For those who may have not understood this masterpiece: Wilbur had reached a point in his childhood where his wings were severely underdeveloped and it looked like he would never be able to fly. Phil discovered a way to make it possible through a dangerous magic. The one issue would be that Wilbur's wings would grow instantly and he would be able to fly, whereas in that point in time he should still be learning. When you learn you also learn your boundaries as your wings grow. So Wilbur didn't realize how far he could push himself and fell to his death. Phil now has to live with the "scar" of the choice he made from how the magic stained his hands, not to mention the additions of how his wings shrunk after he died so his corpse couldn't even tell what happened. It appears the magic did save him by the slightest through some form of "reincarnation" but now he's a phantom. This might add into how in the Origins SMP Tommy has stated he feels like Wilbur and Phil don't actually want him to ever learn to fly.
In my head cannon, Phil accidentally killed Will trying to make his wings stronger and he became a phantom. Because of this, he regrets his actions and that’s why Tommy is not able to fly either, because his wings are weak like Wilbur’s were but Phil refuses to take a chance and accidentally kill Tommy too, so he is left with small and weak wings that are barely useful. That would also explain why Tommy can only fall slowly instead of properly flying, because his wings are not strong enough.
adding on to that I think Philza used the magic one last time to make Wilbur come back as a phantom because when he just made the wings bigger his hands turned black, but when we see Wilbur as a phantom meeting him Phil has the black on his neck too.
The Greek myth about Icarus is actually really sad, it’s about an old architect who is trapped in a labyrinth with a king forced to make stuff for him, he has a son who wants to escape with him, he makes heavy bronze wings for them to fly away together, and he puts them on with hot wax, so Icarus can’t go too close to the sun, but Icarus gets too eager, flys too close to the son, believing his fathers wings will hold, the wax melts and he falls into the sea and dies. It’s really sad, but this animation is great!

I like to think the reason wilbur turned into a phantom and didn't completely die is because Phil had used black magic to make his wings bigger. Kinda like in this video, philza had used magic to bring wilburs deformed wings "where they were supposed to be" as a way to improve wilburs quality of life, causing the dark magic was contained in that area(his wings) due to wilburs own life and/or magic not accepting/merging with the magic withing the wings. This would also explain why he died, due to the fact him and his wings were now seperate entities, he began having difficulty controlling them (maybe the black magic would try to escape wil's body to get back to Phil given he's the caster) and this led to him falling from the sky. So when he died, given that wilburs own potential magic was now gone for good, the magic entered his body and brought him back. Infesting him with pure black magic but giving him what he wanted in the first place- his own set of wings. I feel like the black magic would also cause wilbur to be immortal, he can receive life ending injuries but he would always regenerate/come back. This is another way him and his father are different, he can live practically forever with no worry of anyone ever slaughtering him.
Its such a cool attention to detail that Phil's undershirt changes from white to black after wilburs death, I always love it when animators tell the story not just around the character but through them as well, so amazing!!
I freaking love this. For some reason this gave "songs of the sea" vibes ( songs of the sea is a movie i love). But this is awesome! I saw the twitch stream you did of this. and I couldn't wait for it to come out.
OMG OMG OMG! I LOVE this headcannon for Origin SMP Wilbur, and I don't even watch it. But it's so heartbreaking and I'm sure Phil would be damning his past self for pushing Will to fly when he didn't need to.
IS NO ONE GONNA TALK ABOUT THE FACT THAT THE COLOR FADED FROM WIL’S EYES BEFORE HE DIED?! THE ATTENTION TO DETAIL IS AMAZING! Also this animation almost made me cry from how good it is and the ending. /pos /lh Great Job Lucler as always.
THE BEGINNING IS SO CUUUTEEE. LIKE, MY FUCKING HEARTTT SWELLED THEN FUCKING SHRIVELED BY THE ENDING. Why would you play my heart like that, mate? I thought this would be a cute, wholesome animatic but now I'm crying. /lh /pos Anyways, this was genuinely amazing! You're animations just keep getting better and better and I'm living for it! Can't wait for the next one!! :D
in one of wilburs streams in march, tommy is talking about how his wings are too slow and will is like "just be glad you still have your feathery wings" or smthn so i think that's kinda cool.
