Whoever says parallel 5ths are wrong IS WRONG

- A Foggy Day (In London Town). Arrangement by Walter Latzko. Originally sung by 1978 International Quartet Champions, the Bluegrass Student Union! In theory class, I was taught that parallel 5ths are wrong - and this tag clearly disproves that rule! ;) I apologize for the couple small differences in the video and the transposition.

Not just performing on a top tier level, but challenging conventional beliefs in the process. I applaud you.
Thank you, my friend!! Gotta keep challenging those conventional beliefs! 🤣

Goat title from goat barbershopper. Not to mention, goat song. Can we get an entire “classics” album from you, Tim?! TOO GOOD
Thanks, Niko! I love that idea! Time to get working on it!
“Parallel fifths are wrong”
Every famous contemporary composer:
“You sure about that?”
They were already used a ton 500 years ago, and really never went away. It's just a tip for new still learning composers, since it feels like the most obvious and natural second voice, but it's aplication is actually a bit niche and you need to know what you're doing when you are using it (it doesn't imply whether it's minor/major like 3rds and 6ths do). But by no means is it ever wrong. But then again if you know what you are doing, nothing is really wrong. It's art after all, there are no wrong answers.

One of my favorite sayings is that "you should learn the rules of music, and then break them". Great sounding tag. Tuesdays are happy days!
Love it!!
The way it’s written really makes it sound almost “foggy” the piece is written really well, and of course sung great!
Thank you!!
What’s particularly interesting….. be buggered if I’m going to skip.
what!? n jolt the plasticity of reason in the arrangement …. don’t think so
a great NYs’ to you Tim …. ur amazing
I love that "buzz" feeling when he sings. Proves that you don't have to sing off key in barbershop to achieve that.
How did I miss this! Holy cats the goosebumps in several paths of the song! So clean and beautiful! Wow
My music theory knowledge isn't extensive enough to know if parallel fifths are wrong, but my ears tell me that everything about this performance is right, right, RIGHT! This arrangement, and all of its yummy components, is beyond outstanding. You, Tim, are simply fantabulous.
❤❤❤❤
Love it! Thanks so much, Lynn!
they're considered wrong because of how well they fit together. they blend together too much and it ends up sounding only like 1 voice instead of multiple. I think in this case, due to the intricacies of barbershop tuning it's not as noticeable. Hope this helps, though I'm not too knowledgeable on it all myself
@@holdeenyo8914 Ah, thank you. That makes sense! It works for me!
Somebody should tell my old Music Theory professor about this. Would've saved me at least 2 sleepless nights throughout the semester. Amazing performance as always, Tim!
Many a failed exercise in theory due to fifths, and yet, jazz loves parallel 4ths. Go figure! Great tag and well sung as always!!!
Thanks, Tim!! I'll sing parallel 4ths and 5ths all day long!
I love the fact that with your perfect blend (to your own vocals), you're able to ring a hell of an overtone on this despite the fact that it's not a bombastic tag.
Hello there Tim, can I just say that I am from the UK; I play classical music often, however I am also in a barbershop group in my school; I recently discovered your channel, and I have listened to your go the distance many times, when you sang on this channel or with the rest of your group. I believe you are a great inspiration and I just wanted to say thank you for all that you do; I am also a tenor, but I definitely don’t have the range you have!!!
Wonderful, as always!!!!
And whoever says parallel fifths are wrong is indeed wrong -- parallel fifths are just counterproductive in situations where you want two voices to sound independent (like in a Bach chorale). But they sound lovely here! (As a music theory junkie it irks me when 18th century counterpoint rules are taught as if they apply to all music lol)
Agreed!!
My music theory instructor taught the rules and said they were good to know, only break them when you knew why you were breaking them.
I love how you manage to fill this with so much emotion, even though it's a technically dazzling piece. Thank you.
Thank you! I appreciate that!
I just can’t believe what I’m hearing, …. Amazing!!!
My wife isn’t usually into close harmony singing but she perked her ears up when the parallel fifths happened and said “ooh that sounds nice”
Wô. Chills. Literally, my arm hair raised up starting @1:58. I listened again, it happened again. Wô.
Making music where technique and craft make the jump at light speed to artistry. Good heavens; this was beautiful.
