- I was recently in my home town of Nelson B,C Canada. This is a very beautiful vibrant small town. I grew there and never did I see a single homeless person on the streets. Now given the times we live in that has changed. It's very sad to see the state and condition the town is heading this episode will show you a little glimpse of what it has become.
I drove across Canada last summer and the whole country is this way.

Homelessness could happen to anybody I've been homeless myself for 5 years now. And I was and I was working 2 years I was doing really good and the company that I was working for they found out that I'm homeless and they got rid of me and I was about to get my efficiency. And I did keep myself clean because I was leaving from time to time in hotels so twice a week I will take a shower and I will shave and I was clean all the time and I smell good all the time and the company got rid of me as soon as they find out that I was leaving in my car. That goes to show you how many cruel people we have in our world.

I grew up in Kaslo and used to come to Nelson to pick up supplies for the mine I worked at.We used to stop at the old Queens hotel for a draft beer(50 cents).I still come to Nelson atleast 2 times a year and absolutely love the place.I agree that Nelson has changed dramatically over the years and not for the better but in saying that there's a charm and magic to the city.Main street dinner is definitely 1 of our go tos along with the dominion Cafe for the best London fogs and a homemade muffin.We were just in Nelson May-24.
Dude, so hard to see our home town and people in it suffer. I still remember when I used to live there in 2007….wasnt anywhere near that and all you could see was culture.
I know right it is very sad indeed.... Nelson is still a nice place but it is declining FAST! I also did some research it has the highest percentage of poverty in BC so stats don't lie that place is struggling no good jobs!

I moved out of Nelson about 5 years ago now, and I noticed the problem back then, this goes to show its gotten worse over that time. I feel one of my friends put it best after talking and getting to know a few of them on the streets; its unfortunate, but for some of them they have nowhere else to go, as in, they might've been homeless in a different city and had to leave for reasons unknown. I live in Vancouver now and I've walked the corners of Main and E Hastings many times a week, and honestly it could make sense that with such a large homeless community, if you dont make any friends, people might just push you out. I notice this as far as 51st and Kerr St, where theres a couple homeless that frequent the neighbourhood rather than staying around downtown where there is technically more accessible aid like shelters and soup kitchens. In a perfect world there would be a system in place that would help transition through halfway-homes and low-income housing into getting taught skills. There's just no infrastructure for it because it's never been deemed "profitable"
I appreciate your approach with this video. No judgement, respecting the homeless people, no ranting. It's such a sad situation and can elicit a lot of negative emotion. Not falling into that makes this video one of the best I've seen on the topic. ❤❤

Nelson used to be so awesome🌸….cabin up by Kaslo,& love to come into Nelson for the day,used to be so artistic.
Stopped coming into Nelson about 5 yrs ago it started getting bad with all the drugs & homeless then! sad,was such a fun great historic little town.But it’s all of Canada now,it’s a sewer everywhere….Canada just got given away,again! I feel so defeated in this country, everywhere is crowded ,all of our services,& they still keep bringing more in.
If Canada put more effort into the population we had & made more opportunities for our indigenous peoples,better housing,education,counselling,etc ….they could of had a work force within Canada,have young women & men off the reservations & into trade schools, teachers,doctors,nurses…educate them on reservations with better schools,better living conditions,& teach them old skills,but also have them learn new skills to better make a good wage.
The work force is here,the government was too lazy & slow