So headcanon time: At first I thought Wilbur died because he crashed but after noticing that his wings return back to their original state and that Phil, alongside the song, says "What did I say?” I think it was the magic. Phil wondered what he said wrong, how he messed up the spell. Also the "dark” magic brought Wilbur back as a Phantom. Also I wondered if Wilbur lost his memory alongside coming back and now Phil is holding onto this secret and the massive guilt, but after hearing Wilbur on stream talk about sometimes still feeling the wings on his back from when he used to fly I think he does know what happened. In my headcanon Wilbur forgave Phil and made peace with it (since he is quite cheerful and mischievous as always) but Phil is still feeling the grief and immense guilt. I imagine Wilbur comforting Phil like "It’s ok! I had fun when I was able to fly. I’m thankful for the experience. Yeah you made a mistake but hey now I can walk through walls and scare people to shit! :D”
The little details you see everywhere and the blackened hands leading up to the incident where the magic took hold of Phil... Just your average extraordinary animation
The scene at 0:10 with Philza and little baby Wilbur laughing made my heart melt! And then you gutpunch me with Wilbur dying--jeezus christ can't poor Phil have his son live in at least one universe? Also, the entire animatic is gorgeous! The art is immaculate (as always) and the tone is spot on. I think you did wonderfully with the backgrounds too! There's always room for improvement but nothing is glaringly off and they work well with your style. Keep up the amazing work! :D

Yoooooo! This is some top tier stuff! I love this take on Origins Phil and Wilbur’s, well, origins! That it was Philzas love for his boy that ended up hurting him, and although Wil’s not gone for good, every time Philza looks at his son, he’s gonna have to see what he did when he messed with things he might not have fully understood! So good!
0:52 i was rewatching this for the 500th time are relized the small detail of wilburs pupils dissapearing and his eye colors getting duller when he passes!
I honestly love the song choice, because Icarus is ( from what i remember ) is about a father and son trying to escape a tower that the Greek Gods were put under. So, The father crafted wings for each of them out of wax and feathers, and the father warned his son to not fly too high or else the wax will heat up and dissolve, but dont fly too low or else he'd go into the ocean or not have enough wing air to go up into the main safe area for him to fly under. *Please do correct me! I remember watching a short youtube video explaining about this story and I absolutely adored it, and how sad the father and son story was.* I feel like the connection between this animation, is that Phil had to pay the gods something back because he did something to help Wilbur grow wings so he can fly. But, he had to repay something back, and that was the son he tried giving that freedom to fly just like how he does. He truly is Icarus, whilst Philza is truly the father within the Story of Icarus. I love the connection, you did amazing. Thank you for bringing another masterpiece
This is beautifully constructed, the animation fits so nicely with the song and the idea that Phil made Will stronger only for that to be the thing that ends up killing him... Man
This story makes a lot of sense actually because Phantoms are basically ghosts that fly in sky grieving their loss of life, or at least that’s what I believe phantoms are.
Such a sad but beautiful headcanon... It makes too much sense that a half-elytrian's wings wouldn't be strong enough to carry their weight... And that it frustrates them greatly, being able to see their parent sail through the skies so easily while they are stuck to the ground. The idea of OSMP!Wilbur and OSMP!Tommy experiencing such a fate is indeed very graspable... And Wilbur having died at some point is at least indirectly implied. After all, on the OSMP, being a phantom has been associated with death before, and really, given that Wilbur is canonically Philza's son, it would be quite likely that he was an avian like Tommy (which, according to the lore would be what half-elytrians are) before he died. Is that demise OSMP!Philza's fault? Well, it would be negligence at the very best and heavy guilt at the worst... And I really like your take on it. This iteration of Philza is akin to a phoenix after all, meaning that he certainly has access to powerful magic... And as we have seen, he takes pride in who and what he is. He would be confident and perhaps arrogant enough to challenge nature with a spell, especially for the sake of his son. All of this considered, the theory that Phil wanted to help Wilbur fly with his magic seems painfully fitting... Just like the conclusion that Wilbur didn't survive that experiment - whether it may be due to Philza's power not being strong enough or maybe being too strong for Wilbur's young body... Or Wilbur's own inexperience that led him to overestimate his abilities. It also saddens me what this backstory would mean for Tommy... He has been practicing flying for a long time now, and with great hopes and enthusiasm at that... And it might all be in vain, for nothing and nothing again. Maybe Phil doesn't have the heart to tell him... Or perhaps, he hopes to be proven wrong. Maybe, some day, Tommy's wings will be strong enough to fly; And while it would certainly taste sweet for Tommy, for Philza it might might be bitter, this realization. Because it would mean that Wilbur could have had it. It would mean that he could have flown if they had just waited. Either way, the best thing Philza can do is to be there for his sons when they need him. And you can tell that he genuinely wants and tries to be. There are another dozen lines I could use to describe how gorgeous your animatic is, Lucler, but I am convinced that you know the beauty of your own work so I'll cut myself short. I enjoy how your videos never fail to invite the viewer into the moment of the narrative they illustrate so lovingly and warmly, and this one here dares to even tell an entire, heartwarming and heart-wrenching story... You can truly see and feel the effort that went into this, and for that, I want to thank you. You deserve any praise the comment section may give you, because this animatic with its level of storytelling is absolutely beautiful and moving... And gosh does it fit the motif of Icarus. Your art (and the song you used) truly deserves to be noticed and appreciated.
