The Godfather of Soul just doing his funk thang! The band is the JB's and later on most of them left the Godfather to jam with Parliament Funkadelic.

Oh and just to add I was looking at your thumbnail and it said Papa don’t take no mess part one and two. The original singles were like four minutes on each side part one and part two on the 45s. So again this long cut you heard was just the album versionand it had nothing to do with the singles or how he sang it in concert sometimes he sang it for two minutes sometimes he sang it for four or five minutes but never the entire album.

I don’t know if you could change the title but it’s actually “PAPA not “POPPA”.

The guy playing the trombone solo is Fred Wesley, who was his music and band Director in part of the band for many years and the guy playing the saxophone solo is Maceo Parker probably the most recognizable person in Mr. Brown’s band. And that is James Brown playing the piano. He played the piano in the organ. he wasn’t trained he played his own unorthodox style. He normally just played with his right hand..

      WOW...IDK JB played any instruments.

@@oldschoolhip-hopheadriorea9178 yeah he played a few other instruments also but he was not proficient in those. Even in Oregon it was basically his own style he wasn’t really a great organ and piano player but what he played was unique and cool. If you listen to the original SEX MACHINE single that’s him playing the piano in the little break.

Fred Wesley also did the horns for Parliament and Parliament adjacent groups

This was the JB‘s. And when he says “hit me” he wasn’t talking about his father he was directing the band to hit him with him horn riff. (I am replying as I’m listening to your reaction. 😉

In that one line where he said now papa might grin, drink a little taste of gin, but his last 10, on a little game of skin (not “gin”) Mr. Brown is not that easy to understand all all the time so sometimes you have to decipher. 🤣

The album HELL from 1974 was the follow up to the million selling THE PAYBACK album. HELL had nothing to do with any movie, it was a double album by Mr. Brown in 1974, that was the follow up to the million selling THE PAYBACK double album. Actually THE PAYBACK album what’s the supposed to be the follow up album to Mr. Brown’s 1973 movie soundtrack for BLACK CAESAR. For the movie HELL UP IN HARLEM. But for whatever reason the producers didn’t want it so Mr. Brown just put the
album out and it was one of the biggest albums of his career. PAPA DON’T TAKE NO MESS was his third number one R&B song of the year, and in a row, following THE PAYBACK and MY THANG singles.

No he didn’t play songs that long in concert. That was just the album cut which was the complete fourth side of the double album. In concert if he sang this song it would only be like three or four minutes. His concert averaged from 90 minutes to sometime two hours and 2 1/2 hours and his set would be about an hour hour and 15 minutes sometimes longer. He almost never played the songs in concert like they were on the recording for the most part. And like I said I’ve seen him about 100 times from 1971 until 2005 so I’ve seen all the different bands and all the different stages of his career and different styles.

Yeah he said “trick”another words when a prostitute picks up a guy they called them “tricks”. he was saying his father would not be caught up with something like that. Because his rap was very quick.

Actually this is from 1974 and this is Funk music. Not R&B, not soul, it might have elements of jazz. James Brown created funk single-handedly in 1965 with Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag. And perfected it in 1967 with Cold Sweat. He changed the emphasis from the beat on the two and four to the one and three which is why they call it “on the one”.

@@oldschoolhip-hopheadriorea9178 thanks, yeah I love when people react to Mr. Brown. And everybody is not as big a fan as I am and some other people are. So I like to let people that react know some of this stuff especially when they’re like you that you’re very enthusiastic about it. Believe me it’s much appreciated on my end to see these type of reactions.