@@theJoefamilychannel what a weird take on it. Rents are obscene, everywhere. Who charges rent? Landlords. Going for every buck they can. Landlords are everywhere, corporate and mom&pop. So what's causing the problem? High and increasing rents. Charged by landlords. Where tf does 'da gubmint' come into it?
I also grew up in Nelson/Castlegar 30mins away and every time I come back it looks more and more like Nacht Der Untoten. There was an encampment of 20 homeless drug addicts dozing off and leaving needles everywhere behind the YOUTH CENTER.
Most of Canada's bs right now is due to our poor leadership, but at the same time we can't treat the zombies like victims 100% of the time. I know there are exceptions, but at the end of the day most people know drugs are incredibly harmful and addictive, they know this before their first hit and still do it. Maybe they had a hard life that led them to escape with drugs, but also why does their escape have to result in me being yelled at and spit on in their zombie voice. Why do I have to smell and try not to step in the shit they took in front of subway. I've had a hard life too but you will never see anyone else cleaning up after me or feel scared around me.
Most of us including myself have had a rough life you are 100 percent correct. They need to be held accountable for the actions they do!
I live in Woodstock Ontario, same thing is going on here. Methadone clinics, Homeless, drugs, and crime. Our homeless shelter used to only be open in the winter. Now it’s open all year and yes they bus homeless in from other cities in Ontario.10 years ago, it wasn’t like this. On top of that we have so many new people that our little city doesn’t have the infrastructure for. It’s getting crowed here now.
This is everywhere unfortunately. Very sad. I travel to Nelson often from northeastern Washington and I love it there. It seems like there are very few homeless people compared to many other cities I know.
This is sad to see. My best friend and I were in Nelson 3 years ago and we just saw one homeless guy near the outdoor washroom on the main strip, there was even an rcmp officer chatting with him being kind. The thing that shocked us the most was when we decided to go for a walk at night. When we passed peoples houses we noticed fresh fruit, granola bars, water bottles and even cigarette packs at their steps near the sidewalks. At first we imagined there was a religious holiday which caused this. But as we went we realized the great people in the community of Nelson did this to look after the less fortunate. We never saw any other people walking around at night and Nelson became a retirement dream for us. I now worry what I will see when I come back to visit in July.
It is alot worse unfortunately and it also has become very unaffordable. May I make a retirement recommendation for you in two near by towns which are just as chill and nice. Go look at Kaslo and Creston

That guy sleeping behind the public toilet got it pretty good....if that was here in Edmonton his bicycle would have been stolen by another homeless person 5 mins after he fell asleep !
I can remember downtown Vancouver 40 years ago. It was bad then, It is worse now. We moved from Surrey to Shuswap lake. We are some 20 Kms from Salmon arm. They have a problem there. Vernon is only an hour away. they have a bigger problem.
@edrogers9530 totally agree with what your saying about Vernon.We relocated 2 yrs ago from Abbotsford to Vernon and was shocked at how bad the homelessness is.Vernon compares to Maple Ridge,thank goodness our realtor suggested we move high up on east hill so as the street vagrants don't travel up that far.
I was in Nelson about four years ago and thought it was a pretty awesome little place
I also lived in Nelson and raised 2 boys, we ended up moving do too jobs and yes Nelson has gone down hill. It's been 12 years since we moved. But we still visit Nelson.
Nelson was a sweet place - once upon a time. When I lived there for 10 years. It changed very quickly. I was there a couple of years ago, and could not believe my eyes. The Main Street Diner, which used to be such a hotspot, was empty. I still ordered a sandwich and sat in the window and saw a couple of dozen loungers hanging around. Scary.
The only time I will go there again will be to go to Georama, outside of Nelson, and stay the h away from any downtown activity.
My father and his business partner owned that restaurant it was called Milly's the old sign is still in the alleyway they sold it in the late 80s and the new owner called it main street dinner

Everyone is talking about affordable rents and low income rents when population suddenly goes up and we have no infrastructure. When housing costs rose rents in those landlords house rose. For example I researched end of 2017 Edmonton had 981,280 people - now it has over 1.5 million in 5 years almost six year. Trudeau increased immigration shortly after to 600000 temporary foreign works who can come Canada without work visas and are exempt from foreign buyers ban plus immigration allowed increased to over 400000 a year. There was no infrastructure for them. How many are putting strain on food banks, available rentals, homelessness and low income supports by provincial governments through no fault of their own. How many billions the Provincial and municipal leaders must stop Ottawa in my opinion.

My wife and I went to Nelson, stayed at The Hume (excellent), but this was 10 years ago….it makes me sad to see this. Nelson has long been a bit of a hippy town, but this, right now, is going to be the end for this beautiful little town, if things don’t change
Same thing happening in Trail ,, we moved from Surrey 4 years ago and I was shocked to see the same problems ! Lots of addicts and dangerous for my kids :(

Back then most homeless used to go to Vancouver for the winter and live on rainbow beach all summer, couchsurf or stay at a hippy communities around Nelson.. and I wouldn't even blame the cannabis and festival culture, as most homeless people nowadays seem to be in Nelson for other reasons.. it's a healing town, accepting and very alternative

I commonly get up on a Saturday morning , leave Calgary , and ride my Harley touring bike to Nelson. I stay at the Alpine Inn , go down to the Hume for a few drinks and some dinner . Sunday morning its off to Oso negro for a couple coffees then ride back home. Its a nice way to get away for the weekend. Ive been doing this for years , and have noticed the difference in the amount of street people. They seemed to be trying to clean it up a few years ago but it doesnt seem to be working. Its sad to see both in the fact that Nelson is a nice place , and that these poor people have nowhere to go.
This homeless situation has definitely exploded all across Canada. No place is the same, I feel your anguish and feel the same. The super wealthy corporations and private people need to share. Because on earth there is enough food to feed everyone except that some have filled up way too much. There is a man in Eastern Canada who is a millionaire who spent his own money and took 2 years to create 96 tiny homes for people who needed them. What is every millionaire did their part? Kindness is the only solution!