THIS WOULD ALSO MAKE SENSE THE FACT THAT TOMMY WAS BEING TRAINED BY TUBBO USING OBSTACLES SO THAT WHEN HE EITHER GETS HIS WINGS NATURALLY OR BY PHIL AGAIN HE DOESNT FALL LIKE WILBUR
I now hc that when o! Phil met o! tommy and saw his tiny wings he absolutely refused to talk to him for like a solid month to afraid that he'd hurt/ kill in a video game him to, but tommy being tommy didn't let that last long and confronted him crying and caring on about he's a big man and how its quiet rude for the man he looks up to like a father not to spend time with him and Phil just relents still worried but now spending much more time with him and phantom o! Wilbur
Some has probably done this already but the attention to detail is amazing during 0:25 the enchantment writing reads "Dragons birds phantoms all with a certain tantum the eye watches over the ghosts healing what it desire the most take what is required one soul for another repay when expired and feel the souther. take to give" I love this. Video
I like the dark magic lore this that their hands turn black , it's like Agatha and Wanda and potentially Stephen when they use chaos magic or the darkhold
OSMP Headcanon: Philza was left to raise Wilbur alone since the mother died shortly after Wilbur's egg was laid. Philza never said anything about his mother, until his wings were found out to be underdeveloped for a teenage Elytrian. They were more Avian sized. So Philza decided to take matters into his own hands, he pulled all-nighters, studying magic spells that could help Wilbur grow his wings so he could fly. When the spell was cast, *“Birds, phantoms, dragons. All with a certain tantum. The eye watches over the ghosts. Healing what it desires the most. Take what is required. One soul for another. Repay when expired and feel the souther. Take to give.”* Philza’s hands became claw-like, stained with magic, and he didn’t want Wilbur to know the cost of his actions so he hid his hands whenever Wilbur entered. And it always made him happy seeing Wilbur happy, Wilbur was happy for a while, flying around, until while he was mid-air, he felt the spell expire and he fell to his death. His wings became tattered and Philza rushed over to scoop him up in his arms. “Not you, not you too!” He sobbed and held his child close. “What did I say wrong?” And that remains unanswered to this day. “Nothing, dad. You didn’t do anything wrong.” Wilbur said in his final gasps and his body fell limp, his wings shriveling as the light disappeared from his eyes. “I can see mother.” He whispered, and then he turned to ash, a smile on his face that would forever haunt the elder Elytrian. The next few days, Philza prayed, and prayed, and prayed for Wilbur to be brought back. He studied even more magic, and he was able to make a deal with the Goddess of death. Wilbur came back, but his appearance was different, his eyes were a bright green, and he wore tattered blue-grey wings. His ears pointed and he had a small tail that swished back and forth. His yellow shirt and black pants were baggy on him. It was like he was reborn anew. And he stared up at Philza with a scared look, but his mind was flooded with comfort. Timeskip to a few years later: Philza begged Death for another chance, and he found an abandoned egg. Tommy’s egg. He promised to raise the little Avian correctly, refusing to teach him how to fly, fearing failure again. He came off as a more strict parent towards Tommy, but it was for a good reason. Life had given him another chance at fatherhood, and he wouldn’t mess up this time. so he decided to start to hover over Tommy, always watching for signs of recklessness or danger. He'd protect Tommy with his life. Even though he had failed to protect Wilbur. Of course Tommy doesn't know that Wilbur and Phil are related, until Wilbur states that he still feels the wings on his back, even though he has broken tattered wings now, he's described them to be feathery and soft. He starts to ask Wilbur about what he remembers, and he tells Tommy that he used to be an Elytrian, but his wings were always so small, and he hated it. Because he wanted big wings like Philza. He wanted to fly, to feel the wind in his hair. He skipped over the magic of course, in fear of scaring Tommy away from Philza forever. But eventually Tommy found the books that Philza studied to help Wilbur, during a visit. He still hasn’t pieced everything together, but he’s trying to. (Tell me what you guys think below!)
