  • 2nd Alarm House Fire Claims The Life Of A Young Child
    Troy, New York
On April 25, 2021 at 5:07AM, The city of Troy’s Fire Department was dispatched to 388 4th Street for a reported structure fire with reports of a baby trapped in the building. The dispatcher notified all responding units they were taking multiple calls on the fire. Engine six, three, four, two, Truck one , Truck two, the rescue squad, medic four, and the Battalion chief called in route to the scene.
With engine six being only one block away they quickly arrived on scene and had heavy fire pushing from the center of two buildings and the officer on engine six declared the signal 30 for a working structure fire and the Battalion chief declared the second alarm bringing the city of Watervliet’s fire department and the Watervliet Arsenal to the scene. Firefighters immediately deployed an inch and three quarter hand line and a two and a half inch hand line.
Firefighters from multiple engine companies quickly arrived on scene and began to force their way into the adjacent apartment building as they had heavy black smoke pushing from the second-floor windows and roof area. As heavy fire pushed over 40 feet into the morning sky, firefighters made entry into the primary fire building where they encountered heavy fire conditions and thick black smoke on the first floor.
Police began to assist in evacuating residents from the buildings with the fire department. While police were in the rear of the building they were told there was children still trapped in the building. The patrol sergeant immediately notified the dispatcher to relay the message to the fire department on scene. Residence from the apartment building rapidly evacuated the building and firefighters began to conduct their primary search of the adjacent buildings that had heavy smoke pushing from the roof. As firefighters were searching the building they discovered a child on the floor and immediately notified command they were coming out with one. Firefighters immediately scooped up the young child and made their way to the door where they were met with additional firefighters and rush the child away from the burning building.
As conditions were rapidly changing on the fire ground, A large dog jumped from the rear of the building to escape the fire. Neighbors assisted in getting the dog back to its owners safely. A recall for additional firefighters to come into the city of Troy was placed by command.
Multiple firefighters from truck one made their way to the roof of the multi dwelling apartment building and began to conduct ventilation. As firefighters cut the roof open the second floor of the building flashed over sending fire out of every window in the rear, sides, and front of the building. The ladder that firefighters used to get to the roof became wrapped in fire. One firefighter quickly made their way down the ladder through the fire to the ground where he was met by one of the chiefs on scene and one of the pump operators. Multiple firefighters on the ground quickly move the ladder to the other side of the building and multiple firefighters scramble down the ladder from the roof. Firefighters from truck one quickly regain their composure and went to work in putting the truck company in the air and began to conduct master stream operations. Command advised all units on the fire ground to evacuate all of the buildings that they are going defensive.
Firefighters on scene established numerous blitz fires, hand lines, deck guns, and ladder pipes and began to drive the fire back. As firefighters switched into defensive Operations they now had 384, 386, 388, and 390 Fourth Street now involved. Firefighters pumped tens of thousands of gallons of water into the buildings knocking down the heavy fire conditions. Large amounts of water began to pour out the front doors of all of the fire buildings. Debris, clothing, and parts of the building floated in front of the building. Firefighters had substantial structural collapse on the primary fire building in the roof area. As firefighters brought the fire under control command ordered the half a dozen hand lines, ladder pipes, and blitz fires to shut down so firefighters could begin to assess the risk factor of making entry into the fire buildings.
Command authorized crews to make entry to the fire buildings And to begin to conduct extensive overhaul on scene. Command was notified that the child that was discovered inside of the building had passed away. The New York State office of fire prevention and control was requested to the scene with their investigation team. Firefighters remained on scene for over two days. Fire investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire. Over 20 people were displaced due to the fire. One other person suffered injuries on scene and was transported to the hospital. The fire is still under investigation at this time.

@@MrTenor-ch5gs Don't need to go on the roof to vent. Horizontal ventilation is just as effective and 100 times safer. Its about communication between interior and exterior crews and venting properly in the right places. You guys have and obsession with getting on roofs when you don't need to. That's one of the reasons you have the worst figures for Lodd and seriously injured of any developed country. If yo watch the video before the guy is up on the roof the fire is already venting and well developed and then he goes up on the roof. Total waste of time , has no benefits to the interior crews and has just wasted time doing something that didn't improve conditions. If you ventilate the highest window on any building then you will find that Horizontal ventilation works just as well as you don't find any casualties hiding in the loft.

Hard to comment on anything when we see a child fatality... No idea at what point of the video description narrative the video started and I wasn't there so I'm going to put my peanuts back in my pocket. With nothing else being said if I was the chief of that department I'd be getting my training records in order.

It shouldn't be hard to comment on Fire Department Incompetence especially when it could have been the cause of the child's death. Like the FDNY did with an 11-year-old girl! Gross, braindead performance while she cried for help, and they did nothing.

This is very easy so pay attention. You look for the burning material and put tank water on it through the windows until you have soaked the room to the point nit won't re-ignite any time soon. Then you go into a much safer and cooler interior to mop up and search for the victims you have protected. Venting? Every second floor windows was already doing that. See? I told you firefighting was simple and it's as safe as you make it.

0:01 At this point, the Deck Gun on Tank Water could have fogged that ally to coat all the exterior surfaces and greatly reduce radiant heat. Then they would have been able to see which windows were showing flame and then hit those rooms through the windows.
0:30 Thick, black, fuel rich smoke coming out the windows under pressure. Is anyone in there with a charged line extinguishing the burning material and cooling the gasses?
2:34 They obviously didn't do a thorough job. There is No Way this should be allowed to happen. There should be a hose putting water through that window to soak that room. There are IDIOTS on that roof, and they have to pull their only ladder away because the fire they allowed to burn is coming out the window where the ladder was.
3:00 Do you see that idiot coming down the ladder? All he did, besides needlessly risk his life, is open the roof so the fire could burn better. That's IT!
4:00 These aren't FIREFIGHTERS, they are Arsonists!
