I have such great memories of this from my childhood. It's crazy to think that this and Pitfall 2 were pioneering context-sensitive musical scores on the Atari in 1983.

There's no song here, actually. These are mangled excerpts from Edvard Grieg's "Peer Gynt", Op.23. It is by far his most famous work, and contains at least 4 super-famous melodies in it that are known even to people who don't listen to older music.

The track that plays after he gets the crown is more commonly referred to as "In the Hall of the Mountain King", hence the title of the game. :)

I've never played this game (let alone owned an Atari system) but what I like the most about this game is its really good 8-bit rendition of "In the Hall of the Mountain King".

Lord Karnage almost became a super sayan trying to finish this one
Due to the limits of the Atari 2600. The bats can only appear one at a time. Therefore, it is always best to have easy access between two levels and avoid tunnels.
This also came out for some other systems, like the C64, Atari 8-bit, 5200, Colecovision, etc. The jumping is much more forgiving in those versions, however if I remember correctly, the bats are harder to see (practically invisible), making it harder to avoid them. Plus, the music that guides you to the flame is done best in the 2600 version. In all the others, the range is much more limited, so it's harder to follow since it doesn't just get gradually louder as you get closer to the flame.
The 2600 version also has something no other version has; A super-jump. Jump and keep the joystick pressed diagonally. When you land, you'll take off on a super jump that seems to last forever. In fact if you take a super jump off the top of the mountain with the flame, headed left, the game will eventually glitch and put ladders and platforms in mid air. If you time it just right, you can land on them and go exploring. Shining the flashlight will sometimes make these platforms change or disappear. If you fall off, you fall a LONG way. :)

One of my top favorite Atari 2600 games. Knowing what to do and knowing the area. Mastering the poor jumping skills. The sounds are important in this game. Get the crown and race to the top at the shortest and the fastest way as possible. Glad that you made it to the top.
RAM plus is basically just 16- 32Kb of additional Memory in the cartridge. As simple as the game looks, it is slightly more advance than some of the other 2600 Cartridges and does put some additional sprites on screen and allows for some slow scrolling.
No, RAM+ is an extra 256 bytes of RAM. Mountain King in particular is also a 12K game, like's Atari's 8K games with three ROM banks instead of two. You can read about the Atari bankswitching schemes from back in the day here: kevtris.org/files/sizes.txt .
Mountain King on the c64 was my first memory of a video game.
The real treasure is beyond the mountain. Ever heard of Glitch Heaven? It's like the Twilight Zone up there.
This is that game that the Nerd covered in his Glitch video with the "Glitch Heaven" isn't it?
It's very nice, the screen actually scrolls in all directions which was pretty rare at the time... (Unless this is one of those games that came out in the early 90s for some reason)

I think this is the maddest I've ever seen Mark get at a video game.
I was unimpressed with the game at first but later I actually started to really like it.. Then again I was a child so I probably wouldn't like it now by today's standards.. Music was amazing for an Atari cart..
I used to play this a lot on my Atari 800....looks way better and much more fun. Had to play it after watching and beat the first level in about 10 minutes.
Had this game for the 5200, the controller is perfect for this game!!!! Got to try it.

Weird... so the berries vanish after you sit on the little flame guy? That didn't happen in the version for the Atari 800. I think the music was better in that version too, but it sounds like this one adds that bass line, which is kind of neat.
This looks pretty fun. The Atari joystick in general leaves a bit to be desired however.

I have this game...for the Atari 5200.
That means, better graphics, better sound, far, FAR crappier controls. To this day I have never made it to the top of the mountain. This came out for the Colecovision too, and is included on the Colecovision Flashback console.

I have it on the Atari 800-XEGS computer. It's hard. I never had the manual for the 2600 one back in the day so I had zero clue WTF was going on.
I had this game on the Atari 8-bit computer and loved it inspite of the frustration level (the giant spider was way worse than the bats). I now got the game on my ColecoVision Flashback but it's not the same due to the sucky non-Atari controllers...

I had this game on Atari 8-bit and remember being similarly frustrated with it! Does the 2600 version not have the terrifying big green spider on the bottom level if you hang around for too long? That used to scare the absolute bejeezus out of me as a kid.

The spider in Krull 2600 creeped me out as a kid. But the ultimate was the ones in Resident Evil for PS1.

The 2600 had a lot of annoying bat enemies, not just in this game, but also in Adventure and Haunted House. The bat from Adventure is the reason I have trust issues.
