I have so many fond memories of Fire Emblem: Three Houses, hard to believe the game released over 4 years ago.
strangely i miss that game.. but never finished due to the damn school stuff. not sur ei can go back though

All games on the list have such phenomenal music. And I think Three Houses is like the easy win overall in gameplay, story, characters, and music. But Triangle Strategy probably is my preferred art style; I think HD2D graphics are the very best look for SRPGs and classic style JRPGs going forward.
Another SRPG which it is given the looks of the battle system that I feel is heavily overlooked here is the Live A Live remake.

Extremely comprehensive and you can tell the enthusiasm and excitement of these games and how you really played through them. Love that.
I was hoping that Brigandine was going to make the list.

Honorable mention: 13 sentinels: aegis rim. This is more visual novel than trpg so i disqualified it from the top 10. Its story is one of the GOATs in gaming. Another masterpiece from vanillaware.
I tend to forget games I've played. Not with valkyria chronicles series!! The awesome story of a baker and the village teacher picking up guns to protect their country was told really well. And damn touching at times.
I agree . First played it on the GameCube and got hooked
triangle was a masterpiece i hope they do more mature rpgs like this.
Three Houses easily deserves to be number 1 for me. It's literally one of my top 5 favorite games of all time.
I disagree with Sparks of Hope being below Kingdom Battle. I enjoy the story more and the appearance of Mario Galaxy characters.
Fire Emblem Engage may not be anywhere near as awesome as 3H, but it's easily top 5 all things considered. As is Triangle Strategy. But what I feel is overlooked is that the Live A Live remake deserves to be considered SRPG. And that one is my 2nd favorite. And heck yeah for Tactics Ogre being on the list.
I mean gameplaywise Engage is better then Three Houses.
@@worldchallenger7564 Debatable. It's commonly said the combat is the best in the series yet, but combat =/= gameplay. It's also argued the minigames have been getting better which I also agree, but going over other specific details.
I do agree that out of all FE titles, Engage produced the best way to handle the weapon triangle system; the disarming them momentarily makes more sense than slight stat buffs and a fun tactical strategy. Brawling disarming pretty much anything not the main three or other brawlers (Who can't be disarmed) is also neat. But it still falls shorter in other areas.
Three Houses still has the better class and level up system IMO. There are so many classes to reclass into, and going up to level 99 is neat; the potentially infinite level ups via consistent resetting with no decrease in stats seems overkill. Three Houses having really high class caps is also a + for me despite finite level ups with each getting harder than last. And I prefer weapon ranks being something one can grind, not something dependent on the Emblem gimmick and reclass combination. And using weapon/talent ranks to reach classes as opposed to Emblems. And I also still think the Battalion Gimmick was done better than Emblem gimmick overall. The latter just seems more fan service(y) than it does SRPG. And both games inspired great boss design going forward with the multiple health bars thing. And would love seeing both bosses and various non bosses have them going forward.
By the way people, if it was not clear from the video, OJ beat all of these games on HARD difficulty! He mentioned it like 1000 times, but just to be clear, it was on HARD! Haha

Both Triangle Strategy and Engage are in my backlog. I hope to dive into one of them this year.
Love the list!! Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Triangle Strategy, and Fire Emblem Engage are some of my favorite games on the system and definitely deserve their spots here. I would also probably throw in one of the Disgaea games but I still love the ones you chose :)
I wholeheartedly agree with your top three, personally (though my order of them shifts moment to moment). I play P5T on Game Pass, but I really enjoy that, too. Tactics Ogre and eventually Unicorn Overlord are on my to-play. I appreciate the work you put into this list!
Tactics Ogre is a highly underestimated game; I feel like people don't give it a try only because it's a remaster, but it might be one of the greatest SRPGs of all time, honestly.
Always felt mario + rabbids kingdom battle was better than the sequel but your explanation was able to put that into words perfectly. Great video
Great list! Shoutout to lactics Ogre: Reborn, the precursor to the genre and to some of our favourite titles.
Shame Advance Wars couldn’t crack the top 10. It was a brilliant game on the GBA but from what I’ve seen the remake wasn’t that great.

