I can't believe the script described Anne as predatory. Men get to find a woman attractive, decide to pursue them (for whatever reason) etc and it is accepted as norm "man taking charge" but Anne is a "charming predator"? Really?! Esp when it was obvious that Ann was into Anne. I love this show but, the 'lesbian is the predator' narrative needs to stop. Replace "charming predator" with "overly eager"
I read it more as a way to head off any perceptions of her being a predator...especially when she talks of bringing Ann around to her way of thinking. Almost as if to say that some people might see Anne as "trying to change the straight" girl (or the girl that might be straight, but I [Anne] can fix that). I feel the direction was to show that within that hour-long meeting she went from, "Let's see how this little mousy girl I once met is" to "Oh, wow...she's not mousy at all...and I think I might amuse myself by chasing her as a fun diversion" to "Well, maybe I could actually see her as my wife someday."
To be fair, I would certainly describe a man acting like that around women in general as some kind of predator. And I did feel the sense described in the script--that her words were not at that moment of some rake with eyes on a pretty conquest but rather of someone hoping to have found a mate, a bride, a companion, a possible source of genuine love.
Thank you so much for posting this! How in the world did you get your hands on the script? I would love to read that! Please do more of these! I wouldn’t mind if you did the whole eight episodes of the show for us like this!
Moitri Ghosh I love that scene. What makes sally Wainwright so brilliant is she writes what the characters are thinking at the moment. At the end of that scene Sophie Rundle masterfully conveys what sally wrote was going through Ann Waller’s head at the time. ITS. SO. GOOD.
2:40, I freaking love the details. So precious and they make this one of my all-time favorite shows. Can't wait for season 2!!!
I was upset about the predator comment until SW wrote “and then she turns into someone who just wants to be happy”

...and the reality is that most of us are actually shy and not predatory at all. At least that is my impression.

Frankly I do believe we need to recall words have multiple meanings and much of those different meanings come down to nuance.
