The most notable characteristics of all the best RAF fighter pilots was their deflection shooting. In Malta, Beurling was asked why his camera guns showed he was shooting at nothing. His reply was he shot with so much deflection, his cameras were filming where the aircraft was before his bullets hit it. Tuck Johnnie Johnson and Beurling were all credited with shooting aircraft down with barely and bullets or shells. All of them reported shooting down aircraft with 2 or 3 shells in the wing root, exactly where the damage was found on the corresponding crashed enemy aircraft.

Thank you for this! It's so wonderful to see people still interested in my grandfather's career. I am very proud.

Just finishing another movie about him - for the Museum of Jewish Soldier in WW2. The museum will open in spring 2022, so please come and visit Israel! : you will be glad to see that he is commemorated with proper respect, and he is considered one of the most courageous and admired warriors of our nation in WW2.

He and a few others saved this country from being invaded. He will never be forgotten.

I learned about your Grandfather and read his biography when I was at St Dunstain's college in the 1960's. It's fair to say that he was (and still is) a hero to me and an inspiration. Glad to see him remembered in this way.

He shot back at the guns that brought him down, and a 20mm round went down the barrel and blew it to smithereens. And his captors showed him the wrecked gun and, slapping him on the back, exclaimed "Goot shot, goot shot Englander!" How cool is that!

I maybe an Aussie, but was a fan of Bob Stanford Tuck. He was up there with Johnny Johnson during that period, and would nodoubt be the leading scorer if not shot down over Germany.
I have a signed print of “The return of the few” by Robert Taylor, that takes pride of place in our house, and I note that Bob was an extremely accomplished mushroom grower in later life.

YT has a video of Tuck and family at their mushroom farm, with him teaching his sons to shoot.

I had the honor of speaking with R.S. Tuck and Gen. Galland for about 30 minutes in the early or mid 80’s. They were on our base one night and speaking with a small group of aircraft maintenance personnel and myself. I was a USAF Security Policeman.

100%. So should Bader, Johnson, Malan, Pattle, Beurling and many others.

My Dad was ground crew (Instruments) in the RAF. He recalled fitting a new deflector gun site to RST’s aircraft (? spitfire or hurricane). Apparently he didn’t like it at all and asked Dad to remove it and refit to original gun site.

Very well done. An interesting anecdote of his visit to the US was in assisting dogfight training some American pilots he got lost and ran out of fuel doing (I think) a dead stick landing in a cemetery to the surprise of local gravediggers! Why was Fly for your life not made into a movie?

The number of parachute jumps he made should have qualified him for airborne paratrooper wings as well. British aces struggled to get the number of kills that other nations scored but then you realise that those kills were mostly Luftwaffe planes flown by the most experienced combat pilots of that time.