SO GOOD. JUST SO GOOD OH MY GOD! I love how this story suits both of them, especially Wilbur because he said that he could still remember the times when he used to fly. this is jut soooo beautiful
Ok, I've watched this a dozen times and I love it so much, especially Wilbur at the very end, his face that just looks confused and sad and I love all of it and the song fits so well
Everything about this is so perfect w h a t- like the music choice the animation the colours the story even phils little laugh sound effect at the beginning :DD
I like the idea that Phil might have been a type of breed which means all of his offspring comes out disabled and some sort of way and building on the inspiration from the old version of the avian what if Wilbur was like that and had other birth defects which decreased his lifespan but tommy was born with only one semi defected wing which is why he's faster and can jump higher
I'll write the translation. I got confused about a word or two, tho. Maybe I translated it wrong idk. "Dragons Birds Phantoms All with a certain tantum The eye watches over the ghosts Hearing what it desire the most Take what is required One soul for another Repay when expired And feel the souther Take to give"
I have a headconnon for this that is so fitting: When Wilbur dies, Philza is devastated so he asks DreamXD to revive him. This is why Wilbur has green eyes and some of his features r vibrant green to show that he’s in debt to XD. Phantoms r dead souls of people that died to magic, so, that’s why Wilbur is a phantom hybrid
Oh my god this is one of the most tear-jerking animations in the fandom I've seen ;__; This is a super gorgeous video and all the effort you put into it definitely shows

I freaking love this. For some reason this gave "songs of the sea" vibes ( songs of the sea is a movie i love). But this is awesome! I saw the twitch stream you did of this. and I couldn't wait for it to come out.
Definitely "Amhrán na Farraige" (song of the sea) vibes
NOOOOOO DONT MAKE ME CRY
Dude those songs are so good
I like how the little blanket in his crib at the beginning foreshadows his phantom wings, a beautiful piece with many little details as always :]
DUDE I CRIED LIKE A BABY MAN! This was just so beautiful and it would be great if that was actually Wilbur’s origin story
1:00 I like how you can see Wilburs wings go back to the tiny ones thats both a cool and sad detail
OMG OMG OMG! I LOVE this headcannon for Origin SMP Wilbur, and I don't even watch it. But it's so heartbreaking and I'm sure Phil would be damning his past self for pushing Will to fly when he didn't need to.
Knowing Will is a phantom, I knew it wouldn't ended well, but god why did I watched it after all
Theses videos are beautiful animations, dont let Will destroys your art, pls dont delete
/pos /lh
Great Job Lucler as always.
Wilbur being so happy at 0:33 has my entire heart
Smae😢
THE BEGINNING IS SO CUUUTEEE. LIKE, MY FUCKING HEARTTT SWELLED THEN FUCKING SHRIVELED BY THE ENDING. Why would you play my heart like that, mate? I thought this would be a cute, wholesome animatic but now I'm crying. /lh /pos
Anyways, this was genuinely amazing! You're animations just keep getting better and better and I'm living for it! Can't wait for the next one!! :D
One of the saddest things is wilbur appears to be 9-12 when phil uses the magic still nowhere near fully mature and had no idea what couldve happened
I love the subtly of Wilbur's eyes dimming when he's being held by Phil! Amazing work, stunningly detailed and smooth.
in one of wilburs streams in march, tommy is talking about how his wings are too slow and will is like "just be glad you still have your feathery wings" or smthn so i think that's kinda cool.
So headcanon time:
At first I thought Wilbur died because he crashed but after noticing that his wings return back to their original state and that Phil, alongside the song, says "What did I say?” I think it was the magic.
The idea of Phil giving up his hands to make Will's wings grow is amazing- and I love how Phil hides his hands.
No because then there would be a nexus event and all universes would shatter
this is adorable and sad at the same time
I thought this was just a cute video with baby wilbur and now I'm crying in the middle of applebees
I love how you can see Wilbur's eyes go dull when he dies, beautiful animation!
Dude I love that you added Phil’s actual laugh into this it’s such a great little detail 😊
The work put into this is more then I can imagine beautiful job
This made me cry at 2:41 A.M last night

Oh hi! :D
The little kid laugh with Phil’s laugh at the beginning... too may emotions
the fall of icaurs
I remember watching a short youtube video explaining about this story and I absolutely adored it, and how sad the father and son story was.*
I feel like the connection between this animation, is that Phil had to pay the gods something back because he did something to help Wilbur grow wings so he can fly. But, he had to repay something back, and that was the son he tried giving that freedom to fly just like how he does. He truly is Icarus, whilst Philza is truly the father within the Story of Icarus. I love the connection, you did amazing. Thank you for bringing another masterpiece
i think about this animation DAILY I SWEAR ITS GORGEOUS AND PAINFUL AND SO CANON IN MY MIND
Your animations always inspire me- they are so good!