Your voice is so in tune that those fifths sound like a robot, but like the most organic robot ever
That tag, that tag, oh my! That is sooooooo right!
Wow, I have a whole new respect for parallel 5th's from now on.
That was awesome Tim...Awesome 👌
LG.....
This is one of my favorite ever barbershop songs i've been secretly wishing you'd do it for so long!
Wow! What a sweet message in this song! I don't think I ever really heard the words before! You make it real,Tim. Beautifully done,Tim!
This was amazing! I would love to see a full version.
Thanks, Lucas! This version was just missing the intro. Maybe I'll have to paste the intro on! haha
Awesome Bluegrass student union. Great quartet. Thanks, Tim.
This is so great! Getting foggy day vibes in Houston is hard most days. Thanks so much, Tim!
Thank you!! Yeah, Houston doesn't really have the same climate as London! 🤣
Incredible job, as usual! It’s still early, but I was just listening to O Come O Come Emmanuel on your channel, and also about how insane it would be to have that on Spotify! And at that point, you may as well make it the best Christmas gift ever, and do a whole Christmas album! 😂Probably just wishful thinking, but I know that I can’t be the only one that would listen. Just a thought, but no matter what, keep singing!! 💈🎤
Thanks, Trenton! I appreciate that! I am planning to put some of my tags on Spotify, including the Christmas ones. I have plans for a Christmas album too - but not going to make it for this year.
Awesome! Always looking forward to any of your content!
It's so funny to me the appeal of O Come, O Come. That was my second arrangement in 1991 - I was so clumsy back then. It started with the tag (inspired by First Call), then the final chorus followed by the middle chorus. Which was the original start. Then I was talking to my dad about the chart and he started singing "Veni, Veni" (in Latin of course, ha, ha, ha) and that inspired me to do the first chorus in Gregorian style. Such a cluster of a chart that ended up working!!!
Well I sure do enjoy it! Keep up the good work!
@@kevinkeller3454my chorus will love this story.
They should invent a way where 4tims can compete in a quartet . That was perfect. Wow
hahaha the virtual multitrack contest! 🤣
@@TimWaurickMusic I meant for international lol
@@Patrickkind78 ha now that seems impossible! Unless we do a 3 part backing track and lead live!
Beautiful, Tim. Keep on, keepin' on! Love these!
One of my favorite songs and Tags!!
Yes, 'theoretically speaking', you're correct on that ancient rule that parallel 5th movement is considered wrong. Those people, whomever they are (should be slapped silly), OBVIOUSLY never heard this song nor Walter's awesome use of how to create such beautifully fitting texture WITH parallel 5th movement! Tim, you've once again outdone yourself! Thanks for blessing my life!
Tim, this was among the most beautiful of the songs/tags you’ve chosen to gift us. BGSU has been my favorite quartet since I first heard them. This has been my favorite album (Gershwin).
You not only did it justice, you added an exclamation point after it.
Bravo!!
Brightening the morning as always! Another winner
Thank you!!
My favorite performance of this tune used to be by Ella---now it's yours!
Wow that's the highest praise. Thank you so much!
Tim once again you seem to amaze me! My dad also says he loves hearing all the new videos you post!
Pure joy! Wonderful!
Thank you!!
One of my favorite songs! And so well done... Bravo Tim, as always...
That modulation to G major was EPIC 😮 Brilliant 🤗😍💙😊
Breaking rules is a tricky thing. Do it wrong, and it sounds wrong. But done right, it sounds like singing about fog with a fog horn in the background. I can't imagine a better way to break a rule than this.
Wow. Love that chord and resolution @:48
A good theory teacher won't tell you parallel fifths are wrong; rather, that their boldness makes them best suited for special effects like this.
Agreed. They aren't wrong, unless you are going by classical counterpoint rules.
I do find it useful and important to start off without parallel 5ths as young musicians learn counterpoint, but I find it equally important to remind them that that is only one way to do music
Who needs ASMR when you’ve got barbershop for tingles! Thank you Tim, beautiful as always!
And yes, everything Niko said too! GOAT, GOAT, GOAT! 🐐 💈😁
GLORIOUS!!!! Ah there were several moments I was bouncing off the walls!!
Wow! Thank you!
