I have written an ebook PDF course on the modes called: "The Lead Guitarist's Practical Guide to Modes" which you can download from my website for just $10USD! Watch the promo video here and follow the links: ua-cam.com/video/R9zeKtG6h_4/v-deo.html
I think « ugh, whatever » is great for locrian because it means « unresolved » and it’s exactly that theory wise (diminished triad from the root which is the leading note). I teach too, and would like a way to identify modes quickly by ear as easily as intervals. Your video is great but I can clearly hear an E in the drone sound and that would clash with the A locrian’s Eb. For Phrygian I always think of flamenco music, it’s not a feeling but it works for me.
I can't actually watch the video right now as UA-cam keeps serving me an unskippable 4 minute ad... -_- honestly, what the hell is this platform thinking? Everything they do is wrong. Anyway! Thanks for watching. I do vaguely remember making a drone a decade or so ago and accidentally leaving a 5th in, so I imagine I used it in this video. I will think of Locrian as "unresolved", lol, it is far more professional that "ugh, whatever".
it'll also help if you study the fretboard in ONE KEY ( KEYS are just PITCH) if you played the 7 different modes with in the major scale over the sametone center...It's the samething as changing KEYS.. Anyways in standard tuning the Guitar is designed to be play in E... The LOW E....and two top strings...B and E ( perfect 4th and perfect are PURE TONEs) if you barr across the 5th fret...ALL the notes are in A minor pentatonic. 12 fret or open are in E minor pentatonic. 10th fret are in D minor pentatonic. Lets say you want to DRONE in the KEY of the D MAJOR. Just pretend the 2nd fret is the NUT ( in C Major) You can still hit any of notes OPEN. it'll be as if it's in E Dorian. Simply play the D sus 9 chord....with your RING FINGER hook on the D note ( B string) This will allow your other three fingers to be free to play different notes. Simply play different BASS notes with your other fingers in D MAJOR. As I said...you can also lift your index finger and let the G string ring OPEN and Harmonize while in D Major......Then Play F note ( b3) to modulate. Then the Bb (b6). Listen to the different it'll still harmonize and give the song a different sound....melencoly..dreamy sort of sound...CELTIC music sort of sound. For CADENCE......From MAJOR to Minor Then play whatever..or strike the B MINOR chord.. Then play the A# into B = Harmonic minor. This will give a SPANISH GUITAR sort of feel...More Dramatic. Stronger feel....Or BACH depending what mode/chord you move to from there. In other words...VAMP the F# minor with F# Maj or DOMINANT.. Most people are going to play Phrygian Dominant over this. it's just a Phrygian with Maj 3... Then A# and G#....( E minor with E major or Dominant) This is the MELODIC minor..however you're going from Minor to MAJOR INTERVALS...The most common mode people play over this is the LYDIAN DOMINANT...its just a Lydian with b7. The A #, G# and F ( #4) = ( IV mode of Harmonic MAJ or Lydian b3) C# diminished with C# DOMINANT The SECOND half of the SCALE is slowly shifting to MAJOR intervals. If you read music...it'll make more sense why certain ACCIDENTAL notes have b or natural symbols. Example...the b6 from the D major count is the same note as maj7 from the B minor count....LEADING TONE....Bb into A...verse A# into B.
I actually guessed those 3 right. When u listen to Steve Vai u just know its Lydian. Phrygian was tough, initially thinking mixolydian but then it got rly a dark sound. And the third onewas just magical, rly nice mate. The modes are a bit too advanced for me but it's still nice to get some knowledge and maybe develop it later on . I'm sticking to aeolian right now and trying out those chord progressions out of the chord chard from last videos. Thx again, helping tons.
Congrats on the right answers dude! Sounds like you have a better understanding than you give yourself credit for. When you do wanna give it a go, check out my ebook on the modes? I deliberately created it simple enough for anyone to understand - so it'd be no trouble for someone like you! Keep up the good practice
I sure will in the future, right know I'm developing my techniques focusing a lot in my practice time. I checked out your homepage, definitely some nice affordable stuff in there. Sequences drew my attention, and I will check it out when I'm at that department while learning. I can learn a lot from you, since we share similar styles, keep it up mate. Cheers!
Yeah chords and modes can be constructed for any scale, but it often gets really messy with unusual/exotic scales. I figured it all out for the Byzantine scale and it was a real mess. Not pretty, like the Major scale.
Locrian, I find, is a good transitional mode to flick into briefly but you need the right exit note to resolve to a more chord/key-centric mode. in other words, a less bizarre, more identifiable note. Hey, cheers for the lesson. I'm going to buy your picking exercises
Glen, I value your opinion on this, I have never found any use for Locrian as a mode/sound but I will certainly try out your suggestion. Thanks if you do buy it =D and I would like to hear what you think
The only songs I know that are in locrian are "Army of Me" by Bjork and "Dust To Dust" by John Kirkpatrick! Other than that, it is almost impossible to write anything using this mode.
Alfred Potter Guitar I will be buying it for sure, after Paypal rectifies a problem with my account. I definitely need to find a way to increase my picking speed without tensing my hand, wrist and arm
"The Simpsons" theme song sounds like it might be Locrian. Is it? Edit: Googled it. Nope. Apparently it is the 'Acoustic scale' also known as the Lydian dominant scale... the fourth mode of the Melodic Minor ascending scale... in case anybody else was wondering.
Cool concept, I've thought about this in the past but never really wrote down what feeling each mode is. Perhaps I can do this with Harmonic Minor too?
Yeah totally can. Though personally I have only really 'musically connected' with the first (Harmonic Minor), the fourth (Romanian), and the fifth (Phrygian Dominant). The rest seem a bit weird and unstable.
come on man...how can you not like the locrian mode? Then you go like this. Modulate while over the ionian or same tone center. Then modulate back to Ionian b3 = melodic minor b6 = Harmonic MAJOR Then b3 and b6 = Harmonic minor. It'll help alot becuase you're shifting the pitch of the notes DOWN. Plus you wont be afraid to play b3 or b6 while in MAJOR If you where in the Natural MINOR....shift the notes UP.... b7 into Maj7 b6 into Major perfect 4th into augmented #4 It's going to pull you a certain way. If you learn how to blend these 4 scale together or see them layers over each other... You'll write music easy and figure out other people's songs easy... The other three scales dont have KEYS signatures...but you're suppose to play them in conjuction with the MAJOR/ Natural minor..scale There's other scales such as the WHOLE TONE...I hear it in the twigiightzone theme. Twighlight...feel, I suppose. the FULL diminished is 1,b3.b5.bb7....which you can stack maj or diminished triads ( HW or WH) These scales are EGMATIC scales... Double harmonic minor (harmonic minor #4) Naopolitian MAJ or Minor.....Melodic minor b2....Harmonic minor b2.. Modes in these too. As i said it'll help you get out of only playing in the confine of the MAJOR scale. Plus you wont sound or look like an idiot telling other people they are wrong for playing notes outside of the major scale.lol Some of the alter modes are... Dorain b4....Phrygian b4.....Aeolian b4...Locrain b4....Lydain #2...Mixolian #2...ect It's actaully cool to just make a list of emotions...After all us musicains/art likes to express ourselves via emotions... Haunting Scarry fearful Frightening excellerating...ect Then it's just ionian b3 dorian b2 Phrygian b1 Lydian b7 Mix b6 Aeolian b5 Locrain b4 Ionian b6 Dorian b5 Phrgian b4 Lydain b3 Mix b2 28 basic modes...instead of only 7
While the diagrams seem to be a 3 note/string pattern, the Roots should be noted as that's the best way to get the sound of the mode, root to root! leave out the extra notes for now
Lewis Birkett Late reply, but so did I. I also switched them around. I'm good at identifying all the others I guess, but I'll need to work some more on those two

