go to all the trouble and work of deepen the pond, adding aeration only makes sense.