We have a massive number of immigrants competing for low pay jobs and housing. The result is homelessness and destitution across Canada.
During the Great Depression of the late 20's and 30's men would be rounded up and sent off to work camps in the forests and mines. My grandfather was one of those men. And when WW2 kicked off they were quick to volunteer in order to get away from the camps. I think we are coming back to those days, and another great war too. Thing is most of the homeless today are in that situation due to drug and alcohol abuse, or mental illness. Back in the day we had mental institutions to take care of the mentally ill. Those places are gone now except for the very few that remain. Also back in the day, life was cheap. You did drugs you died. Now they give you drugs so you can keep going in your addiction.

ABSOULTLY in Aneri a they get clean syringes and alcahol swabs. All the stuff you could possibly need to smoke crack The y get paramedics called out to resuscitate them. Tney get all sirts of very expensive hospital treatment when their drug use goes bad. I agree you use drugs you die stop wasti g money to save these retched lowlives! That's crazy. I remember traveling up there in the 1980s to play in a baseball tournament. Seemed like a good clean town. I live in Coeur d'alene, Idaho and we don't allow public camping anywhere in the cities around here but, if you travel across the state line to spokane, Washington that's a different story.
I was born and raised in Nelson it was a great town in the 80s and 90s now it has got so bad its sad the whole country is shit to be honest

You are right to reflect on the loss of industries in that area. I have seen Nelson through the years since 1963. I saw the hippy wave and now the drug addiction wave. Artsy People flock to Nelson and in winter the skiers. I am glad you were sensitive to not film people in their distressing situation. I have hope in the city’s encouragement to home owners to build small houses on their lot to increase the rental inventory.

They are not just down and out and homeless, they homeless drug addicts which is a bigger problem with very little chance they will ever become rehabilitated just an ongoing problem that will never end.

The Food Bank here in Salmon Arm is tightening the belt. The volunteer mentioned 749 clients one day waiting for sustenance. There are two Food Banks here. A recent publicly funded project is a new emergency shelter beside the sewage treatment plant and thrift store, but what is needed is a tiny home community. Give the folks some space between, a garden, a main resource building and help venue, plus a volunteer programme. It is said on the news that one quarter of the population is below the poverty line. With the climate crisis, things will just be getting worse, much worse.

I know at least two of the people you claim are homeless but they aren't. Yes, they are panhandling but they have roofs over their heads. The black guy is Maazu, super nice guy, clean and polite. He has living quarters. He has a mental illness. He doesn't bother anyone. Neither does Gabe who sits outside the Royal Bank.

There’s a proposed homeless shelter possibly coming to my town, if it does this problem will come there.

Here in Penticton apparently most street people are bussed in. Last time I went thru Nelson I didn't stop as there were parking meters everywhere.
Every shingle small town in Canada has the same problems .If the government reopens Riverview hospital in Coquitlam and helps these people under one roof .

I live in Niagara Falls...a supposed world class tourist destination...its a warzone here...the number of homeless, meth heads and crack heads, those with serious mental issues, violence, stabbings, shootings...yeah, something thats not on the tourism brochures...

So Trudeau really flooded Canada with his immigrants, student visas and "refugees" and spread them all over, making sure to miss no town anywhere. I grew up in Kitimat but haven't been back for 30 years. If this crap has hit Terrace, then I bet it's in Kitimat as well. Now Trudeau is federal, so he let them in, or brought them into the country. The provincial liberals and NDP spread them around. The purpose is to overload the system and society, in accordance with WEF 2030 guidelines. In a nutshell, Trudeau has sold out his country while getting rich in the process. He cares nothing for Canadians. And no, we're not ALL Canadians, like Trudy and his soy boys keep declaring. Only Canadian citizens are Canadians. Not students here on TEMPORARY visas. Not seasonal workers. And certainly not the criminals or psyche ward inmates that the middle and South American countries kicked out of their prisons and institutions, and who have migrated up here through the open border program in the US and here.
The only answer is to stop immigration. We can't take any more people. Next, arrest, collect and deport illegals back to their country of origin. Canada is not an importer of other countries' problems. We are NOT the world's welfare state.

i was there 5 years ago and found it strange for such a small town to have homeless people. Its so out of the way and not near any cities. doesnt even have a major airport
I haven’t seen to Nelson in a long time. It was my favourite place it was full of character and wonderful people. I never seen a homeless person when I was there.