I know the Hungarian Gypsy and Byzantine scale positions. Do scales like these have their own corresponding modes as well?
Yeah chords and modes can be constructed for any scale, but it often gets really messy with unusual/exotic scales. I figured it all out for the Byzantine scale and it was a real mess. Not pretty, like the Major scale.

Damn bro you give lessons?
My guess was Mixolydian, Phrygian, Dorian. I guess I need to work on my ear :)
I guessed all three modes right but not in the right order!
Thank you guitar man
My pleasure to provide
@@AlfredPotterGuitar I literally have an exam about this in 10 minutes lol wish me luck
Good luck, indeed! If you ever wanna hang out and talk technique and theory etc, join my Discord =) I am on there everyday: discord.gg/G9r65Uu6vY
thanks sir ☺
A good example of what can be played using Locrian is the Sand Castles and Glass Camels section of the Grateful Dead song “Blues for Allah “
2/3 on last quiz waaah dis helps me alot
thank you
That's a good score, well done!
its realy hard to distinguish ionian to myxolidian because myxo is just the ionian but the root note is on A string
Mixolydian has a flattened 7. That's the only difference. But yes this makes them similar.
@@AlfredPotterGuitar woaaah sneakyyyy Flattened 7 XD thank you soo much looking forward for more videos
While the diagrams seem to be a 3 note/string pattern, the Roots should be noted as that's the best way to get the sound of the mode, root to root! leave out the extra notes for now

No way bro =p