I love both Mario + Rabbids games. But I agree that I like Kingdom Battle more than Sparks of Hope.
I loved Triangle Strategy, just beat it, loved how it reminded me of OG FF Tactics BUT the ending felt very anticlimactic. I give #1 to 3 Houses too
hooo nice list, but for me especially the top 3 is:
1. triangle strategy
2. FE engage
3. FE 3 houses
I don't know man, even though FE 3 houses is very good but I personally think engage is better than 3 houses after tried both of it.
But the most satisfied moment for me is when I played triangle strategy on switch, since the game is really feel similiar with FF Tactics. Maybe I'll change the top 1 of my favorite strategy games on switch to FF Tactics when it finally got the remaster version.

Fire emblem three houses and Engage are all time games for me. Totally agree with this list across the board.
When unicorn overlord comes out it will be worthy to be on your list.
So I'm asking based on this video, are SRPGs and TRPGs essentially the same thing?
I have recently played Persona 5 Tactica and I find it disappointing. Even if the music and art is great (and it is), the simplistic combat is average at best for my taste. You only control 3 characters simultaneously and most missions are very short and too easy. Triangle Strategy is my number 1, followed by Fire Emblem Engage
I played FE 3houses as my first real dip into these kinds of games. I chose the blue house because it was my favorite color choice. At first, the school system was ok, and the tea party/meals and such aspects were just kind of lame to me. By my 20th hour I found myself needing to eat meals with or fish for certain people. I loved or disliked some of the characters, and found out that you could recrute from other houses, but im a ride-or-die kind of player so I stuck with my blues.
At first I hated Dedue. I thought he was boring and lame. "big strong boi loves his prince" and I made him a tank so he was SLOWWWW on the battlefield. To be honest I didn't like using him at that point, but the back story of this man. His back story made his personality make sense. Then I started investing some more time in developing his gear and using him on the battlefield. Soon I found that my whole stratigy...no my whole game was DEDUE. He had the heart, the charisma, the style, the strength, and my full undevided loyalty. I was having so much fun for the next 15hrs of gameplay. Just me and my boi Dedue killing it in the trenches man. We climbed the mountain top of this game and defieted every foe that was lain before us.
I thought the final battle in the first half was the final battle. I made sure that all other combatants were nowhere near my main man when he dealt the final blow to the big bad boss. BIG OLE swing with his axe and vicotry was ours! WUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU! Oh it was amazing. BUT AND I MEAN BUT that second half cut scene started up. I was so fuggn JACKED UP to run this thing down with Dedue and take on the world man. I see my princely boi all messy and homeless-looking with a new class (which I did not appreciate). I knew that his bodyguard must be coming up in the lineup soon. 1 then 2, then more people join and it finally dawns on me when my prince man says it..... Dedue is dead. DEDUE IS DEAD. WTF WHO DID THIS WHAT NOOOOO, THERE IS NO WAY THEY WOULD JUST KILL MY MAN OFF SCREEN LIKE THAT. I literally dropped the controller and sat in silence for minutes. I shut off the game and took a walk then decided that I didn't want to continue a story without my main man.
5 months later I pick it back up because Dedue was on my mind that day and I was craving some vengeance. I played that whole second half like I was the dude from Taken and they done killed my kid. Every enemy I killed was like a small omen to my main man. I slaughtered my way though that second half and didn't give a single fudge about anyone or thing happening around me. All I wanted was to kill that princess that took my Dedue away.
Then it happened. HE CAME BACK! I full on let out a full volume "HELL YEAHHHH" when it turned out that Dedue wasn't dead. To this day I will cherish completing that game with my axe weilding tank by my side.
And if Sega makes valkyria chronicles 5 - Definitely day one pre order from me❤
I think this list will change really soon. another fire emlem game Unicorn overlord and potentially fantasy tactics will have to battle themselves in
Your list is pretty similar to mine, except p5t is lower than mario kingdom battle (i like the more challenging one better) and valkyria chronicles is much higher (and xcom2 is NOT on my list... buggy hell of a game in switch 😅).
Great list anyway and i agree in many of your comments on the games too
tactics ogre for me but cant commit to it at the moment. its a lot to take on. so cheap now

I don’t know how you can praise Triangle Strategy as a strategic game being shallow as it is mechanically. For me it’s a visual novel with bland tactical mechanics. In that sense 13 Sentinels is way way better in both story and mechanic wise.
