In almost every way, the Snell Illusion's measured performance is textbook in nature-which is perhaps to be expected, given that its designer, Joe D'Appolito, literally wrote the book on how loudspeakers should be measured (Testing Loudspeakers, Audio Amateur Press, 1998).
I have 4 focal 5k013 in 2 custom enclosures that my uncle built at motorola just before they laid off i think 200,000 people back in the 90's. they are the same mid range ones in this video. What do i actually have on my hands? good for mixing music with at least?
Definitely state of the art stuff. Probably one of the best speakers in the world. Stereophile and other places consider it "one of the best loudspeakers they've ever heard". That's quite a statement right there ... It looks so futuristic or "alien". No curves or anything. $50,000 MSRP though?? JESUS LORD.
Hi thank you so much for the extremely interesting video with such a highly praised designer. I am not an expert but when i see Mr. D'Appolito's concept in many speakers i am sincerely fascinated. When I see how much this design has become so popular in high end i have the strong feeling that it must be really right ! Great achievement in speakers technology. I have one question. Mr. D'Appolito stresses the importance of a great midrange performance. Can we define in terms of actual freq bandwidth this midrange ? i mean from which Hz to which Hz does it extend ? Another question. A crossover with a freq inside the midrange can impact negatively the overall sound ? (i tend to think so). Thanks a lot again for the extremely valuable video. Kindest regards, gino
That's the thing though. D'Appolito designs fly in the face of all conventional science. In my mind, D'Appolito designs sacrifice comb-filtering in favor of symmetrical lobing. Apparently this sounds correct to many, or the interference pattern creates a magic woo scenario where the destructive interference is reduced and constructive interference is increased. Frankly, I doubt it. I wanted to like this design, but that's before I started understanding driver placement and frequency response. I'm fine with this design so long as the basic rules of avoiding comb-filtering are implemented. It's nearly impossible to do unless the tweeter is offset and it's also a 3-way. Which again, I'm willing to do. But then, the D'Appolito devotees will then complain that the lobing is now not symmetrical with the offset tweeter. For the home and achieving hifi at a reasonable price, which incorporates psycho acoustics which people generally like, I think the tweeter, mid, woofer, woofer in a 3-way configuration is best. Of course, one can always scrap the other woofer. It eliminates comb-filtering. And the psycho acoustics reflect nature. Tweets (air) on top. Mids (higher voice) in the middle. And lower voice and bass on bottom (elephants and tanks moving on the ground). I used to think this design was awful, but then I started understanding beaming and comb filtering. It's common because it works at voiding the pit falls.
Interesting he says you can't find really good high end drivers in the US but have to go to Europe for them. Yet there are some astonishingly good US made speakers. Are none of their drivers sourced in the US? Me thinks he exaggerates.
Its Ironic that the sound quality of this video is nearly unlistenable.
The midrange is the key, I found that out many years ago but you also need an amplifier that can produce good midrange.
its always ironic when videos about hifi equipment have terrible audio. really great video though, thanks so much for uploading it.
Legendary loudspeakers, wow! This is the stuff dreams are made of. Apparently there are only 10 pairs in existence. State of the art!
Great man! I do appreciate his brilliant understanding of midrange resolution and midrange punch.
great man an inventor, thx for this

They say it has one of the finest midranges ever.
I’d love to hear them. Anyone have a link? Nothing here on UA-cam.
I have some JSE Infinite Slope Model 2 speakers....are they any good?

*Anonymous DuetoFascists* You have no idea what you're talking about. Please just stop.
I dont believe he was the first person to ever put a tweeter in the middle of two woofers !!!

Wtf audio quality. Err
