How I Failed Off Grid

  • I never thought I would say this... but this is the end of my off grid plan for now. Check out Jackery's huge sale now on the Official Store (US Store: bit.ly/allybro... code: JKPDAM5 + CA Store: bit.ly/allybro... ) and on Amazon bit.ly/3VqDKCs code: MQ3NXASK and Home Depot: bit.ly/3VUVoNJ
In this video, I talk about my off grid goals and how I failed. I wanted to grow all of my own food, be self reliant and have a lush garden, but my systems broke over time and the elements (drought, excess shade) didn't help. Things are a bit messy and overgrown and mice are all over inside. The plan was to be off grid much more often and care for it, but that changed when we bought our old a-frame cabin to renovate into a home. You'll see some updates on the current cabin property too.

Ally...Fail is such a strong word with negative connotations and as a channel fan these past few years I have not seen a 'fail' anywhere, just a learning process that as you moved forward it got better or didn't. As long as you are learning there is no fail. The pair of you have worked your arses off accomplishing so much, there are bound to be moments that just don't work out. I think putting the focus on your home where you are living day to day is brilliant and with all of the love and care you have put into the off grid it will survive the more minimum time you spend caring for it. Easy peasy! LOL

Ally, you have far from failed. You and Kyle have set your priorities straight and that has to be the home you’re living in. There is much to do and you’ve both made tremendous progress and you also devote a lot of time to your Etsy shop, which is very successful. So fail, NO not at all, you are extremely successful and should be very proud of all you’ve accomplished. We have loved watching your growth from the very beginnings that you first appeared in Kyle’s videos so many years ago and will continue to support your every endeavor.
    Love, John and Sandy

Thank you for being so open and honest with how much there truly is to keep up with when having a home base in the mountains. I'm always amazed at how much you two keep up with the immense amount of work for both properties, and I'm glad to hear you're gonna pump the breaks a bit and not burn yourselves out too much! You've worked so very hard, you deserve to slow down a bit and breathe in the fruits of your labors 🤍
Also, loved Kyle's guest appearance at the end there. He's such a goof, really had me laughin 😂

I wouldn't worry about 'failures' at the Off Grid cabin now that you have the A frame house and property. I would simply look at the Off Grid as a change of pace retreat. It's pretty there so simply enjoy what you have in place.

I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for the very encouraging reflections in this video. You've inspired me in my own renovations and Herbal journey over the past year or so and I resonate so thoroughly with feeling that failure. As the weeds press on and the bugs eat the plants and the painting takes longer than you think. It's just all so overwhelming. But you're right, it's not about just getting done but about enjoying it as you go. Thank you again! And keep up the amazing content you both are inspirations!

I’m glad you guys are settling in to this new philosophy. You are a couple of amazing individuals and a fabulous couple. Your strong work ethic, desire to learn and general goal setting blows me away. But I have wondered how you keep up with it all PLUS show us everything as well. I don’t see any failure here. I see a transition - the cabin is a thing of beauty and the product of such dedication. The garden was lovely and it was there for a season or so. Perhaps seasonal is a good word in terms of the lovely cabin. All is evolving as it should. Sometimes we are hard on ourselves. But all the things you do are things of beauty. Whether they last or pass. ❤

Your salad recipe sounds amazing. I understand how you feel about your cabin. My husband and I stepped away from ours when the children were young. Our trick was to let the landscape do it's thing, no mowing or planting, just creating paths and areas with stones. It was amazing with all the ferns and mushrooms that made our place magical. So don't stress, you will find time to fix it up during your life as well. Enjoy

Good to reflect on things that work and don't work. Through these "failures" (I don't look at anything you or Kyle have done so far as failure), there is much to be learned as well as success. So many people focus only on success. What they don't realize is through missteps so much is gained.

I don’t live in the woods. My area is very heavily treed though with ancient shrubs or so the county calls them, meaning shrubs you can’t go find in a store and the county does not want us to cut them back or down, but they bring problems sometimes. Nature and animals let us know that they are the ones in charge.😆It is an ongoing battle just in my area so I can’t imagine living in the woods it would have to be nonstop everything and trying to keep up with it all. 😊

Hello. I am a silent follower but have watched you for a little over a year. A video of yours popped up on my recommended one day and I'm glad I watched! I don't think "fail" is the appropriate word. Because when you look at it all, you DID do what you set out. You did grow a beautiful garden that provided for you, you did maintain and beautiful landscape at that off grid cabin. You did do what you said you wanted to do, in some semblance of the idea. So you didn't fail. You were successful. They just happened a little bit differently than you intended.

I definitely wouldn't say you've failed, I would more so say that maybe you had very ambitious goals and haven't been able to meet all of those goals in the way you thought you would! This lifestyle is a constant learning experience so I really don't believe there is any failing because everything you learn is helping you grow and that's what life is all about anyway :) I'm sure it can feel like failure when you're comparing it to your expectations but sometimes we have to let go of our expectations and be okay with what is! And you're also allowed to change your mind and your goals and maybe you've realized that having the goal of a fully off-grid set up is not possible at the moment with your circumstances and that's okay! Inspiring so many people to pursue a more off-grid lifestyle which is ultimately helping humanity help the planet and reconnect with nature and ourselves is a HUGE success in my book.

Ally this is one of my favourite videos of yours ever! ❤ So beautifully told and captured, and down to earth commentary with you and Kyle makes it feel extra special. You’ve both achieved so much in a short time. Failure is a word I’ve struggled with my whole life and doesn’t reflect the hard work that goes into everything we put our heart and soul (and muscles) into. I’m learning (much older than you) it doesn’t serve me and to let that word go… it detracts from the big (holistic) picture of life x

Gardening in the mountains is very difficult. You have many more challenges than in most places...such as wildlife, things not level, too much shade, and even more. It can be done, but you are not living there full time to handle it so enjoy that property as your mountain home and where you are now you have a little better space for a garden and more sun and more time to spend on that garden.

Not failing just adjusting. Every single soul on the planet is in a constant state of adjustment. At 51 I've adjusted to owning little as possible and see as much of God's planet as possible. No longer building an off grid lifestyle and planning on living in a van aka adjusting my life to the time I have left. Not failing.

Fail? No. I wish you did'nt feel like that. You work hard at both places and hard work is never a fail.

Oh wow, I need a Jackery at my cabin. I CONSTANTLY lose power from the severe thunderstorms. I need power for my C-PAP machine.
Sidenote: Is your American flag hanging correctly? Is the video processing flipping the image of it? I know, I sound like a "Karen" but it's important to hang the flag properly: the stars should be on the *left* and it looks like you're hanging it on the right.

Maintaining two properties would be a lot of work, I don't think you've failed at all. You've done so much at your primary house.

You have failed nothing !! Earth and weather are hard on us as well as our caretakers. We must roll with the punches. After a successful harvest we can come into our Spring garden with a sad look and over growth. This is usually a sad slow part of gardening. These times can bring us down. Be of good heart ohh gentle soldier. It's Hard and Great its Tough and Amazing. We are all a part of this Beautiful Creation and place of Life. So is the rest of the The Great Beyond.