This is beautifully constructed, the animation fits so nicely with the song and the idea that Phil made Will stronger only for that to be the thing that ends up killing him... Man
this animation is so good that the song was the first thing i learned on guitar
I just put on subtitles and just realized that the song was literally about Daedalus and Icarus with his fatality
Great now I’m crying, also love how he turns into a phantom it’s so cool
Maybe, some day, Tommy's wings will be strong enough to fly;
And while it would certainly taste sweet for Tommy, for Philza it might might be bitter, this realization.
THIS IS PURE EMOTIONAL DAMAGE IN THE BEST WAY POSSIBLE
WILBUR’S PHANTOMNIZED
I now hc that when o! Phil met o! tommy and saw his tiny wings he absolutely refused to talk to him for like a solid month to afraid that he'd hurt/ kill in a video game him to, but tommy being tommy didn't let that last long and confronted him crying and caring on about he's a big man and how its quiet rude for the man he looks up to like a father not to spend time with him and Phil just relents still worried but now spending much more time with him and phantom o! Wilbur
Some has probably done this already but the attention to detail is amazing during 0:25 the enchantment writing reads
"Dragons birds phantoms all with a certain tantum the eye watches over the ghosts healing what it desire the most take what is required one soul for another repay when expired and feel the souther. take to give"
I love this. Video
This might be the most wholesome thing I've ever seen almost cried at the end
THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL AND SAD AT THE SAME TIME
i absoloutly love this, its just so gorgous and sad fits the origins smp perfectly
Icarus is like one of my favorite names ever
This is amazing- the smoothness of the animation, the story you tell, it’s so amazing and I love it. Thank you for sharing it with us!!
The fact that they can animate death perfectly is terrifying
I just realized that right after Wilbur died well closed his eyes his wings got smaller like they just shriveled up
I hate you for making something so beautiful, a true masterpiece
I like the dark magic lore this that their hands turn black , it's like Agatha and Wanda and potentially Stephen when they use chaos magic or the darkhold
you had no right to make me feel this 😭😭😭
I wasn't prepared to cry at 6am
This was gorgeous and I love the designs for their origin characters
OSMP Headcanon:
Philza was left to raise Wilbur alone since the mother died shortly after Wilbur's egg was laid.
Timeskip to a few years later:
Philza begged Death for another chance, and he found an abandoned egg.
Ok, I've watched this a dozen times and I love it so much, especially Wilbur at the very end, his face that just looks confused and sad and I love all of it and the song fits so well
Everything about this is so perfect w h a t-
like the music choice
the animation
the colours
the story
even phils little laugh sound effect at the beginning
:DD
I wasn’t expecting to cry today, well ig something happens when you least expect it.
So cute!!! Also ending was very pog
This is so sweet..
Daedalus gained the knowledge. Icarus paid the price.
NOT THE TRAGIC BACKSTORY NOOOO
The detail in this is insane! Wilbur later showing up as a phantom, phill holding his hand, amazing!
Definitely not me reading the enchanting table writing on the walls lol
What does it say?
I'll write the translation. I got confused about a word or two, tho. Maybe I translated it wrong idk.
"Dragons
Birds
Phantoms
All with a certain tantum
The eye watches over the ghosts
Hearing what it desire the most
Take what is required
One soul for another
Repay when expired
And feel the souther
Take to give"
I have a headconnon for this that is so fitting:
When Wilbur dies, Philza is devastated so he asks DreamXD to revive him. This is why Wilbur has green eyes and some of his features r vibrant green to show that he’s in debt to XD. Phantoms r dead souls of people that died to magic, so, that’s why Wilbur is a phantom hybrid
I wish I could like more than once this is absolutely stunning
⟟ was not expecting to cry today
Oh my god this is one of the most tear-jerking animations in the fandom I've seen ;__; This is a super gorgeous video and all the effort you put into it definitely shows
Fall damage logic hits differently
How is baby Wilbur so cute tho???!
This sent literal SHIVERS throughout my body. I looked this up for a wing reference and then ended up totally forgetting trying to find a reference to watch it. Beautiful work!
It's so sad! But super cool animatic! Good job!
Beautiful it's so perfect and sad at the same time
Holy shit this never fails to blow me away, I love how you showed how they grow and I love the designs so much !
OHHHH I LOVE THIS AU
SO THIS IS HOW GHOSTBUR IN ORIGIN SMP BORN
I was wondering if it connect with DSMP which is no! Great animationnn
Ohhhh Phil's hand turn black cuz of growing wil's wings
So, as per usual, I absolutely LOVED the animation!!! Both Wilbur's and philza's character designs were really pleasant to look at, and very spot on!! 😁😎
the little audio clip added in at the beginning killed me - my heart!!
