  • Clip from Robert Dancik's DVD, "Faux Bone Jewelry: Tools and Techniques"
    DVD description:
Expand your jewelry and mixed media art with the limitless possibilities of Faux Bone. This non-toxic and seemingly indestructible material has the look of bone but is completely animal-free. In this workshop, innovative jewelry artist Robert Dancik provides a great introduction to Faux Bone and jewelry making basics.
Robert introduces jewelry tools and the basics of shaping Faux Bone with lessons on sawing, sanding, drilling, and polishing. You'll learn to make rivets and add microfasteners and how to combine Faux Bone with resin and metal clay. Robert uses materials easily found in your local hardware store or your craft closet.
You'll combine your new skills to create a finished Faux Bone pendant. You'll carve an original design and add character by polishing and antiquing.
You don't need much to get started, and the potential for this new substance is endless. Explore its texture and design possibilities in Faux Bone Jewelry: Tools and Techniques with Robert Dancik.

Interesting, I have just been using those large basted dog bones (from a cows leg), they're cheep and yield lots of material. I realize it's not animal free, but regardless of what's done with it, it would be wasted otherwise and I don't dig that either.
Thank you for an alternative, I am definitely not against the idea of using a different material.
    Cheers!

?Can you do image transferring on faux bone?

    • @kellyannepowersstudio

+Lorri Carnevale Robert didn't demonstrate any transfer techniques in his workshop but it looks like you might be able to with TAP. Leslie Riley has an ebook with faux bone transfers as part of it. This is a long link and if it doesn't work, if you google "image transfer on faux bone" it should come up as an option. : books.google.com/books?id=4brjAwAAQBAJ&pg=PA48&lpg=PA48&dq=image+transfer+on+faux+bone&source=bl&ots=oya-_WkkOo&sig=YBSb_7zd3R-DC91U9oydAn-ZZw4&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiO_aG03dXMAhVPxGMKHXz3ADMQ6AEIIzAC#v=onepage&q=image%20transfer%20on%20faux%20bone&f=false

+Kelly Powers thank you so much I thought you could as I do transferring on metal and create the entire transfer so I'll try it and let you know. Also can you get this product at like a home depot or is it made especially for doing this type of work? in other words do I have to get it from Robert?

+Lorri Carnevale Oh yeah! Do let me know! :) I haven't seen faux bone at hardware stores yet so I think right now it's still a direct buy from Robert. www.fauxbone.com/collections/all

Uhh....why fake bone when the same techniques on real bone will give you a real artifact ....just because it is not animal? Fake is fake.

And some people _like_ the chat and his style of presenting. This excerpt from an online course is aimed at all levels, so has to be designed with that in mind.
Sadly SA - and this may come as a surprise so brace yourself - the internet isn't designed to revolve just around you and your preferences...