I don't agree with you when you say there are no good paying jobs in the Nelson area. There are decent paying construction jobs, in season fire fighting jobs, and many more in other sectors. Yes they are not always the highest paying jobs, but If you have any kinds of skills, there is work out there which does pay well. Sadly there is a large group of people who have found ways to survive off of not working. I'm not bashing people who can't work because of physical or mental disabilities.

First time I was in Campbell River was mid 90’s. Heading up to Alice, and we stopped at the Quisam Hotell for a couple of Wobblies 🤓

Nelson It's such a beautiful town but it's not easy to get to, so you would kind of think that most of those people that are there in the streets are from the town itself!
Kelowna is the same and we even have a bunch newly built shelters.
And at what 50k a pop, you give out free stuff and the flow will never stop!

10 years ago, i was homeless here (( my bad; i own that )); i had to wait some 5 + months for finances to shape up: back then you had to be very! dysfunctional to go hungry-- Salvation Army provided food; && Jim Reimer , a christian minister .also gave you excellent meals for $$ 22 a month... the RENTs here are IN-SANE, if you re low income ;and, no i have no drug// booze issues-- i simply hung in there, until i fixed my $$, sleeping outside "til January; at which point i took off for St Johns for an amazing 8 wk trip. I came back found a place and have been happily housed for 10 years now..

When you're already a little effed up inside and you get cut off of punitive and callous social services in pursuit of cost savings, where do you go? what would you do? how long would you last? and from the suicides I've seen it's always the guy who wouldn't say sh!t if he had a mouthful of it who dies first...the people who never ask. They either get denied or have such low opinions of life or they succumb to the violence and indignity. They are easy to pick on, so politicians do. They are seen as the cause of, and solution to all of societies ills. If cutting social services and being tough on crime worked, you would think it would have worked by now. This is not an "eat the rich" response but fairs fair...maybe it's time to look at the tens and hundreds of billions of dollars transferred out of the country that are neither taxed nor circulating in the economy? Maybe we need to reconsider our middle-class eagerness to pay billionaires taxes for them? I don't pay zero percent or 2 percent or even 10 percent. do you? There's no reason for 7 year olds to go to school hungry, no need for single moms to trade sexual favours so their kid can have a backpack or go on a field trip and there's no need for the homelessness this man is illustrating. It's both cruel and not cost-effective. Police, ambulances, doctors, nurses, judges, workers...all are way more expensive than prevention.

OMG. The world has changed in 20 years and so has your former home town. In 1998 the bottom end of the housing market in Nelson was around 100k. Now it’s 500k. Addiction and mental health issues occur everywhere. “There’s one now.” Talking about a fire hydrant or a human being that’s someone’s kid or parent.

@@tbcy3zj Often drug users are dealers. These dealers would sell drugs to children without hesitation. The drug users leave a trail of garbage wherever they go. They leave IV needles everywhere. They destroy communities and make them dangerous. They steal and break into people's homes and cars. ... I am compassionate. But, treating druggies as victims is wrong. They have to be made responsible for their actions. And, if they cannot find anything in life that they enjoy, besides drugs, that is their own fault. I'm not callous. Allowing rampant drug use should never be permissible. And, yes, people who use drugs all day are losers. Being a loser is a choice. So stop!

Hey man I have to disagree with you here. I moved to Nelson 3 years ago and am in town daily. Yes there are homeless, homeless camps, and they seem to be whacked out most of the time. However, I have never felt unsafe, the police are very diligent and respectful to these unfortunate souls, and manage to keep things under control. We do have a problem that is getting worse do to lack of leadership in town council. But overall it is a wonderful town with very warmhearted good people. I think it’s pretty cheap of you to come back and bash it like you are. Not fair to the people of Nelson in my opinion.
I respect that opinion but I am not being " cheap " in saying that the crime rate has increased and even a stabbing on baker street in the past years. Not to mention the open drug use is out of control it is not as safe as it was when I used to live there that is a FACT!. So someone who just put in three years there to come and tell me its all great is not very accurate. I was living there since 1983 till recent you have no idea with all due respect!
Gov needs to start helping its own people rather then giving money and houses to refugees that aren't from here .
These are drug addicts...not wanting to get clean. They get everything given to them but refuse all " help" I'd rather have immigrants that are productive humans any day.
It's all over BC! Keep voting NDP and Fed Liberal. You'll be homeless too.