Maybe not in the Cello parts in an orchestration (although that would be so cool!) but in things a capella and certainly BBS parallel 5th rule.
Now I at least want to hear some cello parallel 5ths! 🤣
Oh my god. Amazing as always Tim.
Thank you!!
Beyond Excellent as usual.
Watching the musical notation as you sing….it’s a bit scary in some spots - all those flats, etc…lol. But impressive as always.
Ominous open fifths in the bass made me think of the pipes of Scotland 🏴
I love the sound of moving 5ths and 4ths ❤
Very nice. I love that ending.
My favorite BSU song! So good!
Same!!
Beautiful!!❤
Ooh that bar 53!
Hey Tim, please make Tag of the "Good Vibrations"
Parallel 5ths are against part writing rules. I was not taught they were wrong. I was told to learn how to break the rules tastefully. I would argue that your use of parallels are a completely different instance as only 2 of the 4 parts are in action: cats in the tenor clef are resting.
Arguably, you just slipped in a bar of some pretty sweet organum.
Great Singing, Tim. I look forward to your videos.
One enhancement I would like to request is to number each of your singing windows with a number that corresponds to which pitch is being sung. Sorry, I am not a musician so I am not sure what terminology to use. Basically, if you were to number the voices from top to bottom in the music staff, such that 1 is highest voice, 2 is next, etc, and 4 is the lowest voice on the staff. Then label each singing window with a #1, #2, etc, #4. That way if I wanted to watch you sing the highest pitches, I know to watch window #1. And even better would be if I could ONLY listen to a certain window. I would LOVE LOVE to hear each part separately and then hear them all together again.
Thanks for that. I almost always place the videos Tenor, Lead, Bass, Baritone - similar to how most quartets stand. So it would be 1, 2, 4, 3 from top to bottom on the music. I hope that helps a bit. And I appreciate the suggestion.
Just compete on baritone already thankyouuuu
My boy Josh knows what’s up
Lol!! maybe someday!
Agreed 🙌
just too good
Measure 41 looks like my worst nightmare
Also parallel fifths with crunchy notes mixed in 😍
Oh wow, that was awesome.
At last someone has the courage to say it!!!😂
Let's go, more BSU content 😁
Where would I find the sheet music for this? I've looked for this key all over and can only find the one that starts in Bb. Did Bluegrass Student Union transpose up a half?
First, it's said that "rules are made to be broken", and never was this more true than in harmony. My music theory teacher used to say that it's okay to break the rules, but just be aware that you're doing so and you'd better have a good reason.
In this case these are really just two voices singing bare open fifths, not even triads, so I'm not sure that the "rules" of harmony even apply. I think consecutive fifths are frowned upon because they stick out, they call the listener's attention to themselves and distract from the harmony as a whole. But in this context, that's okay because there is no other harmonic activity happening. It's just those open fifths, all by themselves, and that's exactly where the listerner's attention is supposed to be focused.
So it's all good. 😀
Now, let's talk about the Beatles' arrangement of "Here, There and Everywhere"... 😉
BRB gonna send this to my theory teacher lol
Magic
do you modulate your bass or is it all you no tuning?
Well, each week i say to myself, 'it doesnt get any better than this.' Then the following week a new comes out and i say to myself, 'It doesn't get any better than this.' Then the next week....
Hey, what are parallel fifths?
Ever met someone famous having breakfast and you stop to say "Hi" and make a complete jackass out of yourself... Yeah, me either! Sorry Tim - Love UA-cam singing with ya
As long as it's not parallel 7ths we're good!
hahaha! I HAVE heard that too - and it's funky!
I'm gonna be that guy... parallel 5ths are "wrong" (not even wrong, just unideal) in one single, very particular style of composition. From a classical nerd, I can assure you that parallel 5ths are just fine. Exhibit A: this video.
Fucking brilliant. ❤
They have always been right
Darn right!!
like wtf you are incredible
My music theory teacher sadly :(((
Tell them I said they're wrong.🤣🤣🤣
TIM..............YOU HAVE SO MUCH TALENT IT HURTS@@TimWaurickMusic
I am so glad for you tube.....I can hear all your tags....thanks Tim for sharing your talent
Great singing and great arrangement.....but I have to admit that the parallel 5ths offend my (classical harmonic) ears.
